John's relationship with Frank is more like a frat house friendship than faggot marriage. Makes me wonder if that's what Frank wanted after his divorce, just some one to pal around with and subtly control.

How many dudes want to chop their friends' cocks off?

I commented on this waaaay back in the dim and distant past, back when Wu's steam profile was public. Wu has playing some absurd number of hours of Civ 5, but remarkably has never, ever completed a game on anything other than Settler difficulty. For the uninitiated, Civ has 7 difficulties, Settler being the lowest and Deity the highest, the default being Prince.

Civ's AI is bullshit. The computer can't play worth a damn, but the difficulty setting denote just how much the AI cheats, or is handicapped. On Prince difficulty, it's almost impossible to lose the game. Basically you have to spawn right next to Atilla and be seen to be an easy target. The AI won't ever declare war if you have a military score of something like the 75th percentile in the world, and Prince handicaps the AI with a unit hardcap. Prince is a fine difficulty for learning the mechanics, but if you really want to play the game you need to at least bump it up to King.

That's the default difficulty. On the difficulty Wu plays, the AI basically isn't allowed in the game. I don't think they can really ever make war on you, you'd have to seriously contrive the situation where they could. And if they did, you could beat them back with like 1 archer or something. So Wu waxing lyrical about her Civ playstyle is absolutely meaningless. She's not really playing the game to begin with.
Long time lurker here, this troon having the gall to talk about Civ without knowing shit about it made me so unreasonably angry that I just had to make an account.

As said previously, the AI in civ is utter garbage, even at higher difficulty settings. Basically, single player civ is an arcade game where the AI's goal is to make you feel like you're playing a strategy game (you're not). The ai is completely passive on any difficulty lower than king and will just let you live and win the game even if you never built any military.
But it really says a lot about Wu's politics: he's expecting everyone to just play nice and doesn't even understand that, when you have no way of enforcing your boundaries, people just take your stuff, which incidentally is what happens in higher difficulty settings or in multiplayer. Really puts a bright spot on why is it that champagne socialists are the main voting block of modern left wing politics: they lived their whole life so far away from any conflict or hardship that they just can't fathom people not just going along and agreeing with them. Of course everything would be better if we could afford not spending a dime on the military but that's just not how the world works. Weakness is not a virtue.

I would love to play John in Civ. Bet I could make him rage quit in under 60 turns.
LOLOL. He'd screech at Frank to do something, then feverishly look for the Pay To Win options, before giving up and rage quitting while reeeeing about mansplaining.

Then he'd post on Twitter about how he recently schooled a gamergater in Civ so hard that the Nazi rapist renounced his evil ways and declared Brianna as the Most Beautiful Cis Woman In The World.

I bet he even turns off Barbarians, if that's an option in V.

With an attitude like john is showing in that twitter post i'd love to see him play a long term game of space empires 4. His habit of trying to be peaceful and create treaties would come back to bite him in the ass before long. He'd find himself creating military defense treaties and alliances and slowly peacefully expanding his borders.....and then suddenly the AI empires would see he is becoming a threat to him simply by having become too large and too technologically advanced in some areas and suddenly break those treaties and turn on him without warning in self defense. If he didn't put some decent research into advanced ship sizes, weapons, shields and such, and have a decent sized fleet even for self defense purposes he'd get his ass handed to him very quickly

That said, if you haven't played that one I highly recommend it. 3 and 4 were the best in the series, 5 had some good ideas but is a badly optimized mess, even if it did add a few things i'd have liked to have in 4. Anyways its on steam and gog and you can pick it up for like $2.50 during major sales like christmas and such. Its definitely worth a buy if you like 4X games

The original Civ -- I don't remember if it made it into II or III, and I've never encountered in IV, where I stopped with the series -- had a great mechanic for fucking with someone playing on low difficulties and vastly outstripping their rivals. Occasionally a random city in a rival civ would "admire" you, then revolt and join your empire. You'd be stuck with some backwards-ass city deep in enemy territory, and most leaders would send everything they had against it to put down the rebellion, bogging you down with a war whether you wanted it or not.

>"Visibility" is not inherently a positive for a marginalized group."

He's so close to being right. Maybe the reason why " Republicans making the dehumanization of transgender people an highly successful electoral issue" is because trannies are repulsive deviants who can't behave themselves, giving the transphobes more ammo.

I never understand the point of it. Is it to deflect in case people track down her parents and ask what happened to her brother John?
John wants to obscure his past to make it harder for people to make the connection between Brianna Wu and John Flynt.

It's also a sob story to be used as a shield and for pity points. Just like being surrounded by KKK at school, growing up poor, disowned for being a disgusting bisexual, being homeless and living in his car, driven from his home by rape threats, etc. Poor John has just had it so rough. But he's a champ, he overcomes.

John's "I was born a poor black child, and remember the days sitting on the porch singing and dancing in Mississippi" is one of my favorite aspects of his persona. I lived in Hattiesburg for a little while; it's not close the delta. It's a sleepy little college town that's about as liberal as you can get for Mississippi. The public schools in the area are consistently ranked as some of the best in the state and they sure as hell aren't a series of rusted trailers. No idea what the curriculum they taught was, but I'd be surprised if it was a bunch of "whiteys good, darkies bad" and phrenology. Not that it really needs repeating, but as usual, John is utterly full of shit.
