Making lynching a Federal hate crime -- isn't that a solution looking for a problem? How many lynchings a year occur? When was the last one? I'm sure John can't tell us.

And another pertinent question: why are the three black members of the Senate spending their time making symbolic gestures instead of, you know, working on something that would actually help the black community?

Lynching isn’t a hate crime unless a mob of white people lynch a black man for being black. So why would you need legislation to make it a federal hate crime? When was the last time anyone was fucking lynched?
 
The last documented lynching (using the definition of **murder carried out by a vigilante group**, and not the politically motivated mischaracterization that refers to any instance of a white man killing a black man to be a lynching) was that of James Byrd, Jr. on June 7, 1998.

Byrd was dragged to death behind a truck in Jasper, Texas, by three white supremacist assholes.

That was over twenty years ago. The previous lynching to that one occurred in 1981, when Michael Donald was lynched in Alabama by several KKK members.

So yeah, it's obviously a huge epidemic we're dealing with here, what with two instances in almost four decades. Save us, John!!!
 
Wu seems to fundamentally misunderstand insurance, like most progressives of her caliber. It is not magic money that pours in when bad things happen. It protects the insured against certain unforseen costs.

The idea of gun owners paying insurance in case they decide to go postal and shoot up a school or something is flatly absurd. No insurance company would sign on to that kind of responsibility, and no one who intended to commit a crime with a firearm would bother with insurance.
