It helps that L4Ds voice acting is comparatively brief, and largely useful. B4B has a cast that never shut the fuck up, and talk more about their whacky personalities than providing tactical info.

Core gameplay is fun, but difficulty remains poorly tuned. Specials spawn too often and take too many bullets to kill. Pick one or the other, devs, not both. In practice there's no medium difficulty setting. Only Easy, Very Hard, and Anal Rape. I played on easy for a while to grind cards and get used to the game. Got to the point where I could pretty much carry a team. Thought to myself hey, I'm sure I'm more than ready to move up to at least normal. Got absolutely fucking rekt. Again. And again. And again.

Needs a drastic difficulty rebalance, but if that's done right, has the potential to be an excellent game.

EDIT: Forgot I posted here during the beta complaining about exactly the same things. That's probably not a good sign.

This. L4D's voice acting was usually tied to something happening in the game, be it a special spawning or you reaching a certain point in a map, or finding a specific item, etc.

Thought it was just me getting unlucky with shit pubbies so i'm glad to hear that someone else is struggling with the "medium" difficulty.

agree 100%

"normal" is unplayable with cross play on. And even with experienced PC players it's nearly impossible to complete more than 3 stages.

I tried "hard" mode the other day and couldn't leave the spawn on stage 1. About half a dozen Specials spawned outside the safe door and completely wiped my team. :story:

Yeah this is another thing that B4B got wrong. SIs are way too tanky and there are too many of them.

And I say this as a crazy person who used to play Realism Versus in L4D2. It's not just you.
If it helps as a reference for others... I was never THAT good at Left 4 Dead, but I usually played on Advanced with pubs and did fine. Veteran in B4B (alleged "medium" difficulty) is way, WAY harder than that.

I've only played during open and closed beta, and maybe it's because only players who cared about L4D type of games played during then, but most pubs wasn't that bad on medium, and we made it to the end a good 70% of the time. The other 30% tend to be someone had to leave because of real life, and the bots that replace them couldn't even preform at the baseline of a l4d2 vanilla bot.(Yes the bots during beta was that fucking bad).

If you got tied down by a spitter or what ever the fuck that version of the SI is called, and needed to be meleed out, you are basically dead. Bots couldn't even fucking free you. :story: They would just stand around you, as you slowly lost HP, and stare. It was basically like they was damning you for playing, and letting them exist.

But aside from that, rest is all spot on for how the beta was for "medium" setting boiling down to. Send a million special infected with HP pools bigger then tanks from L4D. My biggest fucking gripe from beta was how boring Medium got after a bit. All the cool corruption cards are tied to nightmare, and so if you wanted to shake up the gameplay, you had to play it, just to see some of the more neat cards tht change how you have to play.

Acid zombies, timed hordes, more sleeper spawns, levels having no power, ect.

In their defense, the AI has gotten a BIT better about freeing and reviving. I wouldn't say it's GOOD, but you no longer have 3 bots standing over you, staring at you like speds while you bleed out.

And thank god for that then. It made vet impossible for solo players during beta,

Also, now that I think of it, I'm pretty sure timed hordes and sleeper spawns at least can happen on lower difficulties now.

What version of Left 4 Dead did you play? In the version I've been playing bots are useless, they can't use melee weapons, they always step in spitter goo, they waste medkits, they can't keep up during events, and they're slow to react to people being pinned by specials (if they react at all).
I took my meds and my rage at existence has subsided so now I can communicate like a real person again.

I was one of those sadists who have the Realism-Survival-Solo runs under their belt. Lmao. I 100%'d both L4D games on the 360 and 90%'d both games on Steam. I just gave up on doing the versus shit on PC- I got tired of those assholes who would have like a million points, then keep asking for a restart of the level, so when the next group of victims join in, they won't know they don't have a chance of actually winning Versus lmao.

What I really find disgusting about the game is how your ruins can easily be ruined by a drop in players.

The Mines Area is amazingly bad for teams, even with microphones and stacked teams the inability to destroy the mineshafts because the barrel didn't spawn AND nobody brought explosives AND the Ogre spawned? Good God. I did it better with three bots. Hell. I've been farming it, praying people disconnect so I can get more supply points since the Ogre is easy as fuck to kill on that level.. But people keep hiding where it can grab them and pull them outside for some reason.

It's like the game is designed to prey on the fidgety little 10 year old who can't sit still long enough to actually scower the level top and bottom. Not the mature psychopath who will select the right combination of cards that results in turning the player into an unstoppable demi-god.
Also, the character special abilities are almost worthless.

Mom, Rainbow Hair, Female Ellis and Hoffman are the best team combination period.
Ammo, Extra Life, Extra Slots.

Mandatory Black Guy is okay , Mandatory Hispanic Guy is responsible for ALL of the newbie behavior- Melee is cool but shit you die most of the time from specials, Mandatory Asian Girl's medic abilities are trash. Redneck Rampage on the otherhand is great for swarm mode.

Drop-in mechanics are broken and it's not always the fault of the players. They get the default guns of whatever bot they happen to spawn as (rather than getting to pick their character), minimal ammo, and no deck. They can change character and deck at the next safe room but they're still saddled with whatever weapons they spawned with or happened to find. And even then, this causes character abilities to just flat not work sometimes.

I complained vigorously about this during the beta and it has yet to be fixed.

Played a bit recently with my brother, trying to rekindle the L4D vibes. My immediate thought is that the step up from difficulty from easy to normal is way too big: more specials who are tougher while you do less damage all compounding at once as the game chucks a million crow piles in your path and the puking specials who can snipe you from anywhere without ever missing all feels like a bit much to include in a single difficulty step. By contrast, the easy difficulty is babyshit -- some of the "finales" were huge anticlimaxes that we basically strolled through.
I like the card system more than I thought I would. The way you accumulate some of the stacking card bonuses over the course of a run to keep up with the increased spawns feels quite nice, and the corruption cards are cool too. Like I say, I just want a difficulty setting harder than babby's first zombie game and easier than the current normal.

Also, the AI Director is so much more of a dick than the one in L4D; spawning an Exploder around the corner to take off 50% of your health before you even get a chance to react is not a fun or interesting challenge, it's just stupid.

I played a few rounds of this it it kinda feels more like Evolve 2: Zombie Boogaloo than the Left 4 Dead games to me at least.

"hm yes i will play doc as an aggressive cqc lone wolf and never heal anyone" - t. consolefag

And that was the moment I turned off crossplay. Honestly though I think I'm done with the game until they fix the difficulty. It's either too easy or too hard depending on the settings, and just feels shitty either way.

Against my better judgement I've been putting a few more hours into this. I'm enjoying it more now I'm in the groove, but fuck me the Ridden have terrible sound design. I can't tell any difference between an Ogre or Sleeper or Stinger or Bruiser or Rotter or whatever else the fuck the specials are. The amount of times one of those fat explosive walkers has appeared out of thin air...

L4D had such distinct vocal cues for the monsters I still remember them years without playing.

God. I just wanted a NEW left 4 dead

At first, I thought we were bad players.
But no, what exactly can you do when all the corruption cards are for armored specials and armored regulars? You step out of a the safe room and before you can even react, you're slimed, exploded, smashed, grabbed and surrounded by regular ridden that deal 40% more damage and wear armor. What can you do to prevent this? How can you avoid this? You don't.

There's no getting good here.

Or the Finales where anyone who doesn't have a speed build is going to get overrun./ taking abilities that reduce your stamina.

At the end of the day, I realize. This is just Dead Island with unexplained RPG mechanics and filled with fake difficulty. You know, like those old arcade games where the owner set it the machine to Max Difficulty and laughed at people and told them he had it on easy.

There are roles, but there's no EZ Role. You have to unlock cards and build the role from the top to the bottom.
None of the four players have medic cards? Guess what? No real medic that run! Or oh no! You have a shotgun build and everyone else decides to use shotguns? Say goodbye to YOUR ammo supply! Or you have a medic! Too bad the game only spawns offensive item upgrade.

This game has the logistical planning of a shitty D&D session.

You want to be able to even get 50% of the way through "normal/veteran" difficulty? You need to grind over 20K points for cards or if you're a PC player, just hack the game. You're not gonna hack the currency, but you can give out infinite ammo and medkits and teleport out of reach. I'm going to admit that faggot got us through the boat in act 1 because fuck,. it's fucking impossible. Hockers and the Spitters kept spawning endlessly and we couldn't even make it down the stairs to the engine room, the trauma damage kept adding up.
Then boom. He telports down there. Arms the first bomb. Comes back, saves everyone. We arm the second one and then walk out like wow.

And the best irony of the game. It's designed to turn players against each other. Folks with no concept of teamwork playing a game that doesn't imply teamwork , needs dedicated roles and everyone has to take their time looking at the stats of the add-ons scattered around the level.
I'm the type of person who puts the team first and I expect my team to look after me. I did this in several games? Apparently, not going to sonic fast means I'm the problem -- but when you're out of ammo running around punching shit, and I'm carrying 75% more ammo than normal at the cost of my stamina, with more than enough for you- Am I still the problem?

Half the problems with the game could be solved if they treated it like Remnant from the Ashes I absolutely hate fighting over loot after doing my part. While the guy with 400% move speed gets everything.
