I really miss the days when Attack on Titan didn't get reduced to the "genocide good" story where autistic fanboys project their sense of patriotism onto fictional characters. Fuck Isayama for making possibly one of the worst timeskips ever conceived.
I still think the timeskip could have been at least okay. The focus just went onto the wrong things and made the wrong steps.

Yeah like a timeskip could work, the issue is that it had a lot of rushed development and the only thing Isayama seemed dedicated to doing was the Rumbling and making an MCU type of climax (given he was inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy in where his story would go). He wasn't really committed to anything else which is prevalent in how he can't decide between making Eren a soft-spoken psycho who understands his enemies, some angry edgelord screaming about "FREEDOM", or a sympathetic martyr.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Eren killing everyone does make sense when you look at his character.

It's the execution of it, and really everything else around it that's the problem.

The problem is that it only sort of makes sense. It isn't outside the realm of his character, but it is completely outside the realm of his actions, the context for the story. Eren is not a subtle person, and if his end goal was total annihilation, I don't think he would have hidden it. It would have also made for interesting conflict inside of the story, but since its revealed so late and pretty much out of left field, it comes off as lazy and stupid.

The same thing with the whole Mikasa thing. We're just going to ignore she wanted to hop on his dick for the entire first third of the series and then just family zoned him and then decides not? Riiiggghhhtttt. Obviously the whole ending is completely out of nothing and was never intended.

I just don't see how people worship Eren. His plan is fucking retarded. He's fucking retarded. He's an idiot. He's got these god-like levels of abilities and his only idea is "ME KILL EVERYBODY". It really is stupid. He needed to be portrayed as increasingly unhinged, literally just going fucking insane and his friends just using and ignoring him. The entire story would be 1000% better if Eren was a victim, used and abused until his sanity was completely shattered.

But instead Isayama was either told off his original ending or just decided to go 'fuck it' and didn't want Eren to win. Though I honestly find the entire ending sequence hilarious because its so fucking stupid. The incompetence throughout the entire ending portion is honestly breathtaking, and its laughable that people consider this a masterpiece.

People literally worship Eren only because they project their own sense of patriotism onto him and think he's some hero fighting against a world that wants to exterminate his country (ignoring the fact Eren actively provoked it) and combined with edgelords who think murder and genocide are super cool and mature. Like they seriously talk about the characters as though they were real people who actually betrayed their own (as in the reader's) country.

Basically what you get if you combine /pol/tards with 13 year old edgelords (though they overlap)

See, I don't even think Eren would've had to have hidden it if he just randomly snapped one day, and just did it on the spur of the moment.

Look, Eren's canonically stupid, and I think that if you combined that factor along with all the bullshit he's had to deal with in his life like you said, the ending would've been much better. Hell, I think even the idiot part would've been enough.

"Why is Eren doing this?!"

"He's a violent idiot who doesn't think things through and literally gets turned on by the thought of killing people."

"Oh yeah..."

Sure, it would've been a stretch, but it makes more sense than what we actually got. Yeah, that's not saying much, but if Isayama wanted to still make a shitpost out of the final arc while still keeping it a bit serious this would've been an easy way to go.

Letting a character be defined by their actions and then their exposited feelings and goals is something a lot of writers and nearly every single fanbase forgets. In many ways what they say about themselves is just a measuring stick against which their actions are judged. Sometimes they did something because of provocation and it isn’t what they’d normally do, sometimes they lose sight of their real interests.

I will always love the Sopranos fanbase because they’re the only fanbase I know of which does, even the Tony-simps kind of know he’s a giant hypocrite,

But back to AOT I notice vidya and anime fandoms can get particularly bad about this. I think it has a lot to do with how many Japanese properties incorporate introspective talky moments into their story that you can safely take quite seriously. And the nature of manga writing can make it difficult to remember what a character has been capable of up to that point, or create a need for big changes to push things along expediently. I think that’s the corner AOT was backed into. Isayama got hooked on an idea then had to work backward from it. Probably a notion of self-sacrificing romantic love, runaway idealism or self-abnegation, and Mikasa’s overweening popularity. So Eren basically debases himself for her, and his plan has a pseudo-profound full circle effect with the story’s beginning. But it’s vomit-inducing.

Also Eren’s plan was clearly something he was hoping he’d figure out later on. He didn’t really know what he wanted it to be.

I’m reading the manga now and it’s hard to get through despite being obvious quality because I know a lot of convolution with no payoff is coming.

You know, that's a good point. There's been a lot of discussion about how Eren's plan being genocide isn't necessarily a bad idea from a writing perspective, but that comes with the assumption that it was explicitly planned and built up towards. That doesn't take into account the idea that it might've literally been the only thing Iseyama could think of after writing himself into a corner.

It reminds me of Mystery Science Theatre’s episode The Sword and The Dragon. And the critical plot point “Ilya’s Plan”. The plan is totally inscrutable, Mike and the Bots keep demanding to know what it is, and facetiously conclude that “it’s still being taught at West Point” on account of how magically effective it ended up being.

You know, I have a confession to make.

I actually want the anime-onlies to like this ending.

I know I've spent the majority of this thread saying how they were all going to hate it, and shit, but over the past year, I've noticed something.

Most of the people who hate this ending have gone completely insane and have made AoT and hating it their entire lives. They can't accept that their favorite comic had a bad ending and move on. They are effectively stuck in their fucking hatred, stupidity, delusions, and wounded pride, and just cannot get over it.

Funnily enough, they have done the opposite of what their Chad husbando said and have not kept moving forward.

But you know who I don't see exhibiting this behavior? People who liked the ending.

Sure, there's probably some of them out there who've made it their life's goal to defend the ending at all costs, but for the most part, they're a lot less angry, and saner about things, and have moved on.

I want more people like that instead of faggots telling me that genocide is a good thing, and that Eren feeling bad is more than a punishment for doing it, and that if I don't think that I'm spoiled, and ableist, and a bad person.

The ending's not actually good, but I'd rather deal with the people who say it is than people screeching about how moms bring life, and dads bring death and destruction, how Mikasa is a worthless, retarded, spineless bitch who only lives to serve Eren and how Historia is not that despite them constantly turning her into that exact same thing, how racism, and genocide is a good thing, and perfectly justifiable, and that a miscolored scarf, and three random birds is total proof of an AOE.

I would honestly rather deal with chill people who just like the ending and have moved on rather than the frothing mad autists who haven't, probably never will, and unironically believe in all of that terrible shit listed above.

Also, watching ending haters chimp out about anime-onlies liking stuff is just really, really funny. I mean, look at this shit.

Like the ending is trash but people who spend every waking hour hating are just pathetic and haven't moved on. Like these niggas are desperate for anime only fans to hate the same shit as they do, that they have actually tried to pretend to be anime only's as a way to get everyone to hate the same shit. Like there are people that definitely do, but they should be allowed to make those conclusions on their own.

EDIT: Also Anime Original Ending theories are even funnier when Isayama has more involvement now in the anime than he did with the first half of season 4. (I really hope it's a movie just so we can have tard rage in theatres)

It must be hard being perpetually miserable.

I still laughing at the fact if Eren been been an incestuous degenerate and let his adopted sister Mikasa ride him, much of his domestic problems would have been solved early on. Or using the PATHS to go back in time to save her parents and Mikasa would've stay as a friend to the Jeager family.

Honestly after Isayama killed off Ymir I haven't been looking at AoT smut all that much. Plus it seems most of the current AoT smut is BRICC, BRICCER and BRICCEST Mikasa and some Pieck art.
Don't forget all the Eren/Levi and Erwin/Levi works.
