I still think the basement reveal could have worked it if you tweaked it a little bit and not make things seem like The Holocaust.
Honestly the Basement reveal as is could've worked if Isayama just made Marley this oppressive shithole. The worldbuilding just gets worse when everyone is on the same mindset as Marley, like sure Marley is more hated but the entire world basically hands Marley more weapons with all the Eldian refugees.

Heck the idea of the Outside world being more advanced is actually a genuinely neat twist, but its executed horribly on part due to how AOT's worldbuilding is just barebones.

Frankly, I think the whole basement mystery is what killed the series. That, and the truth behind the titans, and their serum.

The origins of the titans, and what the outside world was like should've remained unsolved.

Wish I was a farmer at the time this thread started. It felt like I was the only one who thought this series turned to shit by then.

I thought this manga was brilliant at the beginning, but after the basement reveal I started to see some cracks. By the time skip and crippled Eren I realized Isayama had no idea what the fuck he was doing outside of introducing more mysteries to keep it going.
Admittedly I was fascinated by the genocide plan and was willing to forget everything and give him props for having steel coconuts where his balls were if he could have Eren just do it and live with the consequences. But after the cringevengers assembled and the story tried to tell me that a group of 8 (? I don't even remember how many they were. Was completely disillusioned by that point) humans had a chance to stop the nigh-omnipotent Eren from achieving his goal, I knew the story was doomed to a GOT S8 fate.

It's actually hilarious how badly he botched something as simple as Gabbie's story arc. Instead of a brainwashed girl who slowly shed her old beliefs through exposure to the people she was raised to hate, he wrote a psychopathic Mary Sue that could not take a hint, constantly endangered the lives of herself and everyone around her, and got zero repercussions for her actions in the end, creating yet another point of division for the fanbase instead of a character anyone could sympathize with.

Anyway still reading through the thread but for now I just wanna say Isayama is an edgy grimdark mystery box hack who is not as good a writer as he thinks he is. It's a certain kind of hilarious to see someone who says he wants to open an onsen with the tears of his fans shit the bed this massively.
Funny you mentioned the Mystery Box, I just watched Billiam's 8-hours Lost Videos (and it's still not over yet) and I just finally understand the fatal flaw of JJ Abrams' Mystery Box. Its a method that only served to prolong a story indefinitely, not to tell a story with ending. And though it might be good to create a shared sandbox storytelling, it also requires active collaboration with other participants. Abrams failed that when he ditched Lost and just hand the wheel to Damon and Carlton, forcing them to come up with explanations when they wanted to finish the series

Back to Isayama though, it felt that a lot of the mysteries in the series, especially after the timeskip, only exist to make the story longer. That's why the answers and explanations are weird or outright ridiculous, he never had any intention to end it

Man I remember when the Titans were this scientific anomaly that had Hange so excited studying them and documenting their behaviours and weaknesses. Where did they come from? Were they created or did they evolve?

If you had told me that we'd get to a point where it's just as simple as slurping some spine juice while some giant baboon screams I would've told you you were crazy.

Tbh I think something as simple as bio engineering would've been a satisfactory explanation for the origin of the Titans. It didn't have to be anything major given that they were only a part of the mysteries of their world. I actually liked the shift from them to humans as the actual threat a la Jurassic Park. The problem was this whole retarded ancient evil monster plot.

Maybe leaving it a mystery may have been good for the series, but I personally think it's a weak choice that might be even worse in the hands of someone like Isayama. Basically he could do all the shit he's already done, but then not have to explain any of it because "it's a mystery".

I watched Billiam's vids (think the series is at 9+ hours now). I liked it just for the sheer depth he went into, but imo he was very kind to all 3 of JJ, Damon and Carlton. They fell prey to the old "I must subvert expectations at all costs" bug that seems to hit showrunners of popular series. I'm curious to see if he'll cover their contributions to the massive shitshow that Lost became in the next video.

I think the fatal flaw of the mystery box is that JJ can't write for shit. Mystery box as a concept is retarded anyway. You're gonna have to open it eventually, so what kind of idiot would assume an audience would be satisfied just never finding out what the mystery is? It's like a chef puts a dish on the stove and expects the customer to just keep sniffing the aroma indefinitely or something equally stupid.
Just like GRRM's "gardening" concept, It's a fun anecdote to share to show how mysterious and "not like other writers" you are, to make fans go "wow how deep and insightful" but in practice it's:
1. Just an excuse to avoid actually writing your story well.
2. A recipe for disaster as shown by the track records of both guys.

Bringing up GRRM also reminds me that Isayama shat on GOT's ending with that "orz" tweet and now he might've botched his own series even worse:story:.

I’d say the basement on paper is fine, if only for an ending or cash out point.

As for Titan origins, I’d think it’d be cool it wa as thing where there was regression to being a mindless cannibal, and I guess the shifters were genetic mutation where the regression was happening more slowly, if not an outright crawl. Abilities could be another example of mutation. What do you think of that idea?

As for outside world, as everyone said: fine concepts, needed more time to cook. A lot more time. Or at least needed to be refined a lot.
I expected some kind of bio-weapon that could kill a nest of Titans. Much better than a stupid time traveling plot.
I’d have gone with “Titan shifters and coordinate control dies with Eren, and the shifters are the less dangerous ones”, or something along those lines.

Still reading through. Just wanted to comment on this as I don't see anyone else noticing it at the time:

Why does it look like Eren's decapitated head is kissing Mikasa back?
I know he's a shitty artist but it could also be his coke-fueled rampage on the hearts of his fans. Did......... did he try to portray this necrophiliac travesty as romantic?
Perhaps Eren's final act was to pucker up for the psycho that cut his head off to have a "real first kiss"?

And can you believe this this is somehow the best drawn kiss we get?

Because there's an earlier scene depicting a wedding kiss, and it just looks like the bride, and groom are just pressing their faces against each other.

I do remember that this whole chapter revolves around Eren and Mikasa imagining themselves at a cabin all by themselves. Eremika shippers would love that.

In his defense, most people don't look as good as they think when they're kissing. I've seen numerous kisses that look like what he drew.

I do think he probably tried to draw them more like the Hollywood ideal and failed because of his autism, but I gotta say people really do look like that when they kiss.

What I wanna know is whether he meant for Eren to use his last breath to reciprocate the depraved fetish of his psychotic sister, or whether he tried to draw a dead guy being kissed and inadvertently made it look mutual.

At the time it was so bizarre how much he shat on Mikasa in just 3 or so pages. She was already destroyed beyond repair by being made useless outside of having badass moments and being told she's cattle, but this man had her have a mental breakdown in the middle of a battle, kill her brother and make out with his head.

Just........Wow :story:

Whatever the reason, I still love how Isayama destroyed the two current most popular ships in the most ridiculous way possible.

Honestly, I'm surprised too.

It seemed like no one else was seeing what I was seeing. It was all just so obvious, and yet no one else was realizing it, and I was starting to wonder if we were even reading the same series, or that maybe I was somehow wrong, and 2000 years of racism over pigs was good writing, and I was just too dumb to see that.

Frankly, when I found other people on this site thought the same thing I did, it was an incredible relief.
Most anime fans are hypetards that only live for the dopamine hits of seeing the product they consume get hyped by shill youtubers. They coalesce into these gay little fandoms (cults) only to echo chamber how awesome the current product is and will bot MAL and polls to get their dopamine in seeing how right they are to like popular thing. If the product isn't actually good just ignore the flaws and come up with fanfics and improbable theories to convince yourself it's peak fiction anyways. When the hack author inevitably fumbles and turns out generic shonen #438482223 was the same as literally all the ones before it just move the next one to forget the disappointment.

As much as I hate the cringe weebs these days, this is still a very hot (and hilarious) take considering your pfp is that of Pokemon

I believe their pfp is a reference to PreciousLeaf, who is in fact, a "hyper retard" with a thread here on the farms, not that they actually like Pokemon.
