Flynt is a liar and shit stirrer. He rarely posts his actual opinions, he just posts contrarian shit so people will pay attention to him. Negative attention is still attention after all.
Honestly, I think there's something to this. I don't think Flynt is some kind of tragic head case, I think he's your standard hipster douchebag who just happened to have access to a fuckload of cash. He's a contrarian for the sake of itself, because people often forget that a controversial and uncommon opinion is not necessarily an intelligent one.
Take the whole FF XIII issue. No one who played the game is going to realistically defend it; it was a linear, pretentious, convoluted affair that desperately tried to be deeper than it was. However, it had one key element that appeals to John:
It was so dense, so completely overdone, that it gave the appearance of actual depth. The plot was a mess of made up terms and ideas that you had to keep straight in order to have any clue as to what the fuck was happening. The fal'Cie makes some L'Cie, and then they have to go complete the special magic quest because they're cursed, and there's some giant monster called Ragnarok and the whole thing is such an enormous fucking mess that I had to open the wiki to remember enough of the lore to write this.
John doesn't like smart games. He likes games that make him feel smart. He sees a game that's deliberately obtuse and decides it's some kind of visionary artistic work, when it's actually a pretty apt example of why auteur projects need to be a carefully managed thing.
Which is rather appropriate, really.
