Severe autism can be reversed and symptoms reduced to an indistinguishable level, scientists have discovered.

Two non-identical twin girls in the US were found to have a level of autism at 20 months old that required “very substantial support”.

A groundbreaking trial saw their parents and a team of medical experts create a bespoke two-year programme of interventions designed to help the children thrive and flourish as much as possible.

Scientists say the programme was successful, with both girls undergoing “dramatic improvements” in the severity of their symptoms.

The progress of one of the girls, described only as Twin P, was heralded as “a kind of miracle” by one of the paediatricians. Twin P scored a 43 out of 180 on the Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist scale in March 2022 and this was reduced to just four by October 2023.

“One of the twins’ symptoms were reversed to the point of being indistinguishable from children who had never had a history of autism symptoms,” Dr Chris D’Adamo, study author from the University of Maryland, told The Telegraph.

“This twin’s functions are comparable to those who never had an autism diagnosis.”

The other girl, known as Twin L, had more severe autism aged 20 months, scoring 76, and this was reduced to 32 a year and a half later.

“[This twin] improved dramatically, but not quite as much,” said Dr D’Adamo.

Improvements unlikely to be undone

The scientists do not use the term “cure”, but believe the improvements are unlikely to be undone over time.

“Because autism is a developmental condition, one can safely say that once they have overcome the developmental aspects of autism and returned to a typical developmental trajectory, they are very unlikely to exhibit the common symptoms of autism again,” said Dr D’Adamo.

“Symptoms that could return might be more along the lines of things like anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, sensory issues, but not necessarily the behavioural aspects of autism.”

The twins underwent behavioural analysis, speech therapy and a strict gluten-free diet and nutrition programme as part of the trial to reduce inflammation.

The diet was casein-free, a protein found in milk; low-sugar; had no artificial colours or dyes; zero ultra-processed foods; primarily organic; and locally sourced.

The girls were also given daily supplements for omega-3 fatty acids, multivitamins, vitamin D, carnitine, and others.

‘No singular cure to reverse symptoms’

Writing in the study, published in the MDPI journal Sexes, the anonymous parents said they knew there would not be a “singular cure” to reverse the symptoms and instead the programme focused on alleviating the “total load” on the children.

“Despite sharing similar genes and identical conception, gestation, birth experience, and post-natal factors - as well as benefiting from consistent nurture, home environment and family dynamics - each daughter presented an ASD diagnosis entirely uniquely,” they write.

“Conventional statistics have stacked the odds against the ability to recover a child from an ASD diagnosis.

“Our approach was therefore focused on following a nonconventional, holistic understanding of each daughter’s individual needs, exploring root cause and designing customised support.

“We committed to being highly involved in all the interventions we explored, educating ourselves and advocating for what we felt was best for our children.

“Most importantly, our experience as parents has been the desire to create and maintain a profound and loving bond with each of our daughters - and to remain parents, not practitioners.

“Through this approach, we have witnessed the radical recovery of one daughter - who presents today as a joyful, engaging, spirited, extremely bright four-year-old.

“We remain steadfast in our support for our other daughter whose progress has also consistently amazed us and has reminded us that recovery is possible at each person’s individual pace.”

The case study is published in the Journal of Personalized Medicine.

It irritates me when people say this like this.
Sure, autism may be overdiagnosed as a result of such broad diagnostic thresholds as to make the term seemingly meaningless, but are you gonna watch this with a straight face and say there's nothing intrinsically wrong with this guy?

https://youtube.com/watch?v=j4PTf7LgsIE
That guy is what happens when parents don't enforce rules of normality on autistic kids from an early age, causing them to get worse and worse.

I've seen it happen in real life. Parents of a kid who could've turned out normal after being diagnosed early but instead they followed dumb advice from equally clueless "experts" about treating them with silk gloves and ended up with a guy in his early 20s that is now basically screwed for life. And when you try to point out to them that their refusal to do anything that might cause stress to their little boy like actively stamping out his autistic tendencies is what led to this, they basically plug their ears and pretend not to hear you. On some level I think they do understand that they fucked up but they really don't want to admit it to themselves because both of them grew up in kind of shit households and overcompensated by being very nice and caring parents. Who just happened to be cursed with a mentally irregular child.

But attributing non-verbal levels of stunted development to bad parenting is beyond ignorant. If a normal child is around speaking people, it will learn to talk.
Unless he stays at home being coddled by Mommy all day because he's an extra special star child and quickly learns that the worse his "symptoms" get, the more attention he gets. It's basically Munchausen syndrome taken to its extreme.

I know people that didn't talk until they were in school because their parents enabled them. They weren't brain damaged or haunted or fucking whatever, they were just lazy kids with enabler parents. But I absolutely guarantee if those people were born during Current Year they'd have seen 127 specialists who would have made the problem infinitely worse by saying "this is just the way you are and it's okay if you never talk! we're gonna give you lots and lots of attention because you're different!"

Once again, I'm not denying some level of culpability with regards to how they were raised. Hell, just watch the body language of the mother in that clip. She probably wasn't the best mother he could ask for.
On the same note, downsie kids can grow up to be Walmart greeters with the right kind of support while others lacking that support just end up rotting away enjoying their finger paints.

Still, there absolutely is some level of intrinsic developmental problems among the severely autistic and denying this is "blank slate" levels of retardery.

Autism is nothing but an excuse to never learn how to behave like a normal human being. Yes it takes a bit of effort to regulate the things you do and say. I understand it's easier to just not give a fuck and do and say whatever you want but it's an extremely useful skill to be able to regulate your behaviour. If you struggle with this, try fucking harder.
Some of the more normal end of it is, yes. The worse end of it, the stuff associated with various syndromes like Retts, that needs 24 hour care and leaves them severely disabled, that’s very real.
Lumping all those groups together was a bad idea.

Cool, now let's create a therapy that causes autism in grown ass adults. Bonus points if it can be aerosolized for use on the urban battlefield.

How? With severe beatings.
Don't discount the healing power of alcohol.

Is it clear she even had actual autism then, or is it just a result of her being socialized with her twin sister who was quite autistic that she picked up a lot of that behaviour

Regardless of the very interesting links the gut microbiome and mental heath, this just sounds like these girls had a lot more discipline than the average child would get these days. Which of course was what happened in ye olden days with corporal punishment when autists had it beaten out of them.

March 2021, the twins received a series of “catch up” vaccines that had been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The parents noticed a worsening of some symptoms after this round of vaccinations, including significant language loss for L.

Fake study. There's no link between Vaccines and autism.

This reads like a laundry list of countering everything wrong with processed foods with the possible exception of the gluten free part, though I'll remain skeptical until we get reproducibility...

Still, I'd call that a moderate think, can't pin it to diet specifically but I'd be curious to see if we can get studies specifically regarding diet and autism symptoms as there could easily be a link.

Right, like any condition it's a spectrum of severity.

Some people with bad eyesight can do fine with OTC reading glasses, others are basically blind without surgery and prescription glasses. Or how some people have a learning disability that can be overcome through therapy while others are completely mentally disabled.

This is exactly what the writer of the article wanted you to come away thinking. Tons of other shit was done along side that "natural" bullshit to the point where you can spin any narrative you want by picking and choosing what to report on. They used genetic testing to identify what neurotransmitters they are likely to be down-regulating and provided supplements based on those findings. They engaged in multiple different behavioral therapies. They underwent fucking "osteopathic treatment" for fucks sake.

It's a schizophrenic mix of stuff that might possibly be beneficial and outright pseudoscience. All shit millions of parents do for their autistic children every year to no effect.
If the treatment did anything, we don't know which aspects were beneficial. And if any aspects were beneficial, they're clearly only negligibly so as these twins are an exceptional case.

They were both premature, and surrogate born as well. IVf doubles your chances of birth defects and genetic issues. Surrogacy removes a baby from its mother and has to cause attachment issues. Premature birth can result in developmental delays.

It’s just not possible to say these kids had autism, it never used to be diagnosed so early. It’s entirely possible they both have suffered from a premature birth and have a degree of developmental delay. Intensive nutritional and developmental support can help with that.
Having said all that, personally I think there’s a big interaction between autism and the gut.
