A heated row has broken out over a move by Britain's largest bakery chain to launch a vegan sausage roll.

The pastry, which is filled with a meat substitute and encased in 96 pastry layers, is available in 950 Greggs stores across the country.

It was promised after 20,000 people signed a petition calling for the snack to be launched to accommodate plant-based diet eaters.

But the vegan sausage roll's launch has been greeted by a mixed reaction: Some consumers welcomed it, while others voiced their objections.

Cook and food poverty campaigner Jack Monroe declared she was "frantically googling to see what time my nearest opens tomorrow morning because I will be outside".

While TV writer Brydie Lee-Kennedy called herself "very pro the Greggs vegan sausage roll because anything that wrenches veganism back from the 'clean eating' wellness folk is a good thing".

One Twitter user wrote that finding vegan sausage rolls missing from a store in Corby had "ruined my morning".

Another said: "My son is allergic to dairy products which means I can't really go to Greggs when he's with me. Now I can. Thank you vegans."

TV presenter Piers Morgan led the charge of those outraged by the new roll.

"Nobody was waiting for a vegan bloody sausage, you PC-ravaged clowns," he wrote on Twitter.

Mr Morgan later complained at receiving "howling abuse from vegans", adding: "I get it, you're all hangry. I would be too if I only ate plants and gruel."

Another Twitter user said: "I really struggle to believe that 20,000 vegans are that desperate to eat in a Greggs."

"You don't paint a mustach (sic) on the Mona Lisa and you don't mess with the perfect sausage roll," one quipped.

Journalist Nooruddean Choudry suggested Greggs introduce a halal steak bake to "crank the fume levels right up to 11".

The bakery chain told concerned customers that "change is good" and that there would "always be a classic sausage roll".

It comes on the same day McDonald's launched its first vegetarian "Happy Meal", designed for children.

The new dish comes with a "veggie wrap", instead of the usual chicken or beef option.

It should be noted that Piers Morgan and Greggs share the same PR firm, so I'm thinking this is some serious faux outrage and South Park KKK gambiting here.

French PM's wife videoed pushing him by the face, interesting peek into the background of that weird relationship. She used to be his teacher and there's a 25 year age gap between them.

If Starmer can't get good stuff from a man who lets his wife beat him up, what hope is there?

We've all seen that ype of face grab, and it;'s the drunk girl at the club/pub "don't tell me what to do" face grab, drunk-nothing more. But keep speculating.

I used that excuse when drunk and the missus needed putting in her place, and the police were really unresponsive to it (I kid, the police love wifebeaters).

Also they're french, mild abuse between spouses is just the culture there.

I don't think that's true, but it's funny so I won't check it, and assume you're right. Hilarious.
I used to live in France for a year. They look at your funny if you ask for oral medication over suppositories.

Go into any chemist in France and ask for cold medicine (some of that stronger behind-the-counter stuff for bad ones) and they will by default grab suppositories over oral medicine.

If I was being charitable maybe she slipped? But no, it seems like he was leaning in and got rebuffed, that's pure panic-grimace on his face as soon as he sees the door is opened. I wonder who batters who more often.

Oh, I've heard that Starmer can go at least eleven rounds 'in the ring'...

Allegedly...!

Why do this in a residential area? Stick it out on a empty bit of brown belt. That is insane.
I think the agenda with this stuff goes beyond the usual misplaced compassion into a vindictive sense of righteousness.

The planning officers and quango involved know this upsets the proles, but think the proles are wrong for feeling so and so they must be shown the error of their ways

The types of people who would think this sort of scheme is a good idea probably didn't even think twice about the logistics and possible issues which could arise from sticking a crack den in the middle of a council estate. All they likely cared about was how progressive it made them look and where to place it so that it was as far away from them as possible.

Don't expect 'academics' to have either empathy or common sense.

These are the same people who, as kids, most likely had one of these and cried that the square wouldn't fit in the triangle:

Why is Glasgow such a drug-addled city? Like, why specifically that city in Scotland?
It hasn't recovered from the loss of Shipbuilding on the Clyde, which was its main industry.

Similar to how where I live, South Wales, is still poor after the demise of King Coal. Cardiff has always prospered at the expense of The Valleys.

The ironic thing is that ships can be built on the Clyde (and at Swan Hunter in Wallsend, Tyne & Wear) without being eco-unfriendly and Wales has clean coal which can be used or exported.

When 'experts' decide that they'd sacrifice poorer people and communities to serfdom, just because they need to feel superior, this is often the end result.

Poverty, high local levels of serious organised crime, and easy to reach quickly within a couple of hours from Manchester and Liverpool to be kept supplied.

It is a great city and I would really recommend a visit but the loss of industry and perpetual Labour and SNP councils have absolutely fucked large areas of it.

Nearly all the chippies are shit though.

The industrial heartlands had their hearts ripped out. The valleys, the shipyards, the steel mills and the pits in South Yorkshire.
You can trace a direct line from that to the rest of the country being degraded, sold off, demoralised and now ethnically replaced.
