You know I hate to agree with Wu, but it does seem to me that no matter what flavour the government du jour is they all come out of their first security briefings pissing themselves and eager to vote for new draconian surveillance powers for the spooks.
Either the world is secretly pretty fucking scary and MI5 is daily saving us from nuclear armed jihadis hell bent on the destruction of the infidel way of life, or they have their rap for scaring the living shit out of elected officials down so pat that they get everything they ask for. Despite their acres of computing power and taps on every major service provider on the internet, it seems like the basic mathematics of modern key exchange and bulk encryption ciphers are pretty much solid. As long as you use a decent key size, the options for the men in black for trying to decipher it are pretty limited.
Seems to me like the only thing that the security services have in their favour is that terrorists on the whole are really fucking stupid. They know full well that strong encryption is a fact of life, but what they really want to stop is strong encryption being provided to people just by downloading some shit on their phone with one tap. We really do have to fight for our rights to actually have some fucking privacy, because otherwise we'll lose it for no better reason than because some jerkoff at the CIA is used to reading everything ISIS is planning in plaintext SMS form.
