A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

The UK government is warning people to prep with tinned food and water in case of national emergencies.

Null once said in one of his streams that if public services stop running, then it's time to evacuate whatever country you're in. Not sure if it applies yet, but it's quite concerning that the gov's warning people to stock up.
I find civil defence stuff super neat and this is so disappointing, its not nearly as cool as Protect and Survive and the Swedes while having a better modern version of their civil defence pamphlet also actually printed them so you can still access them in a real emergency.

I'm not sure it's scaremongering or just reminding people that shit happens and it's a good idea to have foot, water, and medicine on hand to last a few days just in case. Maybe a terror attack or natural disaster or weather event like a blizzard or riots in the streets or something.

Rishi's been banging the drum that Britain is facing "some of the most dangerous years in its history". Scaremongering that changing governments would be dangerous right now seems to be one of his only tactics (especially given how terrible his campaign has been so far) so I wouldn't be shocked if he'd pushed to set up prepare.campaign.gov.uk just to further than narrative.
The Telegraph's been banging the drum that we're on the verge of a new world war, and that Putin's about to invade NATO any day now... I don't know how co-ordinated this is, or whether the Tories are just in fear-mongering mode at the moment.

In more important news, I saw this big plant with red berries near my sister location. Quite prickly but not sure what type. Kinda monkey-puzzle shaped and gorse-ish. Possibly cotoneaster horizontalis or berberis.
Whenever I'm out walking and see a plant I don't recognize, I take a photo on my phone and run it through Google Image Search. It's pretty good nowadays!

"People should buy 3 days worth of food"
>People panic buy and stock up, clearing the shelves and supply channels of excess food
>Highstreet market makes bank, inflation seems to be lower because of bank made
>Tories profit.

Remember when they said there was a shortage of fuel back in 2022 and everyone fell for it? There was no fuel shortage, it was the petrol hitting the 18 months shelf life that was sat about because people worked from home and weren't buying fuel. The normies fell for it, the excess fuel was taken out of the supply chain before it has to be wasted.

It's all a ploy, all a scam, all a lie. You should always be stocked up with months worth of food and a way of creating fresh water, not just having a few bottles knocking about.

Sunak just has nothing to run on. I will give him some credit though, at least he's not trying to put Keir Starmer in prison, like his senile opposite number in the United States

Wanting some input from across the country; are you seeing bees at the moment? I’ve been out in the garden and there’s no bees. Where are all the bees? Things are starting to bloom as well, they’re usually out and about by now but it’s really noticeable how few there are. How is it where you are?
(I am seeing wasps everywhere like I haven’t seen in years though. Taken two nests down this week at the golfball size stage and have another one high up on the side of the house to get to at some point…) I’ve never had wasps build nests here before ever. And there are usually bees all over.
I have seen some bees but only a handful. Not a super built up area - I would expect bees. There are some though. It has been pretty cool here though - still waiting for the actual warm weather.

Who here #zeroseats? I am.
The Tories are never going to get the true crushing defeat they deserve and the country needs, they'll come out of the GE battered and bruised but they'll inevitably come back into power after Labour has had their fun ruining the country so they can get right back to ruining it themselves.

The Tories deserve to lose, but do Labour deserve to win it ? Giant Douche or Turd Sandwich ?
Reform to splinter the Tory vote ? I think that will have a greater impact than the Workers' Party will have on the Labour vote.
Only trans and gays vote Lib Dem or Green. The places they will get any representation are rich liberal protest votes or Brighton.
I don't think it matters anyway because it all seems to me to be window dressing. If the Civil Service don't like the manifesto they won't enact it and if the judges don't like the laws they will subvert them.
Currently Labour are about 20/1 on to get a majority - so the consensus is that it is very likely to happen.
I do wonder if there was an option to protest the system and the options available, how many votes that would get. Basically if there was a "no confidence" vote.

I've always advocated for "none of the above". It'll never happen, because it would puncture the egos of the political class and show how disgusted the majority of the country is with all of them, but it's nice to dream.

Neither deserve to win, but the Tories have soaked up the anti-immigrant vote with their manifesto lies for 14 years and have presided over the highest level of legal and illegal immigration in history. Their MPs and entire structure is *completely* dominated by open-borders multicultural Britain believers. A vote for the Tories is a vote to continue the exponential rise in immigration, while the press can agitate even further against the "fascist far right Conservatives". A vote for Labour is a vote that the Tories haven't been going far enough. The only tactic that makes sense is to vote for neither - either spoil your ballot or vote for Reform as a bare minimum. It doesn't matter if who you vote for will never get in. The realistic best case scenario (and the only one that doesn't spell a nightmare blackpill long-term) is:

Election:
  • Labour get most of the woke and Muslim vote, and the old socialist vote
  • A significant share of the Labour vote is split off into Green/LibDems for woke, and Workers' Party/independents for Muslims
  • Small fraction of the old-school left splits to the likes of SDP
  • Tories utterly crushed, only pick up the pension-as-a-single-issue voters
  • Reform picks up a large popular vote, still only wins 1 or 2 seats tops
  • Reform supplants Tories as "the" right-wing party (this is the most important point)
  • SNP crushed after Humza "H-WHITE!" Yousef's leadership
  • Overall result: Labour wins a massive majority of seats with a record low level of the popular vote, leaving a gaping hole in the legitimacy of our political system
After election:
  • The (now large) cohort of people too young to remember a time before the Tories realise that a Labour government hasn't turned society into a utopia
  • The huge contradiction between the Muslim voting bloc and the woke one becomes apparent
  • Reform (and others) build themselves up before the next election as the main opposition, while Labour falls apart infighting with its vote share split 3 ways between woke, old-socialist, and explicitly Muslim sectarian parties.
The only possible electoral path to achieving anything involves destroying the Tory party, so that is the number one priority, but it can't be done by legitimising parties that are even worse (eg by tactical voting for Labour).

Reform will never replace the Tories as the 'right wing party' because they're already compromised, they would simply slide down the slippery slope and end up in the exact same position as the Tories are currently ideologically.

There was a protest in London today spearheaded by Tommy Robinson and other "right wing" individuals.

Don't be fooled by the titles including words like diversity. Dude probably had to include them so they'd actually stand a chance of being picked up by the YT algorithms.

Of course the MSM are turning a blind eye to it. The BBC have even claimed that it was to protest the Champions League.

Thanks Bloom Worm Cross Field.
It leads me to two possible conclusions regarding the Conservatives - they claim they want to control / limit immigration, yet the figures go up. So they are either lying and don't really want this ( importing cheap labour to keep costs down for their corporate paymasters ? ) or they have been trying to bring the numbers down and have been thwarted by the oppositon parties / the press / the civil service and the judiciary at every turn.
So they are either liars or completely incompentent. Damned on either account.

I am sorry to break off from the politics talk, but can we have a thread of the best local newspaper headlines that summarise the absolute state of the nation in 2024.

I am looking for an article in the Liverpool Echo (I have my reasons) and have been reduced to partial hysteria by the combination of the following headlines, neatly stacked together:

"Teacher who abused kids in cupboard says 'it was fun for all'" [ed. this is not actually a Daily Mash headline but I wish it was]

"Man calls shopper a 'nonce' and steals his beer"

"People urged to not tie pets' ears together as 'painful' trend resurfaces"

"Man 'felt burning rage' before killing wife and going to Costa"

"Iceland shopper demands store 'come and collect' slugs from his 89p lettuce"

No fucking wonder Charlie Brooker and Chris Morris say they won't make any more Brass Eye because satire is dead. Is the nation having a collective mental episode
