This is a bit of sperging but since AOT fans like to attack other manga to prop up AOT, one of which is Jojo, which while it is silly at times has done a better job at doing many endings that involve the main character's death and better at doing a bittersweet ending that AnR is trying to go for.

That alone puts it leaps, and bounds ahead of every other rewrite whose primary goal seems to be just Eren telling Armin he, and Historia fucked.

Wish I was a farmer at the time this thread started. It felt like I was the only one who thought this series turned to shit by then.

I thought this manga was brilliant at the beginning, but after the basement reveal I started to see some cracks. By the time skip and crippled Eren I realized Isayama had no idea what the fuck he was doing outside of introducing more mysteries to keep it going.
Admittedly I was fascinated by the genocide plan and was willing to forget everything and give him props for having steel coconuts where his balls were if he could have Eren just do it and live with the consequences. But after the cringevengers assembled and the story tried to tell me that a group of 8 (? I don't even remember how many they were. Was completely disillusioned by that point) humans had a chance to stop the nigh-omnipotent Eren from achieving his goal, I knew the story was doomed to a GOT S8 fate.

It's actually hilarious how badly he botched something as simple as Gabbie's story arc. Instead of a brainwashed girl who slowly shed her old beliefs through exposure to the people she was raised to hate, he wrote a psychopathic Mary Sue that could not take a hint, constantly endangered the lives of herself and everyone around her, and got zero repercussions for her actions in the end, creating yet another point of division for the fanbase instead of a character anyone could sympathize with.

Anyway still reading through the thread but for now I just wanna say Isayama is an edgy grimdark mystery box hack who is not as good a writer as he thinks he is. It's a certain kind of hilarious to see someone who says he wants to open an onsen with the tears of his fans shit the bed this massively.

Possibly? I'm not sure.

The only thing I can really think of is that PATHs being introduced, and expanded upon earlier could've done it, but that might've also kept the series more grounded given how the wackiness it caused was the result of Isayama rushing for time, and just not giving a fuck anymore.

The basement reveal could've also done it, but that would require the stuff in it being totally different, and I'm not sure what you could've actually put in it to get the similar results as the ones we did.

I was on Narutoforums and reddit at the time and there was so much autistic explanation of the PATHS system and unearned faith in Hackayama's ability to "stick the landing", as if a satisfying ending would excuse all the shit he wrote up to that point.

"No no you see Eren actually looked into the future through his successor and saw the past through his predecessor so he influenced his dad but his dad couldn't influence him back because the AT can only talk to people in the past. Remember when that guy told Grisha to save Armin? Etc. Etc."

Dudes were even speculating on where the fucking spine creature came from, as if the idea of a fucking prehistoric centipede with the powers of a god hiding in a tree waiting to imbue someone with powers would make sense in AOT if only we knew where it came from.

I tell ya, even during the hilarious tug of war scene where the creature was trying to get back into Eren while Reiner was going "oooooohhh no you don't", there was still hope the series would be saved by a good final chapter.

Sometimes a complicated idea is just retarded and not some masterclass of complex writing.

Honestly, I'm surprised too.

It seemed like no one else was seeing what I was seeing. It was all just so obvious, and yet no one else was realizing it, and I was starting to wonder if we were even reading the same series, or that maybe I was somehow wrong, and 2000 years of racism over pigs was good writing, and I was just too dumb to see that.

Frankly, when I found other people on this site thought the same thing I did, it was an incredible relief.

I still think the basement reveal could have worked it if you tweaked it a little bit and not make things seem like The Holocaust.
