Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos will step down as head of the company, according to a Tuesday Amazon press release. Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon Web Services is expected to replace Bezos as CEO of the company.

Bezos's announcement came as Amazon announced financials for the fourth quarter of 2020, which saw net sales increase 44 percent to $125.6 billion as opposed to $87.4 billion in the fourth quarter of 2019. In a Tuesday statement, Bezos said it was the "optimal time" for the leadership change.

"If you do it right, a few years after a surprising invention, the new thing has become normal," Bezos said. "People yawn. That yawn is the greatest compliment an inventor can receive. When you look at our financial results, what you're actually seeing are the long-run cumulative results of invention. Right now I see Amazon at its most inventive ever, making it an optimal time for this transition."

Bezos is expected to transition to the executive chair position in the company. Newsweek reached out to Amazon for further comment.

I wonder if he's been offered a position in Biden's cabinet?

I can't think of any other reason why he'd step down.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is to step down as chief executive of the e-commerce giant that he founded in his garage nearly 30 years ago.

He will become executive chairman, a move he said would give him "time and energy" to focus on his other ventures.

Mr Bezos, the world's richest man, will be replaced by Andy Jassy, who currently leads Amazon's cloud computing business.

The change will take place in the second half of 2021, the company said.

"As Exec Chair I will stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions," he said in an letter to Amazon staff on Tuesday,

"I've never had more energy, and this isn't about retiring. I'm super passionate about the impact I think these organizations can have."

Probably not since he's staying as the chairman. This is the same move that Bill Gates made when he stepped down as Microsoft CEO.

Interesting that Jassy is getting the CEO spot. He's the current head of AWS. This leads me to believe that Amazon is going to focus less on retail and more on AWS going forward, which is probably a smart move.

That's what my gut says... even if it's not made public.

Either that, or he thinks things will go downhill really fast and he wants to hide in his underground bunker on some private island somewhere.

It's not the most uncommon thing.

Executive chair is a way for him to still have oversight without managing the day-to-days of the company, and such maneuvers are pretty expected among megacorps. Larry Page, for example, is still a board member and controlling shareholder of Alphabet. Not a lot to scry from the move.
I'm sorry, what the fuck did he "invent"?
Amazon's supply lines in the US and Europe are genuinely things of marvel, even if they're loaded with pork and corrupt as hell. Brick & Mortar genuinely cannot compete against the ridiculously hyper-efficient supply and distribution behemoth this guy helped to cobble together. Ideally other companies would try to emulate that system, but it almost seems more likely that the government simply opens up its cushy favoritism that it grants to Amazon to others, should the company come under fire.

Ah, so he's joining the Chicken Neck Nelly Coaltion for Eugenics, Owning Nothing, and Being Happy™️.
Yeah, I was just looking at all the creepy "climate" programs, benign sounding science (eugenics) and gender-bender programs he's been donating money to.
Looking up these organizations he donated to, and they're all about the BLM movement, antifa, "gender equality".

He has already guaranteed the immortality of my nemesis, the Washington Shitpost. That alone has made me avoid buying on Amazon whenever possible.
