A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.


But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

When I was a kid I used to be fucking terrible with anxiety and shit like that when it came to going to school. But I just like went to school and got over it. Scotland (read north sea oil/gas) is one of the key parts of the English economy and without them the entire power grid would probably overload and shut down. I don't think I've ever seen Labour try this type of messaging before. It's something I would expect from Britain First or the BNP back then. They are still trying to play both sides of the political spectrum and are failing at both.

And they wonder why the polls are stuck at 50/50.

The biggest problem with the Independence movement is that there is barely any Right-wing parties to make points for it. Most of it come from the SNP and the Scottish Greens.

Westminster have made tons of things worse that the Scottish Government could of done something to prove a point that Independence would matter to people. Freedom of speech getting torn to shreds, self defense being nonexistent without getting punished for it, horrific crimes getting light slaps. Something like this should be opportunities to nationalist/separatist movements to use as ammo. What does the SNP do? Take the same stance as Westminster or even make stupider steps like with the Gender Change shit they tried to impose that made them get shit for it by everyone.

What's the point of trying to make a big noise for it if you are just going to do the same fucking thing. When the funding for fiber cabling for FTTP broadband was given to them and plus adding extra funding from themselves towards it. What do they do? Give a majority of it to fucking BT and Openreach to slowly spread it across the country. Not putting the infrastructure down yourself and renting out to ISPs so you can tax it to help maintain the service. Not giving it to Scottish ISPs so there is competition against a Major British owned company that owns all the network infrastructure. Nope, just fucked it.

Good idea giving a majority of your funding to a Major British Company instead of putting it down yourself or local ISPs when you are trying to get Scottish Independence, Can't see how that can backfire.

Now I will say that Westminister has been involved in refusing or cancelling projects from the Scottish Government that I somewhat support like trying to get people to clean up the enviroment and recycling material for small money, kind of like bringing back empty ginge glass bottles for some change. (It's why you may see some places like Aldi have these buildings that are outside it that are just standing there. It was for people to put recycable material and get some sort of credit or cash for it.) But the Tories shut it down when other superstore brands complained about it along with something to do with glass being part of the options to recycle.

That type of interferring is one of the big reasons why I'm for Independence because anything that could be a decent idea from the Scottish Government may be stopped by Westminster stooges. Don't know what I would do if one of my projects was canned out of nowhere by a higher power but I wouldn't go down quietly for it which is why I don't know why the SNP haven't been using this as a proving point once it happened other than they agree with them.

I have never liked tactical voting. It leaves you trapped in some local maxima where you may get the best immediate solution, but only from the list of solutions approved for you to choose between. Which is never that much choice.

If I could get one political concept across to the electorate it would be that sometimes you have to take a short-term hit to make a long-term gain. That to get to the top of a mountain you first have to go down from the hill you're on. Or to use the old line: "You can't get there from here."
