Honestly Fairy Tail. By itself, i don't think the concept is that bad, it's just a little cliché ; mages in guilds that go on bounty hunting missions here and there to get money, fighting each using their own set of unique skills. But the execution is GOD AWFUL ; shitty gimmicks, a constantly horny author, annoying characters, dating simulator syndrome and of course always that god damn POWER OF FRIENDSHIP. There is no consistency with powers, it's basically DBZ and there is little tension in a lot of fights because it will always end up with the protagonist getting back up at the last moment for no other reason that scenario said it.
While I do find the criticisms valid (I too think the same about Fairy Tail), please do not talk about popular series (read the OP as to why).

I present you the questionable "Tsubaki-chou Lonely Planet".

"Ohno Fumi is a poor 2nd year high school student. Because of her father's debts, she's kicked out of her own home and has to rely on her own connections to survive. Thus begins her life as a live-in housekeeper for a reclusive writer."

The art style isn't bad at all but OOF the whole premise is really questionable. She is 16 while he is 28 at the start of the manga.

Age-gap romance is always on a tightrope. The fact that authors fail to realise this, time and time again, is beyond me. The older partner is supposed to give power to the younger partner over the relationship to make things more balanced (the two parties cannot truly be equals until later in life but they still have to try) as they are by default an unequal pairing. The older has to always keep in mind what the younger person thinks/wants/desires/needs before they do anything.

IN THIS THOUGH, the older person has physical strength (he is a man), money, house, authority and she has little more than a name and the clothes on her back. The deck is so stacked against her that no casino would accept the results. REAL DICEY!

I don't know if it counts as unpopular(I guess it's keeping Comikey alive?) but Kengan Omega is one of the dumbest manga in an already dumb and outlandish genre. It has completely ceased to be entertaining or even funny enough to continue to hate read.

Basically, retarded writing, art that has rapidly degraded because the artist wants to draw hot babes and instead needs to draw mountains of muscle men and also is overdosing on really shit AI, no editor oversight and no end or actual plot direction in sight, numerous tournaments that are extremely boring and jarring narratively and visually(blurs everywhere and a focus on visually bland attack rushes) and two 3000 year old martial art gods who literally WOOOSH their hands and everyone drops and introducing the really dumb powerup of "principles"(straighten up your back and now your punches will create sonic booms, it's that easy)

It is a bit on the grey area where it is popular to get an anime but not popular enough for many to have read it even if they know of its existense. Looks like Baki but less fun/good/self-aware. Also, how does it compare to Asura? I had been hearing a lot about it only for it to disappear from public consiousness.

Speaking of, Cheat Slayer. Basically The Boys: isekai edition written by a guy who was mad that isekai sold better than his own work.

It ended getting canceled after one chapter due to the obvious problems, but it was destined to be a train wreck since the author basically just picked popular series he felt snubbed by. Hence, the characters being portrayed as super OP heroic figures that everybody loves but are secretly evil rapist monsters who never had to do anything hard in their lives when the Justice League they are not.
One of them is just a waitress. Kind of sad that we will never know how she'd be evil.
Parody stemming from bitterness/resentment/anger/envy or anything like that will not turn out like you think it will. The Masters of Spoofs are those that have an intimate understanding and love of the genres and conventions they parody. In stories like this, the hatred for the works and those that enjoy them is FELT ALL OVER!

Weird that you picked the middle-of-the-road banishment trope inversion as your first one (I've read up to chapter 20 of it). I think some of the ones that play it straight are really bad. Look for the key word "tsuihou sareta". In fact, there's so many that I can't even find the exact "support magician gets kicked out of A/S-rank party and then that party immediately goes to shit" manga that I'm looking for.
It was not my first. Just the one I felt I had the most to say due to how hard it dropped the ball.

Is This Hero For Real? is simply a worse version of FFF-Class Trashero from the same author, with the same main character, but tamed down and with the annoying "God(s) pestering the main character with notification boxes showing their pleasure/displeasure" trope seen in some manhwa.
Ripping off yourself is some real artistic incest!

I was disappointed that it got shitcanned and the mangaka apologized. It probably wouldn't be a problem outside of Japan:

There's a series with a similar premise that wasn't cancelled. Forgot what it's called.
Sustaining intense hatred is exhausting for everyone involved. Not healthy for the mind. Clearing his head, taking a deep breath and coming up with a story that makes him feel happy is better. Just turning recognisable characters into one-dimensional villains does nothing for anyone.

Ingoshima

What an absolute degenerate pile of nip shit. It started interesting: A group of students stranded on an island that belongs to a weird brutal cult and they have to escape. And then the creators decided to make porn out of it. There is rape, more rape, gay rape, gay rapists fighting with boners... It devolved into students getting raped on rape island. And all of the cult leaders are called Ingo for some reason. One of the worst manga I've ever read, if not the worst. Idk if the story progressed. I've stopped reading a long time ago.

-9000/10 can't recommend.

So not even manga like Escaflowne? Because that one in particular doesn't hold a candle to the anime.
I personally enjoyed the manga by Aki Katsu, I thought it was an interesting look into what could've been with the anime, though I do agree the changes ultimately made were for the better and it wouldn't have been beloved to this day had it still kept to the original ideas. (Although Hitomi being possessed by the spirit of Escaflowne to act as a second pilot was neat, and Dilandau being obsessed with Van's mother could've made for more interesting conflict between the two.) And given that the 2000 movie is also a different take on the same story, I think it's fascinating that Escaflowne has different retellings every single time.

Now admittedly, it's been over ten years now since I had last read it, and my copies are currently in storage. A reread is due.

Reminds me that while Ghost! (Eerie Queerie in English) wasn't toxic, it is still the most groan-inducing manga I've read that started with an interesting premise that I wouldn't have minded if it naturally leaned into the BL over time were it not for the creator just immediately indulging in dumbass cliché BL tropes before two volumes were even finished. I was wondering if perhaps Shiozu Shuri might've actually been a man writing a shoujo supernatural BL until volume three happened where one or two characters suddenly got turned into babies because woohoo magic shenanigans and the rest of the characters had to "hilariously" take care of them, and then I went "OF FUCKING COURSE" and it was just bad. The "helping ghosts rest in peace" stuff that kickstarted the manga and is why it got the title of Ghost! only to just "conveniently" forget is probably why it only got 20 chapters (although for some reason it was published from 1999 to 2004).

Oh yeah, the main uke is actually named Mitsuo Shiozu, so the author literally put in a genderbent self-insert into the story to live out her BL fantasies. Also this is the only manga of hers that's ever gotten published. I wonder why.

Also, how does it compare to Asura?
The common consensus is that Omega starts sucking once you hit chapter 50. I'd say it starts smelling with the Carlos fight and veers into "what the fuck is this?" once you get to the Misasa/Lu Tian fights. Then it just becomes retarded, but the funny kind of retarded up until say this latest tournament in which no ounce of fun can be had now.

A yaoi manga even fujoshits couldn't stomach because everything is as generic as sin even by yaoi manga standards. It's only really famous for having quite possibly some of the worst manga art I've ever seen.

I don't even know where to fucking start here

NGL I read all of it because I wanted to know how it was going to end.
Basically she is super responsible because of how she was raised ie her mother is dead and her father was a piece of shit who ended up with a huge debt and had to move to work, leaving her virtually homeless. She starts working as maid and basically fixes this dude's life. He ignores her at first and stays in his room while she does the work of a maid and cook. The time passes and they start getting closer and end up together, She helps him with his mommy issues and overall lack of social skills. But, you know, he's a full adult and she is SIXTEEN

The mangaka has another story with a big age gap, student x teacher, but it ends up better and it never happens.

Her current series is better, though, in this aspect. Two high school students (she has others in this settings but the most famous ones are the problematic ones) and the protagonist is a girl with short hair who is considered the school's prince. I am currently reading it and there are a few flaws here and there but the art is pretty.

Also, discussion about those manga would overshadow everything else as the fans and haters (both of which will make valid points and neither will back down) would turn this into a massive battleground. Plus, those either have dedicated threads or should get some. This thread is more about hidden turds, good premises with horrible executions, complete trash that no one who read it would want to publish it and/or advice for storytelling using those bad manga as exambles of what not to do. All in all, sacrifising discussion of popular manga for the sake of not causing flame wars that derail the thread is necessary.
That makes sense. Now that you mention it, it probably would turn into fanboy shitflinging. I like the idea of the thread and hopefully it takes off. :pinetar:

Thanks for understanding and for the well-wishing.

I am half convinced that the reason so many fujoshi go to Shonen manga to get their shipping fix is because of all the ugly art in Yaoi.

To be fair, that manga is almost twenty years old. Bl art has weirdly gotten better across the board. It's honestly pretty interesting looking at it from an art evolution point of view, styles have shifted a lot.

Recently, some have gone on to do seinen and shounen.

Reminder that the original Cardcaptor Sakura had unironic grooming in it and it took literal DECADES for the fandom to realize how fucked it was.
Pressing hard X on doubt, as all of the shit done in CCS in addition to grooming was getting spotted; as soon as the individual anime episodes finished their first broadcast on Japanese TV in the late 1990ies at the latest.

I did notice some improvement but still, overall, that is the genre with the ugliest men. On average and going by covers at least. Feel free to correct me.

Eh, beauty is in the eye of the beholder so I can't say for sure if what is there would count as good looking enough for your gander, at least from me I think it looks pretty good for a cover.

Is this the teacher/elementary student romance, or Clow Reed himself? There's a lot of weird relationship shit in it.

I wish that one Kiwi had been able to find that one compilation pointing out all the fucked up implications.

True. Again, I propably should not be talking about things I know little about and admitably I have no interest in the genre. However, everytime I was browsing the sites and noticed a manga with baddly drawn men, it was (usually) Yaoi. I did notice some improvement (again going by covers but covers are usually the best drawn part so...) but the fact that manga are scanned and added years after they were made confuses things.

As well as Sakura's parents, where they met when the mother was sixteen and the father was HER TEACHER?!
I think he was a teacher's assistant starting his first day, and at that point in time, 16 was the legal age to marry. I find their relationship waaaaay more wholesome than Ms. Kaho Mizuki (who is no older than 30 when she met Sakura) and Touya, who was just about to enter high school when they broke up.

Personally, I do not hate Age-gap romance on principle. I just hate it when it involves underage people and they do not give this issue the gravitas it deserves. Power dynamics are a thing. If you make it so that the underage is entirely subordinate to the older one and do not see an issue, this isn't a tightrope anymore, it is a thread about to be torn. From my experience, the older female x younger male romances do it right more often than their older male younger female counterparts. I wonder why is this the case (I am genuinely asking)? Teenage boys are on average stronger than an older woman so they will propably not be raped by their older partner. Plus, the ones I have read tent to give the age gap and the power dynamics the respect they deserve and try to keep things balanced even when dealing with a student x teacher pair or with a sexually active pair. My advice to authors that want to write such a romance is this: big age-gap, underage, student x teacher, master x subordinate, sexual relationship, dependant. Pick as few of those elements as you can. Less is more in this case.
