He's very childlike when it comes to his plans and schemes. He's like someone cheating on a book report and thinking he got away with it because he got a C, but the reason he got a C even though he obviously didn't read the book closely, or at all, was because he actually turned in a page of something and the standards aren't that high in 3rd grade.

Some clarification about this bit of John Flynt lore - he didn't live with his actual aunt.

In that LiveJournal entry, dated January 2, 2008, he says, "Right now is the far more exausting part of my end-year trek. I traveled with my aunt, who I live with, down to Arizona to see her father. He's just been diagnosed with a very serious illness, and she's trying to spend some time with him and make her peace."

The first red flag is John doesn't refer to the father of his "aunt" as his grandfather.

John's mother has no siblings, and her father, John William Walker, never lived in Arizona.

"Connie" was transgender and died on June 23, 2007, so obviously isn't the "aunt" in question since the drive to Arizona was months later. His birth name was Robert Alexander Place. He was a naval veteran, mechanic, and father of two daughters. "We miss you, Connie" is even inscribed on the gravestone that's in his birth name.

His friends set up a small memorial page and mentioned that Connie/Robert took in other people who were transitioning, so that's probably how John got housing and perhaps lived with "aunts" in Colorado.

It was at this point in your post I thought "the aunt is an old troon he met on the internet!" - reading further it certainly seems like it. That's some fantastic digging by the way.
Someone's son escaping to shack up with troons from the internet isn't that popular among parents and it causes some friction, maybe he is slightly disowned in some capacity?

John has apparently neither read the book nor seen the film, because he completely misstates the plot, probably because he doesn't understand it. Nobody is punished, as the court-martial ends in an acquittal after Queeg is destroyed on the stand. However, the lawyer who won the case throws a wet blanket on the celebration by calling out the mutineers as petty, spiteful cowards, and states that he regrets that he was forced to destroy an honorable, if troubled man.

This denouement comes as a slap in the face to the audience of sorts, as you have been probably sympathetic to these men up until this point, and glad to see Queeg get its comeuppance, and forces the audience not just to reevaluate the actions that led to this ending, but to themselves as well.

I don't know why John would even mention this. Perhaps he is parroting someone else. It's particularly ridiculous since much of the movie takes place on the upper deck, including the iconic scene of throwing Queeg's potted palm tree overboard.
 
Apparently John was wheeled out on the UK's BBC Radio 4 'Today' show this morning, talking about Google and Huawei. Someone who doesn't know John from the next pretentious pleb told me about it, said John obviously had no clue what he was talking about, and wondered why some random guy with a weird voice who isn't involved with the google/huawei story in any way was invited to speak on it.

I guess the interview might be available on the BBC Radio 4 website if anyone wants a laugh.

Fantastic work here. I think the "aunt" thing went unquestioned for so long because everyone assumed only family would put up with John Flynt.
It's interesting that he lived with at least two "aunts". I wonder just how many he burned through before finding Frank.

Well, he's definitely disowned at this point, but now I wonder just how that final split went down. I wonder if after peeling John off the pavement of Washington DC, Dr. Joel said something unspeakably rude like "Get a job", and John said "No way, I'm running away to join the circus ".

If by "resisted hacking attempts" you mean the precise cipher remained obscure, then sure. If by "resisted hacking attempts" you mean actually stopped people from getting the plaintext of the ROM. then I guess the wikipedia page disagrees.
 
You can always tell when someone fake-reads The Caine Mutiny when they think Queeg is the villain of the story. It's actually Keefer. Queeg was more a tragic downfall, a good man placed out of his depth who spiraled due to his self-doubts and social isolation. Wu would know this if Wu had read the book but we all know that any familiarity is Wu hearing a third-hand reference to Captain Queeg. I'd bet she thinks it's Crimson Tide.
