That video answered why Back 4 Blood just didn't feel right in ways I couldn't put my finger on. All of those death animations for the L4D zombies, wow. And that game came out 14 years ago!

I'll be honest, I actually haven't seen any gameplay of this after that disaster of a reveal trailer, and my god, a side-by-side comparison really does go to show just how much more impressive of a game L4D is by comparison. It's the little things, like the way zombies charge at you, to their dynamic death animations, to the facial expressions of the survivors, to Source Engine props scattered around the environment that make L4D feel more "real" despite being a much older title.

Also "no modding support" is code for "we want to sell skins and DLC, just like with Evolve."

Same. (Except I didn't bother to watch the trailer. Looks awful based on Crowbcat's vid.)

It's kinda shocking just how unpolished and amateurish Back 4 Blood is by comparison. Left 4 Dead is over thirteen years old by this point and it honestly trounces the former in almost every aspect. It feels much more like what a modern game should be and to this day, it and its sequel haven't been topped in what they do best.

What irks me in particular is how explosions have pretty much no impact to them. I haven't played too many modern games, but from the few I've played, a lot of devs seem to be good at making them look pretty, but they don't know how to actually make them FEEL like explosions.

I seem to recall a bunch of people complaining about Valve and Left 4 Dead 2 and how Turtle Rock were the real geniuses behind the original game. Seeing how many actual people from Turtle Rock worked on the game is pretty hilarious.

The situation reminds me of another hyped game from a studio with some respectable works under their belt. In fact, this is something like the video form of the following image, but worse, since this case is about a spiritual sequel.

(I wish I hadn't lost my long effortpost in the rollback when B4B was in beta. This fucking game was trash from the go.)

While we shit on the game, I really wanted it to be good, but you know comparing your product to a good and beloved title you have to fill a lot of big shoes. Too bad that the foot was too small and shoes too many.

I'n late to the "valve released l4d2 too soon!" Complaining but I just wanted to say: there was pushback, is just that it seemed small compared to what they sold on both console and pc.
Speaking of consoles, both L4D games sold really well on xbox 360 which had a caveat due to microsoft retarded policies: if you wanted to do content updates only the first one could be free and subsequent ones had to be paid. Maybe with free updates out of the question (for console at least) they must have figured out they were better off selling a new game than a paid update, besides even back then you had yearly releases of stuff like CoD and Valve wanted in on that.

Looking back, Valve efforts to become established in consoles was short lived, prior to L4D all of their games had been ported by third parties and afterwards they had small "experiments" like what they did with portal 2 and steam accounts on ps3 or trying to bring crossplay to CS:GO (which was ultimately dropped). They haven't bothered with consoles ever since.

boycott was so stupid we didn't get l4d3 which *could* attract people to demand 3rd sequels for other valve franchises

That ending where he changes the text "From the creators of Left 4 Dead" to "From the creators of Evolve." Fucking. BRUTAL. Absolute fucking annihilation. Turtle Rock is done. The only thing they can do is change their name or focus on phone games.
Back 4 Blood gacha when?

Also that modding part made me giggle because modding was how I grew up with gaming. It was such a shame that the video did not include the AI since teammate AI and infected AI can do smart stuff on occassion (even better with mods).

Gaming boycotts are one of the stupidest things to read. Even ignoring how the boycotters tend to buy the game anyway and defeat their purpose, most normies buy games blindly and do so in numbers. If a boycoot only has a few thousand members, no company will care if they're selling 7 million units.

The only gaming "boycotts" that work are when the game is shitty enough (Anthem) that people don't bother with it, which isn't really a boycott but is more effective than actual boycotts.

you mean the 11 or so devs that moved over to valve to the point turtle rock was so gutted it was basically an office with an reception desk? it was one of the reasons they got their name back.
besides, after 10 years "from the makers of l4d" means as much as "from the makers of saints row". and for the record, evolve's problem wasn't the gameplay, as much as people want to meme about that game.

This already exists, and has for a long time. Left 4 Dead 2 not only features all of the L4D1 campaigns, but also has a mutation that modifies the game to play just like L4D1. (Though you can only play L4D1 campaigns on it). Valve going back to modify L4D1 would just be redundant.

What rock have you been living under?
A turtle's rock.

I'll let myself out.

Gonna have to press X to doubt on that one. Evolve suffered from really bad balancing. As the monster, you either get caught at stage 1 or 2 and be basically guaranteed to be killed unless the team really sucked, or at stage three your stats are so high that a single mistake from the hunters will ensure they all die. And actually hunting the monster? Well, it's a glorified game of hide and seek.

That said, the price tag was the bigger issue. This was, for all intents and purposes, a $300 game. $60 base game, with a $60 Season Pass, with a good $180+ in DLC cosmetics.
