John constantly references Starship Troopers and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. If he'd ever read Farnham's Freehold, he would understand why everyone who is well and truly woke finds Heinlein a loathsome icon of the racist and oppressive patriarchy. Of course, that would require John to actually read s book, which ain't gonna happen.

That's eye-opening John, I had no idea that dirt-poor economic migrants from Central America had access to cutting edge defence technology labs in China. It's 100% certain that high-level anti-drone technology already exists or is being developed by the military. So yeah, who cares; it won't be a problem at all. Wu again just using hyperbole to obfuscate the fact that she knows jack shit about anything and making some minor issue into something she can wail about to look like she cares about anything other than herself.
Also drones are not the future of warfighting, Obama was ethering kids with them years ago. She really thinks swarms of drones are going to be fighting wars for us. How can one person be so spectacularly stupid at such a consistent rate?

It's interesting that John's reading list is heavy on the Heinlein, and doesn't seem to include any of the queer women of color that have been cleaning up the Hugos.
It makes me think that perhaps John wasn't invited to the cool kids table, and might be holding a grudge.

More likely than not, all those Hugo Award-winning novels by queer women of color have not been rendered into audiobook format, so John can't listen to them yet, even if he did have a passing interest in those titles.

They've been having "guest editors" for the Christmas week, this morning was Angelina Jolie virtue signalling herself to a political run.
Yesterday was that woman who set up Lastminute.com so it figures she'd book John, afterall she created a tech start-up that fucked the UK economy in the dot.com crash. BTW, she also claimed to be "almost a vegan", and therefore mostly a moron.

I don't think you even need to develop anything. You just take one of those chainguns they use as missile defence on big warships and adjust the radar parameters a little. I don't think there's many drones that stand up too well to a metric ton of steel whistling past their neighbourhood every minute.

You could also just launch nets into the swarm. They will likely not be able to carry sensors descrete enough to detect & avoid something like that. And that's assuming they just don't drive the radio-frequency equivalent of a white-noise machine and broadcast it into the swarm; you don't have to take control or intercept communications, just drown them out in so much noise the drones lose connection and either wander lost or shutdown and land. (You could try to use a stronger, non-FCC compliant transmitter, but I'll cover that below)
To the surprise of no one, John is doing a very bad job of getting his proposed point across.
He's trying to say the wall as physical security against terrorists & drug runners is rendered moot by drones. He's wrong, of course. Drones have very short run times; most are 30 minutes or less. The longer the run time, the more expensive the drone - this is important because the point John is ineffectively trying to parrot is that you just unleash a deluge of drones, and even if Border Patrol can respond in time, it doesn't matter if you lose 90% of them. You still get your Cocaine or Anthrax across.
Let's start with point zero: there is no way you get an autonomous drone across, unless its completely dumb and just running pre-scripted actions, maybe running some altimeter/compass combo to try some simple autopilot replication. No drone is going to be able to fly and have enough computational horsepower to do computer vision.
First with a drone you get to pick: Speed or Distance. Racing drones can get up to speeds of over 100MPH (in good conditions), but they have incredibly short run times. If you want more endurance, your drone is going to run very slow, even slower with cargo. Even if you go slow, your distance will be short. This means you're going to need to launch and recover within at most a couple miles of the border. This will give law enforcement good odds of following the drone to its destination, especially if they're ready. It will also give them a chance to say fuck stopping the drones, letting them land, and then bust arresting whoever shows up to collect them.
Second, this plan forgets that government agents can just wash the border in loud, random radio transmissions. Unlike civies, who are limited to (iirc) 1W of transmission power. The government has no limit, and could just jam the frequency, making so the drones can't be controlled. And if anyone tries to use a more powerful transmitter, that will just make it easier for the controller to be located.
so the tl;dr here is it would be a very expensive undertaking with high odds of the sender, the receiver, or both, getting busted.
The wall will stop random foot traffic cross-border foot traffic, and drones aren't going to be an effective bypass. Or I should say wouldn't be one for long.

I actually like Farnham's Freehold, but it far outstrips even Starship Stormtroopers as a paean to near fascism. It's still an entertaining and underrated novel. Not that I think Heinlein was an actual fascist, and in actuality, he was a veteran of the war against fascism, but he certainly inclined toward authoritarianism in general. Most of his alleged racism is bullshit.
