A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Saw Bald and Bankrupt did a similar thing. Sad to see what these towns have become, I know what it's like too it happened where I was raised.

On another note, looks like the UK's gonna be under Sharia Law once Labour gets in. Buckle up boys.

I'm pretty sure potholes are worse because of immigrants.

Haven't figured out why yet, but give me some time and I'll come up with something.
Migrants don't have drivers licenses and therefore don't drive
The government is having to spend more money on migrants due to their increased numbers.
ERGO (Latin, given to us like the roads by the last good lot of migrants) it's the migrants fault.
Good enough?
Why are the SNP such snidey little cunts?
Because their entire identity is "fuck the English." They're a bitter ex that defines every one of their life choices by what most goes against the life their former partner is leading.

Edit

The wrong sections have been highlighted. At least two earlier paragraphs are much more dangerously broad.

electric vehicles tend to be heavier than their equivalent counterparts interestingly.
While this is true, the effect is not nearly as severe as you'd think. A Tesla Model 3 is only about ~15% heavier than the most popular ICE equivalent. Similarly brakes/tyres aren't actually as much of an issue as you'd think because what extra wear they'd have from EVs being heavier is generally offset by most of them using regenerative braking which causes slightly less wear than normal braking.

The issue is, as @Otterly pointed out, a combination of local governments refusing to do anything until they absolutely have to (remember this shit?)
pothole tweet.png

combined with them half arseing the job by cheaping out on labour and materials when they do. Why spend 10 or 15 grand to fix it properly today, when you could spend 1 or 2 to temporarily patch it, and kick the can down the road to fuck someone else's budget up instead.

But why are there pot holes like this ?
I've been driving for about 25 years and the situation seems to me to be worsening ( and I drive darn sarf ). Certainly in the last decade or so....
Is it an environmental thing - can we blame it on climate change ? I would say no, as the extremes aren't so severe that they would damage the roads more than previously.
Are vehicles getting bigger / heavier ? Could the extra force on the tarmac be causing it ? There were plenty of lorries around before 2000. I think there probably are more bigger and heavier ( SUVs, 4x4s, estates ) cars on the road now, so possibly a contributing factor.
Number of cars on the road ? 2000 - 27.2mil, 2020 - 32.7mil - so an approximate 20% increase. Significant and again, probably a contributing factor.
Does the size of vehicle and the number reach a tipping point that we have crossed over ? I suppose the counter claim could be ( naively ) that the extra car tax from these types and the number of vehicles should raise enough revenue ( if it were actually spent there ) on repairing the roads ?
Is it a question that with the limited resources available to the government that the powers that be think that the money would be better spent on something else ? Is it a local government rather than national level thing ? Or does it depend on the road ( ie motorways are national, the high street is local ) ?
I don't claim to know the answers, these are just the things that go through my mind when this question is brought up. I'd be interested to see what others thought the problems / solutions were ?
It's a combination of a few things. @Otterly sums part of it up nicely. The other part is that the tarmac is made up of a different, more environmentally friendly and cost-effective (aka, shit) material.

The patches of tarmac used to fill in holes aren't filled properly, are made of shite material and are slapped down hap-hazardly by people who don't give a fuck.

It's a perfect storm. In some places the potholes are so big that you can see the cobble-stoned street below. The roads are rejecting modernity and returning to tradition.

Edit: we also have ubereats and amazon deliveries that have gone mental in popularity over the past 10 years

The ones that stood out to me:

>Making ... claims of a demographic 'threat' posed by Muslims
The percentage of Muslims in Britain has doubled over the last 20 years

>Accusing Muslim citizens of being more loyal to the 'Ummah' ... than to the interest of their own nations
I can't find the poll now, but there was definitely one that said that 70%+ of Muslims themselves thought that Islam was incompatible with British values

>Denying Muslim populations the right to self-determination, e.g. by claiming that the existence of an independent Palestine ... is a terrorist endevavour
Yes, because if there's one thing Palestine's known for, it's its lack of terrorists

Interesting to see Stephen Timms involved in this - presumably he doesn't want to be stabbed again.

I also uncovered this gem from a 2016 poll of British Muslims:

Funny thats in Cheshire West, because last year I fucked one of my tyres driving through because of a deep unavoidable pothole at the top of a hill so you couldn't even see it coming.

It used to be a joke that you could tell when you crossed the border from Derbyshire to Cheshire by the feel of the road. Not so funny any more...

Why the Hell are trans-identifying males being allowed in the Army in the first place? Either they haven't had surgery in which case you're putting an intact male into women's private spaces or they have in which case they're no less a danger to the women but now also are a walking medical special requirements. And either way, it's a serious mental disorder.
Whenever there is no clear deployment into a warzone, women and their pet sex deviants decide they want to take some pictures of themselves for insta fame.

It's great when a war starts, and they are killing themselves when the reality of war comes knocking. See any Russia/Ukraine thread for plenty of women breaking down and claiming to be pregnant.

Any nation that allows its women in the army is a doomed nation.

Toffy husband of a minor royal has died suddenly for no reason and everyone is baffled.

Thomas Kingston, husband of Lady Gabriella Kingston and son in law of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, has died at the age of 45, Buckingham Palace has announced.

He was found dead at an address in Gloucestershire on Sunday evening, with emergency services called to the scene.

There were no suspicious circumstances and no one else was involved.

King Charles and Queen Camilla sent their "most heartfelt thoughts and prayers" to his family.

A statement from Mr Kingston's widow Lady Gabriella and his family, issued by Buckingham Palace, paid tribute to Mr Kingston: "Tom was an exceptional man who lit up the lives of all who knew him."

The death was described as a "great shock to the whole family".

An inquest will be held.

Lady Gabriella is the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent - with Prince Michael, aged 81, being a grandson of King George V and first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

I bet he keeled over when Princess Michael said something rude.

Some needed context to this one. A Tory MP says Sadiq's sold London out to Islamists. Guess who suddenly conveniently gets threats from those groups but just never mentioned it till now?

The mayor of London, accused by a former senior Tory MP of being under the control of “Islamists”, is in fact facing death threats from Islamist extremists, the Guardian has learned.

Sadiq Khan has been receiving police protection, usually reserved for a handful of senior cabinet ministers or royals, since 2017.

A source with knowledge of the security arrangements said that as well as currently facing threats of violence from the extreme far right, Khan also faces threats from Islamist extremists.

London’s mayor was vocal in denouncing Islamist terrorism when the city was subject to two Jihadist attacks in 2017, after the subsequent attack on Manchester, and when a far-right extremist targeted worshippers leaving a London mosque.

Khan, the first Muslim mayor of the capital, has a team of about 15 police protection officers protecting him around the clock.

Some Islamist extremists see Muslims in public office in western democracies as potential targets. As an MP, Khan voted for same-sex marriage and has championed gay rights as mayor.

It also emerged on Tuesday that a man had pleaded guilty to making threats against Khan after Lee Anderson’s comments.

Christopher Massey, 52, from Ipswich, twice called the control room of Suffolk constabulary.

The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed he had pleaded guilty on Monday to two counts of sending communication threatening death or serious harm.

The threat was made on Saturday. The charge against Massey said that in the phone call to police he had “conveyed a threat of death or serious harm to another, intending or being reckless as to whether an individual encountering the message would fear that the threat would be carried out”.

Massey is scheduled to be sentenced on 21 March at Ipswich magistrates court for the offences under the 2023 Online Safety Act.

A source close to the mayor of London said: “Sadiq faces threats from a wide range of sources. His main concern has always been the safety of his family, and also that young people from his background will be put off entering public life.”
Nameless source and it just never got mentioned yet Sadiq cries about the far right every other day. How unusual, why would he hide threats from one group and publicise others?

As a cleanser have pine marten news.

Pine martens could be reintroduced to the south east of England.
The rare creatures, members of the weasel family, were common across the UK until hunting and habitat loss drove them to the brink of extinction.
A group of conservation organisations are now exploring ways of reintroducing them to woods in Kent and Sussex.
A public consultation into the scheme has been launched.
The Pine Marten Restoration Project is a partnership between Kent Wildlife Trust, the Wildwood Trust, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Ashdown Forest and Forestry England.
The cat-sized predators, which are a relative of stoats and otters, have been successfully reintroduced in other parts of the country.
Scientists have also found evidence they are breeding in the New Forest.
The animals prefer well-wooded areas with plenty of cover and largely feed on small rodents, birds, insects and fruit.
Scientists believe they have an important role to play in biodiversity and conservation, particularly in controlling the numbers of invasive grey squirrels and protecting populations of native red squirrels.

Along with studies to determine whether the habitat is suitable in the south east, the project is also consulting the public.
Matt Phelps, species recovery officer for the Sussex Wildlife Trust, said: “Local people are crucial to the success of any proposed reintroduction project.
“We want to hear from anyone who may have questions, concerns or might want to be involved in the project on a voluntary level."
