When bad things happen, it's never the fault of the method those people use to communicate that they did the bad thing. The paternalist in all of us can be seduced by the lulling rhetoric of "we must stop fake news because it's causing lynchings." However, you boil that down to its Orwellian essence and you get "we must control the information people see in order to control their behaviour" which doesn't sound nearly as good. Does any of us really want someone in charge of deciding for us what is true and what is false, and how long do you think it's going to be before they start using that power to manipulate us for their own benefit?

What's happening in India is what is bound to happen when you drop first world telecommunication infrastructure on a third world community. This is exactly how criminals and other reprobates were handled in the pre-modern era. Before we had jails and police, social ostracism, banishment and lynchings were the tools people used to enforce societal norms. Many, many Indians still live in that society. There's amusing expressions of the fact we have pre-modern people on our modern internet, vis. show bobs and vagene, and there's the less amusing part that people are forming themselves in to lynch mobs to tackle criminals, and sometimes they get their targets wrong. India needs to work on trust in the police and making it so most people's encounters with officialdom are positive and not excuses to extort a bribe. Blaming their societal ills on a messaging app is just stupid.

This is a really good post, inspite of the Firefly clip.

"Huawei Facts" sounds like a TRUE and HONEST objective account if there ever was one.

Knowing that John is a habitual liar and shady, I wouldn’t take his word for anything on the WhatsApp India story.

Also, if you don’t think Huawei and the Chinese government are colluding into spying then you’re an idiot.

Huawei is a chinese phone company; as it is chinese, it is ostensibly owned by the Chinese State.
So they are Chinese company complaining their treatment isn't in line with a foreign governnment (the US) consitituion.
if they were concerned about "Global Citizens" hows about talking about the people in Chinese reeducation camps for wrong think and daring to talk about chinese democracy?

Isn’t it super weird that account is verified and spewing anti-us propaganda from a Chinese company, which like @Ghostse said, is basically owned by the Chinese state? Gee wonder why Twitter would allow that??

They’re also spouting word for word propaganda that was stated by China when CAnada arrested Meng Wanzhou.

Also, China is monitoring the social media activity of its citizens and issuing them social credits which affect every aspect of their life from loans, jobs, travel, etc. you’d have to be a complete idiot to not think they would try and monitor foreigners as well.

I’d say it’s very dangerous for a congressional candidate to be siding with our enemies like Brianna Wu is here.

Who would win (bad foreign actors using technology edition):

a Chinese multibillion dollar cutting edge technology research firm with the power to create, ship, and sell consumer products across the entire planet
vs
a few Russians making memes while staying on the family's pig farm

Snuggling up too close to the chinese was part of the downfall of an Australian labor party senator, Sam Dastyari. He was a slimy little fuck, just like John!

I will never, ever understand why allegedly professional mainstream media outlets think having this bug eyed grotesque on the air does anything for their credibility.

Huawei is shady as fuck. A few years ago, they proposed standards for auditing router software which were deliberately weak, and paid US companies to promote those proposals to IETF.

He should hire the Bloomberg makeup crew for his 2020 scampaign, they somehow managed the impossible and made him more closely resemble a human than in any other previous televised event.

It's really just two things: his clothing is cleaner than we usually see it, and somebody did something semi-competent with his hair. I'm not 100% it isn't a wig.

N-NANI?‽ I brought up my murdered tranny friend and it had n-no effect on the discourse?‽ What a fucking whore!

Don't worry John the problem will solve itself once bitcoin uses all the energy available in the universe.

(Also 200% demoralised)

I'm bit late on this, but I'd note that Wu is outright lying on the whole "trans are most murdered group in america" thing (and possibly on the other, non-suicide bits as well). Trans people are murdered at a rate of roughly 2.1 per 100,000, which lower than the rate for white people, which is about 2.5 per 100,000. While there is a small margin of error as not all my data is from the same year and it's sometimes not known or confirmed that a victim is trans, her claim is still laughable. As the total number of trans murders is only about 30 a year, there would need to be several hundred more trans murders each year before they top the 19 per 100,000 murder rate of black people, the actual demographic with the highest murder rate.

Sauce?

Miguel de Icaza was already a personal lolcow of mine

Finally, someone vindicates my distaste for that guy. All I can say is: #metoo

This shit gave me autism.

Wu, the "almost correct yet totally wrong". Refactoring (or, "refucktoring") should never be performed on big pieces of code. My favorite approach is to take small, substandard functions or duplications and fix them without changing how they interface.

Wu saying "refactor everything" is called "rewrite" and anyone who ever did a rewrite know how much your asshole will hurt at the end of this process. Refactoring is fixing stuck drawers and replacing burned up bulbs, "refactoring everything" is building the house anew.

various wikipedia pages, articles, etc. I think the key one was this article, since info on the murder rate within the trans community is not widely reported or tracked federally, everything else you can find pretty easily.

Said article also sheds a bit more light on that murder rate, since several of the listed ones (think it was 3, but it's been a while so that might be off a bit) were working as prostitutes at the time of their murder, and it's not like hooking is a profession known for it's low mortality rate.
