A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

We (British) put our own takes on food and most of our "ethnic" food isn't exactly like it would be in the native lands in the first place.
A lot of the people making these sorts of arguments are arch cosmopolitans who worship at the altar of "authenticity". To them, something like "Spanish rice" or "Hungarian Goulash" or "Spag Bol" is a crime against humanity. What do you mean, you're using bacon instead of guanciale in your midweek carbonara dinner, don't you know that's not how Italians do it? The sort of people who see this as peak cultural cringe:

Doubly so if it's ethnic food, because knowing what's authentic is a shibboleth for being part of the in-group.

Of course, actual immigrants make substitutions all the time based on availability of ingredients, and are just as likely to take shortcuts like picking up a pack of those frozen parathas in ASDA.

If you present this as "fusion cuisine" between two non-Western cultures (e.g. Hawaiian/Japanese) on a fancy stall in Borough Market, the very same people will happily hand over their money.

Do we get another series of Sharpe? I’m all for it ..,

Keir Starmer says he isn't sure working class people believe Labour care about them; "That's tough to say, when you come from a working class background like me". MP David Smith is calling for him to resign.

This email was sent from MP Catherine West who is no longer seeking a leadership challenge but is seeking support for a timetable for him to resign in the hope it triggers a leadership contest.

Statement from Lowe calling for an investigation into barbers etc.
Alongside our new county councillors, I have written to the Chief Exec of Norfolk County Council demanding a robust investigation into the growing number of vape shops, Turkish barbers and other suspicious businesses emerging across our constituency. We want enforcement action.

"Unlike the Tories?" Cameron literally resigned after the result!

Lifelong Labour and Tories are going to be doing a lot of this in the election aftermath, the death of the two party system would be a nightmare for many of them and there'll be lots of talk about "respectable politics" and "populism" in the near future. I see that David Smith is already sneaking it in.

Wat?

Where is goulash from then?
I guess it's because of all the paprika, which as you are surely aware, isn't native to eastern europe.

Either that or it was retroactively made into an exotic foreign dish to deprive Orbman of his delicious heritage.

I meant "Hungarian Goulash" like "Spanish chicken". Stuff like this that you'd get in an 80s cookbook
42260.jpg
which would probably confuse a Hungarian if presented to them as "goulash" (a very liquidy soupy beef stew).
If you do ever get a chance to serve "Spanish chicken"

to a Spaniard, I do recommend it because it's hilarious.

Wes Streeting and Owen Jones were fucking at some point in time according to twitter rumours. Jesus Christ the left wing is so incestuous. We need a chart to track the Lord Ali, Keir, Streeting, Mandelson, Randy Andy, the rent boys, and now Jones, web of boy fucking perverts. I'm surely missing someone. Sadiq Kahn? He's always come off as a poof to me.

Honestly I never really thought about that. But Hungarians seem pretty proud about having "come up" with the dish, and I see no reason to deny them that just because they got an ingredient from somewhere else. Any more that I would say fish and chips isn't British because potatoes aren't originally from here.

Ahh, right.

I'm pretty sure my mum has that cookbook. The random capitalisation of CROCK-POT seems very familiar...

It's pretty much an open secret that if it has a penis, a pulse and a vague connection to politics then Wes Streeting has tried to have sex with it. That's not specific to left wing politics either, there's a rumoured link to Tom Harwood. But by all accounts Streeting goes to orgies, and his marriage is open, regardless of any noise he makes about his faith and how he reconciled his sexuality to it.

He was at Lord Alli's "parties" with Starmer. It's guaranteed all three have fucked one another at some point.

Wes 'Booty Warrior' Streeting. Letting anyone but heterosexual white guys into politics was such a fucking error. Like, my god. Nearly a thousand years of functional rule; less than 200 of faggotry being anything other than a death sentence and we're on the brink. Insane how fast these sorts of perverts can destroy things.

I'm going to say something that might go against the grain in this thread: I really dislike Owen Jones.
I don't think anyone likes him, do they? He's a cunt.and that book, Chavs, he wrote was so smug and patronising.

He's a noxious lefty and a faggot. Basically everything I hate on two legs.

Owen got replaced once he hit deep twink death and was swapped out for that fat faggot Benjamin Butterworth. The government and the governments propaganda arm love to perpetuate this weird, metrosexual; castrated view of the country. It's soft pastel colours, and fluffy sweaters, and meekly shopping around DFS for some cushions. A completely energyless, placid, plodding eidolon of the nation. I hate it, and Owen Jones and Benjamin Butterworth are part of that vibe. Gross.

Urgh. Owen Jones is a revolting little creature.
Wonder if the rumours of the demon Blair being ‘Miranda’ are true ?

This is absolutely fascinating, I am so interested to see how the reactions from Labour will go. So far, it seems that they still don't understand what is happening, which is just incredible.

David Smith writes 13 paragraphs and only mentions that it might be an idea to listen to the electorate in paragraph 9. He thinks these elections were about people's verdict on Labour's last 2 years in power! Holy fucking shit! Why can they not hear what people have been screaming in their faces for the past 20 years?!

It is CRYSTAL CLEAR that this was ONE HUNDRED PERCENT about immigration. If you only had the Reform results to go on, then maybe you could convince yourself that it was just the British public punishing the government a little bit out of general dissatisfaction.
But the second you look at the Great Yarmouth results, that flies out the window. They won every seat they ran for, and in every single instance Reform came in second place, and in every single instance GYF got at least twice as many votes as Reform.
So, if people only have a milquetoast, wishy-washy, token anti-immigration option, they'll take it - but the second you put a real, unashamed, genuinely anti-immigration option on the table, people will grab it with both hands.

Why can't Labour see this?

The first payroll resignations have taken place - the Parliamentary Private Secretaries (lowest level of ministerial rank) for Streeting, Mahmood and Emma Reynolds have all quit.

The plan appears to be for the Cabinet to present Starmer with an ultimatum tomorrow - set out your departure plans or be bounced.
