Once you play for about half a year you enter the phase where you can start investing in niche students, once you play for about a year you can start pulling for niche students if they fill specific gaps in your roster. Failing at some bosses and having to do them below recommended level is absolutely fine as a beginner that's less than a year in because you still don't have a roster deep enough and enough materials to focus on the niche students. Like I've mentioned in my previous post, while pulling for the generally considered "good" and high-tier students, I managed to get spooked by units like Satsuki to dumpster Geburah, and Mina+NY Haruka to dumpster Greg. On the other hand, the next boss Goz is gonna be a nightmare for me due to the lack of repos+multi shielders in my roster so I'll settle on doing it on a lesser difficulty.Still doing bosses on hardcore. I could maybe do this on extreme if i upgrade, level up and borrow some students but i rather hold off on that for now.
In short, the best thing you can do is to look at your own roster, identify what you have, then look up guides on upcoming bosses. If you lack niche students that can interact with his mechanics, then you can settle on doing them on a lower difficulty. If you do have them, you can invest in those students and get a good clear for that particular boss. In my own example I invested heavily in my Satsuki and Mashiro in order to do well in Geburah and I also got a bunch of credits from people borrowing them (mostly Satsuki tho). After I play for a longer time, I'll be able to do that for more and more bosses.
