A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

So is it happening for real?
According to Bloomberg's UK Political Editor yesterday:
An ally of Wes Streeting - who came out publicly to call for Starmer to go - says Streeting has “blown it.” They say he has lost support today from MPs who might have backed him and that they now don’t think he has the numbers to get on the ballot.
The BBC today:
"Wes doesn't have the numbers and Andy doesn't have a seat, for all this noise," one supporter of the prime minister told me. "Wes has bottled it, and caused massive damage and instability in the process."

The question isn't so much "does Labour want Keir to go" and more "does Labour want to be lead by Wes Streeting", and I think the answer to that is no. Incredibly, gloriously messy that this is all happening during the King's Speech.

His visit to Number 10 this morning lasted 15 minutes.
Longer than John Major lasted with Edwina Currie.

I'm putting a fiver on Mad Ed.

edit:

He's lost the unions. (live)

Deputy Political Editor of the Spectator:
Tory MP tells me that not a single government MP has been put down on the Speaker's list to speak today in the King's Speech debate

Today's the first day of the King's Speech, so it's mostly pageantry. The running order is roughly
11:30 - 12:30 - Black Rod, King's Speech etc. Happened as planned, although amusingly Labour MP Torcuil Crichton shouted "not now, Andy!" when the Black Rod was knocking on the door.
State opening ceremony
14:30 Outlawries bill (more ceremony)
Then a debate on the Loyal Address (a motion that a humble Address be presented to His Majesty thanking him for his Speech)

MPs give the Speaker notice that they want to speak, so they get picked first (otherwise they have to wait to catch the speaker's eye). Normally you would expect Labour MPs to be putting their names down so they can debate the Loyal Address, which in practice means they get to talk about practically any aspect of government policy, and they're usually light hearted and an excuse to brag about their constitutency and what a great job the government is doing.
The motion is moved and seconded by two backbenchers, chosen by the Government from their own side, traditionally pairing a newer MP with an experienced parliamentarian. By convention, their speeches are light in tone, often featuring humour – or attempted humour – alongside proud references to their constituencies.

That there's nobody putting their names down on the Speakers List means that MPs are feeling that they do not want to be seen defending the Starmer ministry.

If the Greens had any standards at all there wouldn't have been the Challenor Debacle

TLDR: Crazy tranny, had father as election agent while father was on bail for imprisoning and raping a child. The Greens knew and continued to endorse the Challoners for years. In the end Challoner went to the Lib Dems where he was welcomed with open arms. He's now in the US living in some kind of ABDL polycule.
You don't hate them enough.
The whole UK political establishment and social media circles covered it up. The Reddit cover up was the worst. Absolutely disgusting. I will never, ever, believe that he did not know his father had a little girl locked up in the attic. The father also definitely abused him.

Do we have any Welsh voters here? The Plaid First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth congratulated Dan Thomas and Reform on their wins in the Senedd.
Plaid Cymru First Minister of Wales congratulates Reform on the election win, saying they'll "no doubt be a formidable presence" in the Senedd. Adding, "I will always welcome scrutiny."
Yes yes very polite and standard politics but most of the Greens here refused to shake Reforms hand. know Rhun thinks borders don't exist and worked for the BBC but I am interested to see how Plaid/Reform plays out in the Senedd. Llanaelhaearn Council (mostly independents who are locals to my understanding) have pushed the idea that only Welsh speakers should be given (new) council houses, and other Welsh councils have been very vocal about not giving houses to 'people from Birmingham', which I think we can all agree is a euphemism for pakis. If Reform don't back Welsh-first policies, then what is the point?

a little girl locked up in the attic.
His little sister, no less.
It was a tiny council house, he definitely knew.
This was the shitstorm on r/ukpol (mea culpa) that lead to me finding this place.
I still pop into the mega threads over there when things get "febrile" (this is one of their favourite words, a sure tell of a ukpol veteran).
They're useful for fast moving stories, and Larry spotting, as there's more of them, they're obsessed and constantly news watching.

It was his cousin, not his sister. His mother was all over the place online while the trial was going on, calling her a little whore that seduced her husband etc. as if anyone was going to believe it. The whole lot of them need the rope.

Absolutely disgusting. I will never, ever, believe that he did not know his father had a little girl locked up in the attic.
He hired his father as an election agent while he was on trial, and the defence was "I didn't know that my Dad was raping a little girl in our attic, and I didn't know what he was on trial for despite having been interviewed by police about my Dad raping a little girl in our attic".
Monster. His partners seem to be nonces too. His half brother transitioned and took on the name Challenor after the father was charged. It's what got me posting here again.

Everywhere that smug bitch Leyla Cunningham campaigned; crashed and burned. SUFFER BISCH!
I am so glad that mouthy bitch got ousted,
I really don't understand the weird power that Miliband appears to wield. That man is the human equivalent of a cress sandwich and yet there's been this persistent push to put him into power for years.
I'll admit I like the thought of Miliband rather than Starmer, but I'd prefer Cherie Blair in Number 10 at this point.
It is because he is the grandfather of the party, akin to Diane Abbot. Abbot is strangely correct about some things EXCEPT MATHS, but the one thing I will give both Ed and Abbot is that they put party in their interests. I will say that too about Streeting as well. Starmer has contempt for every one of them; he is truly a psychopath.

I would rather have Milliband at this point, honestly. Starmer is dangerous because of his clear self-interest, but also because his cronies are inept. I read that even Miliband was against Brown and Harman entering Number 10.

If you ever want to see a human being break the land speed record, mention challenor to a liberal democrat. Despite the fact my lib dem councillors do a good job, and are liked,I didn't vote for them. They canvassed my neighbourhood quite hard (as did reform and the independent, the others were nowhere to be seen) and one of them asked me why I wouldn't vote for them. The answer to, will bongo mongo ever vote lib dem or green, will always be one word: challenor.

I have an especial hatred for child abusers and the woodchipper should be the answer to them all. And his wife was fucking reprehensible. A woman who views her husband who abuses kids in the context of "they seduced my husband!" is the lowest of the lowm

I don't see Plaid and Reform working together in most cases. Plaid and Reform are the opposite of each other in many policies (Plaid being more like the SNP in many aspects)

It would not surprise me if they don't back welsh first policies that excluded almost all of the UK from being in public housing in wales if they don't speak welsh. Only because it's not English language included. Can't imagine any council in Scotland where Gaelic is more prominent would get away with it without some uproar from Unionists.

Which is where I think reform UK will do is that anything that excludes the rest of the UK from doing anything in wales they will be against. They are Tories but in a different shade of blue after all and I don't expect them to put Wales first

Tbh even the SNP would baulk at that. Granted, there's a heavy push for Gaelic but, as much as they might hate it, English is still the predominant language (despite how the Glaswegians might maul it).

Best Scottish separatist I ever met wanted out the UK, but also out of the EU, and I can at least respect the consistency there. I still maintain the finest ten seconds of my electroral life were voting no in 2014.

The Welsh speaking population of Wales is like 500k there's 3.5 million people here, how the fuck are they going to deny Welsh born and raised people from public housing because they are part of the majority of Welshmen who don't speak our phlegm language.

The Conservatives published what they would put in the King's Speech, and I am not going to lie, this is all good shit. They should have done this shit a decade ago, and I do not necessarily believe them.
They've cribbed most of this from Reform and Restore. but then, I've heard it said that you can achieve a great deal if you don't care who gets the credit. If the tories ride to power on this and then follow through, it's fine.

IF.

Literally yes, it's like a really weak Restore policy list. Now that Nigel is being investigated, I think Reform is toast. If Nigel goes, the support for the party crumbles. You have the vestiges of the Tories leading and a Paki (Sri Lankan). Starmer lacks foresight and does not realize that Lowe is his true enemy, not Nigel. Lowe is the antithesis of Starmer in every way. It's going to be pretty funny.

arrested, charged and convicted in 48 hours. FFS they're actually proud of that.

They're not going to because they're lunatics, and any Green majority council is probably dealing with constituents who prioritise ineffectual comments about Palestine over bin collections.
The Greens voter base is going to cause the party to unravel at some point in the future. The muslim core are probably the most stable and coherent part. They're disciplined focused on a few core issues ie Israel, criminalising anti islamic speech as well as getting control of some local authorities. They'll stay on message and put up with all the lgbt shit and having to vote for that ditz in Gorton. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't the muslim brotherhood activists that pushed to have a weak easily controlled candidate selected.

Who won't stay on message however are the other sections of their voter base. There's an affluent section of public sector, quango, ropey consultants and nonprofit workers that want their gravy train to stay on the tracks, all the while maintaining property prices and engaging in hardcore NIMBYism. Then you've got the genuine working-class voters surviving in an economy that's foundation is low wages. That last section are going to be surprised when if the greens do manage to get into a coalition in the next government all they succeed in doing is adding a couple of thousand pages to the tax code while focusing on looking after 'marginalised' communities and making sure nothing can ever be built again.

Polanski is getting an easy ride from the media now but that’s because they’re keeping their powder dry. Waiting untill he can get into a position of power before they tear him down. Which will probably suit Mothin Ali.
