Update on my bot hunting: I identified a bot ring of approximately 50,000 accounts. This ring is a sophisticated bot swarm that uses likes, reposts, and replies to signal boost posts and get them into the Discover feed. Bot operators use a tool (listifications.app) to identify when they've been spotted. Sometimes they'll let their bots respond to those events with rude messages or threats!
When I spot a suspicious account I ask myself, "Who would follow such an obviously inauthentic account?" So I run a tool that tests that account's followers. Sometimes that's 100k accounts being tested! What I found after only testing about 20 accounts is that I've already seen almost all of the followers on every new account I test, meaning these followers all belong to the same bot swarm.
Approximately 8% of the swarm, or 4000 accounts, demonstrate a pattern of very high volume posting. Further testing would reveal how much of the swarm exists as medium-volume posting, and all of them act as signal boosting to make posts more visible. Probably the most suspicious signal is the extreme number of replies that boosted posts get. Large outlets with lots of followers might get 5-40 replies, but these astroturfed posts regularly see 200 or more. For example example EFF.org: 165k followers, but only one post in the last week has more than 10 replies, and that one post has 21.
The reply pattern seems to double as insulation: These accounts are not monitored. Curating replies and blocking people calling out the bullshit or trolls is too difficult for bots to manage so they drown it out in pure noise.
If we guestimate these 4000 accounts as making 20 posts per day, that means 80,000 posts per day are fake. There are likely others.
https://bsky.jazco.dev/stats says Bluesky sees about 3.3 million posts per day or about 2.4% of all posts are due to the high volume actors within this bot ring. The percentage is much higher because the stats include replies and that's where the medium and low volume bots step in to add more noise.
The content of these posts? Anti-GOP propaganda: Anti-Trump, anti-MAGA, anti-ICE, "resist", or whatever comes across the desk of the bot swarm owner. What is especially notable is that the messaging is entirely negative: It's never about what can or should be done, or what positives democrats have done. Just "this sucks, be angry" or "resist", but never any call to action or support for anything positive. The bot swarm is sophisticated and some profiles are 80% dog pictures and 20% politics. Many are 100% politics. Images with text are very common. Alt text is NEVER used.
All of these stats so far have been using a very conservative metric for identifying bots. Even having blocked all of the high volume posters mentioned, I still regularly encounter the medium volume members in my Discover feed.
So there's my analysis of Bluesky traffic. I hope to apply these lessons to Kiwifarms threads soon. I'm looking at you, USPG2.
