It amazes me that no matter what the circumstances or situation are, Flu never fails to find the most expensive and time-consuming option (and not necessarily the one that returns the best results, either!)

But as you observe, if this is being done behind the insurance company's back, when if Flu wasn't at fault the supposed insurance should cover any and all damage fees, then it does raise the question of why Flu is paying for something they effectively claim they should be getting for free.

When you factor in the derelict Honda, the "restoration" of the TT, and everything that you know is going to be involved with this latest car this winter, you could probably lease a brand new Cayman and come out ahead financially. A quick look online suggests that would run someone about 6k down and just north of $700/month on a 3 year lease.

Either way, there is no chance that a Porsche of any kind, in John's hands, will fare very well. You know he is going to wreck this thing into something at least once more this winter. Also, It is extremely unlikely that John, despite now being an "expert mechanic", will do even the most basic maintenance required to keep this thing going. In a few months, that check engine light will be the least of his worries. It's probably going to be a rattling, rickety mess with bent up wheels, burned up clutch, engine damage, a ruined electrical system and a disgusting nicotine coated interior.

Alternative possibility: Wu is the kind of person who will insist on standing next to the mechanic and giving 'suggestions' on how to do his job while inserting meaningless technobabble into the situation and taking photos of everything.

This is the kind of person who immediately gets whatever they want done moved to the absolute back of the queue immediately. Shit where the dude already figured out how to fix it and that it would take a minute to do it gets turned into a month long wait because fuck you.
 
I wonder if Wu has ever heard of Grassroots Campaigns or similar. The "activist" was probably a twentysomething on a commission based canvass. Nobody is getting paid to walk around Boston in the dead of winter asking to "vote for clean energy" unless they are soliciting donations directly. This isn't a pure political canvass, not this time of year.

There was a failed ballot initiative for 2018 that was going to require the state to allocate a certain percentage of its total electricity generation to renewables and it's possible that the "activist" was getting paid to try and get it on the ballot for 2019 but that seems a helluva stretch. It's not canvassing season and it's not ballot signature season either.

Maybe she just made the whole damn thing up.

The real question is just how much Flu thinks they can do vs how much they won't do. I mean, they claim to be a game developer when in truth they barely could use Maya and threw money at a bunch of entry-level people to build a shit game for them. Meanwhile, they're such a lazy pillock that they don't even clean up after themselves.
