British googling EU after voting on it

smdh
Actually I'm not surprised by that. Most people aren't aware of things like this except in the most superficial ways.

Besides all the young folk that decided to stay never knew a Great Britain that wasn't part of the EU. And that right there ought to speak loads that they don't actually know what the EU is all about.

The internet is producing some top-quality maymays on this incident:

Hey, American Idiot here. Can someone tell me what the Pros and Cons are for staying in/staying out of the EU. And what makes people who want to remain particularly lolzy?

The general idea is that if we all band together into a bigger entity, we'll be stronger, economically and militarily. A lot of Eurocrats use language that makes it clear they see themselves in direct competition with America -- comparing population sizes to the US, speaking of a "united states of Europe." This was especially true in the optimistic early days. Also, Europe managed to brand itself as cool and globalization as "the right side of history" (ugh, that phrase).

But the European government that evolved from this was far away and untouchable and corrupt and got a taste for regulating every inch of everything. Leavers believe they got far less in benefits than they gave in contributions. There was already conflict that arose from migration of EU citizens into the UK (a thing that the UK wasn't allowed to restrict in any way) and then the migrants from outside began to come.

You can call it racism and xenophobia if you want, but the truth is Britain is a small island and it's full up. Immigration in the last ten years has been enormous and everything is feeling the strain: the health system, schools, infrastructure. Huge housing estates are going up all over what were green fields. Most of the people coming in are coming as dependents. They don't have skills to make a positive contribution in a first world society. Also, many of them are hostile as hell if not actual criminals.

I'm still loving the knots they're twisting themselves in over the fact that democracy has been HIJACKED by the COMMON VOTER!!!

And what, prey tell, would have been their reaction had they won, and the brexit boards had been full of people lamenting "it's too bad the public doesn't know what's good for it" ?

If you said some version of "Shut up, racist, the PEOPLE have spoken and you LOST" please claim your fabulous* prize now.

*prize is not fabulous.

This. Also, they forced the Irish to a rerun of the Lisbon Treaty referendum because they gave the wrong answer (no) in the first place, stomped all over the Greek government for not instituting policies that were to Angela Merkel's liking. Then there was the BSE row, where the attitude of the EU was exemplified by the then Danish PM who said it was most important to him, personally, that the British were fucked like a whore on payday.

Also, the EU keeps bending the rules to expand its remit. The Greeks should not have been admitted and/or put into the €uro, but the rules were bent for them. The rules were also bent to admit Slovenia and Croatia to the EU as well. But who is paying for these less well developed nations to be dragged up to Anglo-Franco-German standards? That's right, us. Meanwhile, we keep having to borrow money to keep everything ticking over. No thanks.

Actually, I don't know anyone with half a brain who'd be shaken or surprised that the stock markets of the world hiccuped over this..... which is why the tumblr tards freaking out over a 2% downturn that will be earned back in a few months anyway are a sight to behold..... they'll look for ANY raincloud in this sky.

Both sides have their points, too bad everything was reduced to "lolIslam". Is the next generation that is going to see the results of the incompetence of the old and current one.

I'm afraid you are wrong, Islam was not used in the mainstream campaigns, migration mostly revolved around Polish and Eastern European migrants.

The only time Islam was brought up was rather tastelessly by the Leave campaign mere hours after the Orlando shootings, as well as on a poster that the Leave Campaign put up showing migrants in Slovenia.

Transgender rights activist Paris Lees was on BBC's Newsnight programme tonight, arguing with historian David Starkey about how older people should not be given the vote due to their age and that they were effectively 'going to die sooner than younger people'. When Starkey dared to argued back, he was branded an 'overprivileged white male' by Lees. Cue all the In supporters coming to Lees' rescue:

Lol these idiots are actually trying to petition to have another referendum. Do these slacktivists know how to do anything besides bitch when they don't get their way? Also I find it highly unlikely that either side would get above 60%. It will always be a close call.

I said this in the UK referendum thread, but Germany deserves some kind of lifetime achievement award for fucking the European continent up for the third time in a century.

They're just giving back what the rest of European continent did to them in the 30 years war.

Thanks for the aclaration.

(lol at how fast you were rated as Islamic Content just because...)

Maybe I missed it, but, did anyone in that prime, hip, progressive "Stay" demographic actually go out and vote? I see a lot of oh-woe-as-me, but not many people seem to be saying anything that indicates they were actually at a poll.......

And most places that allow referendums actually have built-in "timers" in that whatever issue you called it on, you can't call it again for a set period of time, usually several years. I'd be surprised if one isn't in play here, specifically to keep this kind of constant "do it again till I get a result I like" gameplaying from happening.

Really, so she supports the marginalisation of old people, who are already disprivileged by dint of their age (there's a reason that age discrimination regulations are a thing) and suffer structural oppression and microaggressions out the wazoo (have you ever heard someone saying they had a senior moment? Well then.)

Paris Lees, CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE.

Also, David Starkey is gay, so you were straightsplaining him.

DOUBLE CHECK YOUR PRIVILEGE.

Teenage bitching is now being endorsed by actual newspapers (well, The Guardian)

Oh for fuck's sake. This sort of thing really gets right up my nose.

When I was 16 years old, I was a fucking idiot. I thought I knew everything but in reality, I knew bugger all. In fact, if I met me aged 16, I'd punch myself in the face and tell me to go get a clue.

Is Alan Rubbisher really that desperate for clicks?
