What you need to do, essentially, is match the mannerisms and mood of the person you're speaking to, but keep the lead the entire time while giving the impression that you're the one doing them a favor. You have to be supremely confident in yourself, and you need to be casual and friendly at the same time.
Above all though: you cannot act like you need this. It has to have an air of "hey man, I was just reaching out to see if you'd be interested, but if you aren't, it's your loss, I don't give a fuck".
You need to give the impression that you're doing them a favor by even offering. It's a confidence thing.
As best as I can tell, Warren is deeply neurotic, awkward, uncomfortable to be around, sensitive, and kind of damaged. His talking about "bursting into tears" over being questioned is kind of pathetic. He's a poor candidate for this kind of work.
Your friends aren't getting signatures because there's more of them. They're getting signatures because they're the kind of people who make people listen when they talk. People like them and want to hear what they have to say.
I honestly feel bad for the guy. He's going to be miserable doing this kind of work and facing constant failure, and after things go down, he'll be blamed for Wu's failure to hire proper help.
