A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

Conway went on to explain that this co-opting of the symbol, the police and military are fundamentally misunderstanding the character, what he stands for, and are aligning themselves with a criminal.

Or, perhaps, they like the name and skull, but do not read children's stories so they know nothing about what the character is supposed to stand for.
 
It drives me personally insane to see the Punisher skull everywhere. Southerners love it because they're all pro-military and put it on almost everything. Window stickers, shirts, hats, rings, necklaces, iron-on patches, if it's commercially available, someone's put a skull on it.

The Punisher was a 'Nam vet who's family was killed by mobsters and when the crooked police force of NYC failed him, he turned into a gun-crazy psychopath with no morality, why the fuck is he so popular with armed forces

Exactly. It's the same with cops and Blue Lives Matter followers plastering the skull all over their cars - even though the Punisher makes a big point of targeting law enforcement.

The Punisher skull is very distinctive and utilizes several instantly-recognizable elements:

Note the glaring eye-holes shaped like the space between a trigger and its guard, sight-shaped nostrils, hammer-shaped "cheekbones", and "teeth" evocative both of a bandoleer and the cylinder of a revolver. These were all deliberate stylistic choices by the Romita-Andru team to combine the traditional totenkopf iconography of the military with elements of modern weaponry to create an instantly recognizable icon for the antihero (and, more importantly, one that could be trademarked). Any other skull that lacks this specific combination of elements would be acceptable under these orders.

The Punisher is actually highly moral in the sense that he would never consider harming an innocent: he just sees virtually all crimes as deserving the death penalty, carried out by himself.
As for why the character is popular with police and the armed forces, it's a very appealing and primal power fantasy to be a champion of justice destroying evil where a weak and (symbolically) castrated leadership will not, and the character has enough grit, menace, and transgressive edge to appeal to the military and the sort of police officer who joins the force thinking that their day-to-day life will be shooting up drug dealers left and right like Dirty Harry.

Skulls and the Jolly Roger have been around since at least the early 18th century and it's somewhat humorous to think some faggy PC reg is going to magically stop military personnel from using it.

I remember reading a few years back how some SAS guys tried to smuggle guns back to the UK for their personal protective use after they were finished their service. Now those were firearms and everyone knows how the UK feels about its subjects having guns. They're already thinking of cheeky ways to get around this dumb shit, guaranteed.

I can't say I can see this being at all enforceable. It's a velcro patch, they're not going to have the PC police following them into the field to make sure they don't stick it on their shoulder once they're off the FOB.

On the other hand, I always rolled my eyes when I saw guys wearing or doing what an old sergeant of mine referred to as "cheerleader bullshit", like this or that molon labe crap.

They shouldn't be wasting their time thinking of cheeky ways around this. They should simply tell whoever gave them this order to fuck off and never waste their time again.

I agree totally with people who think cops shouldn't be allowed to go around with stickers and badges like these. Cops interact with the public all the time and this image is totally wrong for the job. But whichever cunt is trying to tell SAS members what badges they can and cannot wear needs to be removed from their position.
 
They should just say that they're using the skull of the PG rated Punisher, the one that teams up with Spider-Man and doesn't kill people. Alternatively they could use Ghost Rider, he's a skull-man.
 
Normally in war you win over your enemies and show respect. But these are sand niggers from ISIS. Scare the crap out of em, punisher skulls pokemon or what ever they hate should not just be allowed but mandatory.

I kinda understand why since we (western powers) are still on the winning hearts and mind idea, but the people were are fighting are proving that's not possible or worth while so who cares if we look edgy doing it we have to drive them out like rats.
