Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos will step down as head of the company, according to a Tuesday Amazon press release. Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web Services is expected to replace Bezos as CEO of the company.

Bezos's announcement came as Amazon announced financials for the fourth quarter of 2020, which saw net sales increase 44 percent to $125.6 billion as opposed to $87.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019. In a Tuesday statement, Bezos said it was the "optimal time" for the leadership change.

"If you do it right, a few years after a surprising invention, the new thing has become normal," Bezos said. "People yawn. That yawn is the greatest compliment an inventor can receive. When you look at our financial results, what you're actually seeing are the long-run cumulative results of invention. Right now I see Amazon at its most inventive ever, making it an optimal time for this transition."

Bezos is expected to transition to the executive chair position in the company. Newsweek reached out to Amazon for further comment.

How would this take a target off his back? He's still the second richest man on Earth (Elon Musk apparently surpassed him recently).
By replacing the public face of Amazon with some person nobody's ever heard of, and hopefully (for him) before anyone who might be a problem realizes just how much damage was done during the pandemic, and how much of it Amazon is responsible for. It's not perfect, but he can only do so much to remove a target from his back.

Trump is out of office now, I suspect that journalists will feel no loyalty and be absolutely fine talking endlessly about how much damage Amazon caused once it becomes convenient to do so, now that their favorite punching bag is out of the way.

Perhaps I'm reading more into this than I should, but I think he knows what's coming. I may hate his guts but he's definitely smart, and more importantly he's canny.

As Bezos steps down, Amazon to get new Jewish CEO

Andy Jassy, a long-time Jewish Amazon executive and confidante of Jeff Bezos, will take the reins of the company as CEO later this year.

Bezos made the announcement Tuesday in a letter to his employees.

“Andy is well known inside the company and has been at Amazon almost as long as I have,” Bezos wrote. “He will be an outstanding leader, and he has my full confidence.”

Jassy, 53, is known for helping come up with the most profitable part of Amazon’s business model: cloud computing. The Wall Street Journal reported that in its most recent quarter, Amazon Web Services had “net sales of $12.7 billion with an operating income of $3.6 billion, more than half of the company’s overall operating income.” Companies as large as Uber and Netflix have used Amazon’s cloud infrastructure to build their businesses.

The Harvard Business School graduate has worked at Amazon since 1997, just three years after its launch. His various roles have included serving in the music and CD sales division before rising to become Bezos’s “shadow” — akin to a chief of staff, according to one of Bezos’ former business partners.

Jassy grew up in a Jewish family in suburban Scarsdale, New York. He married his wife, Elena Caplan, in a Jewish ceremony in California in 1997. At the time, her father was president of what was then called the Jewish Television Network.

He's definitely up to something.

There have been rumblings of Amazon unionization, anti-trust action, and an Investigation on how much counterfeit shit Amazon is knowingly selling.

If any of those are true, we could be in for an interesting time.

But my money is on him getting into politics, either directly or being a Soros-level financial backer...
