My younger brother and his best friend put some money together bought an actual 'classic' car (late 60s) that was basically good for nothing but scrap. They've been working on it for about a year now and have made a great deal of progress. Not once have they posted anything about in on social media, because to them it's about bonding over a difficult but productive project, shooting the shit and learning some really good life skills along the way.

I bring this up because it's an example of how normal human beings think and work regarding hobbies etc. Most people see something they want to do and get on with it if they're in a position to do so: They're not in it for the asspats, to show off or to be able to lord it over everyone by claiming fake expertise, but for the value and pleasure of the project in itself.

Wu, of course, views everything completely the other way around.

John will never succeed at the project. He'll just fuck it up while boasting about it on Twitter, then later give up and quietly take it to a garage to overpay to fix the shit he fucked up.

Considering the price of that paint at retail price and that you have no recourse if you fuck up the job yourself, it strikes me as a really dumb way to spend money, even if you weren't already wasting your time. John wasting time doesn't really matter since he has nothing but time.

The mechanics will double or even triple charge him. Mechanics and other tradesman love overcharging hipster cretins like John because it's both payback for being sneered at and they never see it coming because they're stupid.

Vehicle restoration implies more than getting a paint job and a new shift knob. Maybe if she replaced something that had a mechanical impact on the function of the car, I'd buy it, but she hasn't so much as changed a gasket. I'd bet money that even the simplest things to fix on that car are fucked, like brake pads, valve cover gaskets, etc.
