butting in but crap, I liked the vampire thing, esp the orthoganal epilepsy thing for lack of a better term. Not that it was some grand epiphany or anything, but a fun way to slip in the limit and the cross thing
I thought it was a fun stand in for a form of sociopathy which made for that type of outlier they were sending .
...
I never put the marine biologist thing together, but makes sens, Clarke was a big scuba diver and Meeting with Medusa is just a thinly skinned over scuba dive. The whole vampire as vampire thing I just take a window dressing. I mean I guess there the whole superstitious porphyria misidentification part as being an outsider. The crucifix part was funny.
I don't pay too much mind to little fetishes or pet themes in hard SF, the concept is really the show - it's what I think separates SF/hard SF from "literature" . It's about the concept and half the time I think it's probably editors needing plot (like the terrorists in R with Rama, or even the whole HAL thing to make 2001 feature length) . The recurring device thing lot of times in SF there are these wind-ups to a main work like short , novella, THEN novel - Ender's game and The Sentinel and The Bicentennial Man just as example. so I think of them more of 'verse extensions in that
It's unlike, say Benjanun Sriduangkaew, who TRIES to be literary and inexorably muddles the concept with the literary devices...it's just lesbian lesbian lesbian, there isn't any exploration of the alien (concept, environment, character or whatever) it's hjust "I'm a Lez" self celebration. It's gay chick lit, not SF
for me it's "it was a good concept.." is where SF lives, the but is a lot of times just a matter of taste.
I'll have to look the the whole vamp thing being a parasite encountering a race that sees conciousness as a parasite though - that's an interesting angle

love or hate the vampire angle, I can't say I'd respect anyone who didn't think
the 'see you at heat death' probe monologue and sperm-and-egg poem were awesome

Roe v Wade? Haven't heard of that Capcom crossover before.

Haha why are all our political enemies so insane John? Can't they be logical like us?

Never heard of this dumb book from a English BA but after looking it up I noticed that it posits that someone prone to black and white thinking (I assume what John is referring to here with rigid thinking which is a different psychological concept) is a Republican rather than a Democrat as the latter understand the nuances of the world instead. If only we had someone who displays black and white thinking regularly who might have interned for, say, Trent Lott we could ask about this theory...

Considering we've seen the extent of your skill, John, it's probably for the best that you never take your multiple luxury cars on the road.

didn't John talk about putting lap timers in his car?
so no instruments...Even Don Garlits was notable for dragging with "only" an oil pressure gauge

interesting to note that John's car has only a gearbox and his skill
no throttle, no brakes, so suspension, no steering, no wonder that piece of shit caught on fire

but he does have a point...screens are only for the unskilled..those newb Le Mans "drivers"

Hint John : you don't stare at your instruments, that's why the old school trcik is to rotate your instruments pins up.
and you do know why people used hood tachs...right?

Just a reminder: Roe V. Wade was still unchallenged when John's mother was pregnant with him, and look at where we are now. So clearly it was imperfect at preventing incidents like John Walker Flynt.

Off topic, but Blindsight was a solid concept but kind of a piece of shit from the moment he tried to introduce vampires. Plus from his previous series I knew more about the dude's fetishes than I ever wanted to, and they were poking out in that one too if you had read his previous work and knew what to look for. Like Doctorow and his Cougar fetish.
I don't know what its competition was. But I guess as long as it broke the spell.
That was 2007 Vernor Vinge won that year for Rainbow's End which itself was his extension of fetish from Fast TImes at Fairmont High
They all have their fetishes, be it positronic brains, human subspecies or A/R ubiquity
I don't worry too much about recurring themes or archetypes and those sorts fo thing as there's a lot of worldbuilding in scifi and I find the revisitation part of either the refinement or exploration of that.
Orson Scott Card (oh, no that terrible person) opined science fiction was always lousy, but it felt new. I think the point there is that it's not "good writing" when looked at as literature, because it's not traditional lit - the function is different, often antitehtical to lit, and the form can be somewhat different.
In scifi I often prefer the shorts (the above Fast Times vs Rainbow's) get in, make the point, get out

That being said, I enjoyed Blindsight, but the structure reminded me of Cryptonomicon while there is a central plot, it is also an armature to hang little technical essays written in pseudo-literary form. That's not a criticism, itself, but an analysis of form.

In some ways I find scifi like patents. specifically (and "legalese" in general) - from a prose perspective, rules of style and form are trashed -- hell a claim is basically one big long run-on sentence -- but that's because the serve a different purpose and use different guidelines to fulfill their function.

grrrr I'm still steaming MAD! FUCK YOU house nigg,er Justice Thomas for having the audacity to regulate John's mangina.

"I'll be talking about this and the end of Roe.."

Why?
You have no legal training - you aren't qualified from a legal perspective
you never had the ability to get pregnant - you can't speak to it from a lived experience as we women
you aren't out as trans - so you can't talk about how it effect "us trannies"
you have never held an elected position - so you can't talk about it as a political functionary

just stick to your lane and talk about addiction to drugs and social media
