I actually worked with someone from the West Indies who spoke exactly like this. Imagine my horror having to go shopping with him one day for the company to buy some building material. The reason I got picked? Because the guy forgot his lunch and needed the van, and I was the only one allowed to drive the company van, so boss figured he'd kill two birds with one stone. Problem was I was never given a shopping list because I was not party to that conversation and boss had to be somewhere else, so he trusted the guy would know what he was looking for.

Big fucking mistake. We were at Home Depot for over an hour because nobody could understand half of what he said. From that point forward, it was agreed that I'd be given a shopping list anytime we needed material AND I traveled with someone who spoke proper English. Fucking shoot me.

Has this guy ever been told that his language is a problem? I really hate it when people don't at least try to learn some degree of useful English. I'm not saying we should leave them jobless. But don't give them positions where they need people to understand them until they can be understood.

Do people who speak pidgin understand English speakers? It sounds close enough that you should be able to work something out. But having the time to comprehend something written down is easier than listening to someone speak with an unfamiliar accent.

Probably. We had plenty of issues speaking with him. Frequently, we had to ask him to repeat himself a few times because he was nigh impossible to understand on a first time around. Eventually, he moved away because he girlfriend was starting school out of the region. We left amicably, so no hard feelings. He was a hard worker, but high maintenance.
