A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Midlands: Yes, many. I have no idea where they keep coming from, but they keep finding their way in.
If it’s an old house check the window frames, that’s the usual bit they start chewing away at. Glad you’re seeing them, wonder why so few round our way.

I haven’t seen any wasps yet thank god but a massive bumblebee got into my office the other week, was adorable

At the weekend I was sat with the kitchen door open and kept having to help honeybees (I think) out that got confused at the window

First Minister John Swinney says the decision to hold a general election as Scottish schools begin their summer break is the "latest act of disrespect" from the UK government.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the poll would be held on 4 July during a rain-soaked speech at 10 Downing Street.

Mr Swinney said that holding the vote on the first week of the holidays showed the impact on Scots "will not have been given a moment's thought".
Is there anything the jocks won't fucking moan about? (this is rhetorical, I know the answer)

Wasn't the last election done while all the uni students were back home to reduce double postal voting? Maybe that's why July.

I feel I should point out that foxgloves are a great addition to any garden. Not only do bees love them, but they look great and are a ready source of [redacted fedpost] years to fix immigration.

Just be careful some wolfsbane doesn't end up infiltrating your garden. My brain kept thinking the wolfsbane plants in Ghost of Tsushima were foxgloves at first on account of their pink flowers in that game.

Have a question, how do I obtain court records? I know there’s freedom of information act but I’ve never needed or wanted to do it before. I know the name, date of court, DOB, court location etc.

Someone I went to school with was arrested and charged last week, not due in court until the end of June. Because I knew them I’m curious as to what is said at the trial, what evidence they found, what insane ramblings were on his devices. I’d link the news but it’s a bit close to me even though I no longer live in that area & it was over a decade ago lol.

If you can find the phone number for whichever magistrates or crown court he will be appearing at start there. If they can't give out the info they can probably point you too whichever ever .gov website will have the information your looking for. The whole court system is backed up pretty bad right now so don't expect a swift response to any requests made online though.

This isn't really something you can do just for idle curiosity. I think they charge a few hundred pounds for this, and make you jump through a lot of hoops.

Some people at the Scottish Green Party can't handle the truth like a few good men from what I read on that article.

Scottish Green Party expels members for stating biological truth

By Eric Utter

The Scottish Green Party recently expelled 13 members for asserting that “sex is a biological reality.”

The 13 now ex-greenies had the temerity, the gall, shall we say the chutzpah, to sign a declaration stating that biological women were entitled to sex-based rights and protections, and expressing concern that gender critical views were being “silenced.”
Well, I never! They are lucky they didn’t receive the death penalty!

The unlucky 13 were ejected because their fellow party members decided that they somehow posed a risk to the “safety of all trans and non-binary members.” What about the risk trans and non-binary members demonstrably pose to non-trans and binary members, especially females? (By way of historical context, in 2018, the Scottish Green Party adopted a rule that said “trans-exclusionary individuals of any kind are not welcome as members.” Talk about exclusionary! LOL! Not very welcoming or tolerant!)
The truth is dangerous to those who have an agenda opposing it. Galileo’s belief in a heliocentric universe threatened Catholic authorities of his time. He was forced to recant his beliefs … and spend the rest of his life under house arrest.

That is comparable to what is happening now to those who dare to posit that there are, essentially, only two sexes, males and females. (Or to those who don’t believe abortion is a “natural right,” or that the coronavirus vaccine mandates were perfectly ethical and legal, or that January 6 was in no way an “insurrection,” Etc., etc.) In fact, the non-religious religion of leftism is far less tolerant, far more vicious, and entertains actions far more vile than anything Catholics thought of doing to Galileo -- or anybody else. That is simply historically -- and statistically -- inarguable. Our modern day “experts/scientists” want to burn nonbelievers at the stake, at least figuratively.
But if sex isn’t a biological reality, nothing is. Humans aren’t, dogs aren’t, etc., as none of us would be here without it. And what about the (formerly?) respected concept of species? Maybe species aren’t real, either.

Thanks both, I’ll see what I can do 8)

The UK government is warning people to prep with tinned food and water in case of national emergencies.

Null once said in one of his streams that if public services stop running, then it's time to evacuate whatever country you're in. Not sure if it applies yet, but it's quite concerning that the gov's warning people to stock up.
Rishi's been banging the drum that Britain is facing "some of the most dangerous years in its history". Scaremongering that changing governments would be dangerous right now seems to be one of his only tactics (especially given how terrible his campaign has been so far) so I wouldn't be shocked if he'd pushed to set up prepare.campaign.gov.uk just to further than narrative.

In more important news, I saw this big plant with red berries near my sister location. Quite prickly but not sure what type. Kinda monkey-puzzle shaped and gorse-ish. Possibly cotoneaster horizontalis or berberis.

Anyway, it was filled with honeybees with a couple of bumblebees also. About 80-20% to 85-15% split.

I've only seen two wasps this year so far (which I'm very happy about) but I've seen a lot of bees, and it does feel like more than normal.

I wonder if it being so shit and grey stopped them coming out early and dying off after a false spring?

Other than the judgement, court transcriptions are rarely releasesed. If you want one you'll have to pay a company to transcribe it for you, they'll usually contact the court. If you don't have an account and are just a 1 time customer, it'll be expensive.

In other news university group tried to pretend gender-critical views are illegal and claims it was a mistake when caught by instead changing it to "transphobic" which is fooling no-one since they already showed their hand.

The Russell Group of elite universities has been forced to make an about-turn after likening those with gender-critical beliefs to anti-Semites and Islamophobes.
The organisation, which represents 24 top universities including Oxford and Cambridge, has apologised after being accused of stifling free speech with a consultation response which said universities should restrict gender-critical speech.
The Office for Students (OfS), which acts as the higher education regulator, launched a consultation on guidance on free speech on campus in March.
Universities and other organisations have been given until this week to respond to the consultation. In its response, the Russell Group said that “universities would be expected to take steps to restrict” unlawful speech.
The initial response went on to say examples “including anti-Semitic, Islamophobic or gender-critical speech” should be included in the OfS’s guidance on free speech on campus.
The organisation later retracted the claim and changed its submission to read to suggest that the guidance include examples of transphobic speech, rather than gender-critical speech.
The group made the change after a furious backlash from academics and free speech campaigners who branded its submission “unacceptable prejudice”.

Gender-critical beliefs are the conviction that people cannot change their biological sex.
Professor Jo Phoenix, who won an employment tribunal for constructive dismissal over her gender-critical views, told the Daily Mail the response was “legally illiterate”.
She said: “Russell Group leadership either does not care about academic freedom or is legally illiterate, and it is unacceptable prejudice to class gender-critical beliefs in the same category as racism and Islamophobia.”
The Free Speech Union, which advocates for freedom of speech and defends those whose right to expression has been violated, said: “Forty per cent of the cases we’ve taken on this year have involved gender-critical feminists getting into trouble for saying something perfectly reasonable that a majority of people would agree with, e.g. male sex offenders shouldn’t be housed in women’s prisons, even if they claim to have ‘transitioned’.”

The consultation was launched over changes to legislation on free speech. Under existing legislation universities and colleges are required to take reasonably practicable steps to secure free speech on campus.
However laws passed in May last year impose new free speech duties on universities and colleges, their constituent institutions and some students’ unions.
The duties, which come into force in August, include a similar duty to take reasonably practicable steps to secure free speech on campus.
The new legislation will also give the OfS more powers and duties to regulate universities and colleges, and their students’ unions, on free speech issues.
A spokesperson for the Russell Group said: “Our original submission to the OfS consultation on free speech guidance contained a serious error, incorrectly listing gender-critical speech as an example of unlawful speech. We apologise unreservedly for this error and we have republished our corrected summary.
“This error in wording was a genuine mistake, and should not have been included in the document. We take our duties on freedom of speech seriously, and all our universities are committed to defending and upholding freedom of speech for everyone in their community.”

Don't know how to get at the replies without having a Twitter account but I have no doubt there will be some bangers.

Meanwhile a literary society in Scotland is trying to get books by "Terfs" banned and also had to pull that advice when caught.

Bookshops have been told by Scotland’s most powerful literary alliance not to sell books written by gender-critical writers or to give the authors public platforms.

As reported by the Times, a briefing document on providing safety for trans people published by the Literary Alliance Scotland (LAS) said that “Terfs” – trans-exclusionary radical feminists, a derogatory term for women considered hostile to trans people – were joining forces with “fascists”.

It said this was a “societal issue” and urged bookshop owners not to “stay out of it”. It added: “This rise in transphobia signals a danger to all LGBTQ+ people, to reproductive rights, etc.”

In a section titled “for bookshops”, the briefing said: “Don’t sell Terf books/platform Terf authors. Don’t expect trans booksellers to sell them. Trans people who see Terf books or ‘gender criticism’ in a bookshop will understand that the bookshop doesn’t want them there.”

The guidance adds: “Terfs are actively joining forces with fascists. For example, see BRAVE books, which seeks to ‘Bring Real American Values that Endure into the hearts and minds of children and their families’.”

The alliance, formed in 2015, is Scotland’s largest literary network with a membership “committed to advancing the interests of literature and languages at home and abroad”, according to its website. It says it is a “trusted, strong, collective voice” that brings together writers, publishers, educators, librarians, literature organisations and national cultural bodies.

On its board are some of the most influential figures in Scottish literature. They include Rosemary Ward, director of programme at the Scottish Book Trust, Marc Lambert, chief executive of the Scottish Book Trust, Vikki Reilly, business development manager at Publishing Scotland and Sophie Moxon, executive director of Edinburgh International Book Festival.

The guidance was written for LAS by Eris Young, a “queer, transgender writer of speculative fiction and non-fiction”. It was removed from the LAS website on Friday after details emerged online.

An LAS spokesman said that the document published on their website in March this year had been uploaded in error and “should have been removed more swiftly”. He said it had been “deemed unsuitable in its current form” and had not been approved by the board.

“We will be investigating the process in which our online materials are uploaded and will revise our procedures,” he added. “We apologise for any confusion or offence this has caused.”

This isn’t the first time trans activists have attempted to instruct those working in the book trade on how to protect the public from ‘immoral’ works published by gender critical authors.

Last year it emerged that a “best practice” guide, titled Welcoming LGBTIQ+ users: advice for public library workers, had been shared among council-run public libraries across the country and contained recommendations on how to handle “transphobic books”. Librarians are urged not to promote works by gender-critical authors and told how to mitigate the “risk” that LGBT readers might encounter these “offensive” titles on shelves.

The guidance also suggests that staff limit the number of gender-critical books they stock.

Produced in 2022 by an Islington “LGBTIQ+ library” called Book 28, the document was until recently available on the website of the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in Scotland, and remains available on the website of the charity Libraries Connected, an organisation whose membership includes every library service in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Book 28’s founder, Southwark Council librarian Isadore Auerbach George, drew up the advice with Lambeth librarian Colette Townend, who recently wrote an article for the trade publication Information Professional on “public libraries’ response to transphobia when making library stock decisions”, and academic Dr Elizabeth Chapman, whose doctoral thesis was on “provision of LGBT-related fiction to children and young people” in public libraries.

In a section titled ‘Transphobic books’, the co-authors warn: “There have been a few titles published which claim to be ‘gender critical’ and argue for removal of trans rights.

“We, along with many in the LGBTIQ+ community, find these books offensive,” they thunder from up on their ideological mount, and issue a decree to the faithful that “these authors and their work can be labelled transphobic, and the writers themselves Terfs”.

Having regretfully noted that such books are “legally published”, the authors advise librarians on how best to guard against the sin of biological blasphemy in their taxpayer-funded woke Sacrament houses: “We do not say you shouldn’t stock these books or consider methods of censorship around them. Rather, we would recommend to be mindful of and not promote these books, and to think carefully about how many you want to buy, perhaps based solely on individual requests.”

It is believed to be Book 28’s guide that led to a number of gender critical books being hidden from view at public libraries within the library service of Calderdale Council, a local authority affiliated with the controversial LGBT charity Stonewall

Following receipt of a “formal grievance” from a single member of staff, Calderdale Council (metropolitan borough population: 206,600) removed a variety of books, all critical of gender ideology and transgender activism, from public view at the Council’s 12 public libraries and placed them out of sight in an off-limits storage space.

The books in question included Dr Joyce’s Trans: When Ideology meets Reality and Prof Kathleen Stock’s Material Girls, bestselling titles which argue that biological sex is immutable and not altered by self-identification.
