Yes, he does. Most of his lies are exaggerations of the reality or John using intentionally vague language to give himself some wiggle room if someone calls him out. Note that of all the interviews he had over the last couple of years, I think there was only one or two where John felt brazen enough to say he graduated college and those could have just as easily been the writer inferring from John's ambiguous wording that he's a college graduate. It's whenever he attempts to add additional details (like naming his imaginary workers/significant others) or invents new lies out of the blue to feel special that he gets into trouble.

Make no mistake, John know his backstory very well. That's why he works extra hard to rewrite as much of it as he can.

It is still an open question, if Wu deliberately chose to run in District 8, because she knows that there is no chance in hell she could win against Lynch and that he probably won't even acknowledge her existence, since he is also a democrat. I don’t think John understands off-by-one errors in the sense of element count vs index errors. I’m pretty sure John doesn’t know what an array is. We are talking about someone who fumbled around with the command line utility to upload his game to Steam for three days and then took to Twitter to complain that they need a GUI and beg for help. He simply isn’t skilled enough of a programmer to understand and retell a simple programming joke.

The way he typed it as “one off” errors instead of off-by-one suggest to me that he though it was something else entirely. I think his interpretation is that it’s where you are doing a repritive thing several times in a row and and in one case you make an mistake and miss it.
