What? It would cost more to convert an existing car than to build a brand new one. Besides which, it's not like cars are exactly long lived. It was less than 20 years from the time when we banned new cars from requiring lead enriched fuel to the time when the only cars still on the road that needed leaded petrol were collectors items in the hands of hobbyists.

When the technology is ready, I'm sure the manufacture of new internal combustion cars will be banned and the switchover will be as rapid. It's just not ready at the moment.

The brand new Porsche is a valid midlife crisis car. Actually fixing up a true classic car like a 60s Aston Martin or a MG would maybe be a classy midlife crisis approach.

Buying an old beater and tricking it out with fake Bond gadgets is pretty pathetic though. When I was in the 16 y/o age range and my friends and I got ahold of our first shitty hand me down cars, we did the nerdy spy shit too. One guy was into cop gear and had a beat up old caprice classic with a police scanner and a spotlight. I had a tail light cutoff switch and a crazy air horn and some other bullshit switches I set up. One guy had some of those model rockets that shot out of a tube under his light pick-up truck which was as impressive as it was idiotic.


The point being: we did this, and thought it was cool when we were litterally still children. We quickly grew out of it when we had to start paying for things like car repairs and eventually payments for newer cars out of our own pockets — something John doesn’t understand.

Wu has shown a lot of indications that at some point in the '90s he just stopped developing and hasn't been able to process new information since then.

He's never had a real job, never had to pay for things himself, and most likely never had friends that would call him on his bullshit.

He's living out some fucked up teenage neckbeard fantasy because, mentally, he's still a fucked up teenage neckbeard.

Cost like 20 bucks. I put 2 12inch JL subs in the trunk and replaced the stock deck with something I got from a pawn shop.

Still got hearing loss from it and it shook my car to hell. Yeah. I think I went from the spy stuff, to the audio stuff, to the custom fuel injection mapping "enhancement" chip for my '92 Jetta. At one point I even had some stupid car mounted Linux machine, that never fully worked right, that I would use to play MP3s and do dumb bullshit. I was an idiot though, so while I was fucking around with all that, the engine was burning oil to the point the calendars were clicking, and I would need to refill the coolant every few weeks. This kind of thing was common in the mid-west where I was from. As was tricking out a 15 year old car with a bunch of racing gear from Summit Racing. I went to school with kids who had custom exhausts and 5 point racing seats on improbably shitty cars. Not to power-level but I'm actually in the same age range as John. Just thinking about this stuff now is mentally exhausting and I'm not not talking about in a "hard work on a labor of love project with with a lot of payoff" way, but more in a "what the fuck was I doing wasting all that time and money way".

Did we ever find out what happened with John's new 2018 Cayman? A guy I work with actually got one of those recently (S model, with a lot of extras) and he tells me he is paying something on the order of $1200 a month for it... on a fucking lease mind you. That's before insurance etc. Now he's a young ambitious, hot shot, carefree guy who makes Frank level money and is pulling a lot of chicks with the whole image, so I can kind of see where he is coming from. She is quoting the question as if someone is asking her, and she answers, "no"... So she could be quoting it like the article is asking her that question and including the premise that way, but then she isn't refuting the sub-premise that it's okay that this one woman did it which she implied in the question. This leads me to believe that she understood the premise enough to phrase it in the question but didn't disagree with it. She only disagreed with the complete statement, hence the singular "no" without further qualification, which matches my original contention.
