Humanity being caged in walls was really the peak of this world, wasn’t it?
Yep like the moment the serumbowl happened it felt there was a gradual decline where characters made retarded decisions in service of the plot or were nerfed.

It really was, to the point where the final arc of series managed to take the overarching theme, moral, and original premise of the entire story, and just flush it down the toilet.

Outside of "never fall in love with your rapist", and "never set free livestock", the overall moral of AoT pretty much ended up being this:

"Never try to expand your horizons ever. Don't fight for a better life. Don't try anything new. Just stay in your fucking lane and do nothing. As a constipated manlet once said, just give up on your dreams and die because your life could be so much fucking worse, you ungrateful bastards."

:story:
Don't forget that the best way way to protect your friends is ruin all of their lives and act like a whiny jackass. Also something something war and racism bad

What was the original theme and moral supposed to be?

The theme before the timeskip shit seemed to be about humanity facing hope in the face of overwhelming despair and to keep going even if others before you were down. There were also themes of classism which Isayama actually handled well since it's not really hard to screw up. Then it went down hill when Isayama introduced shit he clearly did not understand as he thinks he does.

I agree with you at the first part. But Isayama's handling of classism was so average it's a bit childish, it's like he only did the barest minimum without adding anything to that theme. The rest of you post, I agree with, he added more and more themes and shits he clearly doesn't understand fully well

I say it's handled well only because it's decent compared to how retarded he is with racism, war, geopolitics, fate, and diplomacy

I hate how Isayama depicts how destiny is unchangeable, yet Eren does LITERALLY NOTHING to prevent the events of the manga; he just goes with the flow like a slave to fate. His ass was never free since the moment he decided to follow his visions to the letter, never stopping to think if this is really the right way, or just A way to free Eldia. Not once did he stop to consider an alternative, when he literally has a friend who practically SPECIALIZES in creating alternative solutions (Armong).

Just thinking about Eren post timeskip gives me conniptions. The man is a legitimate fool thinking he's a tactical genius.

The thing is Eren decided that fate was set when Mikasa family-zoned him. Like it's fine if he is a slave to his fate but the retard never tries to bother changing it. Never once did Isayama establish that things can't be changed beyond just Eren saying they can't. But let's be real if Isayama did look into it, then he'd find some bullshit to make the rumbling the only solution since it was clear since the serumbowl, Isayama wants his characters to make illogical decisions just so the rumbling can happen.

This is another thing that totally could've worked if it was intentional - Eren's "I have to keep moving forward" should've been his madness mantra, motivated by the various factors that have resulted in him being as fucked in the head as he is, and the tragic irony should come from the fact that someone whose sole motivation is freedom becomes a self-inflicted slave to fate (or, rather, his own idea of fate, which should be stressed in the story as not actually being real) who is so tunnel-visioned in his own insane "plan" that he is completely blind to the other options. It should be to the point where it's not so much that he's misguided, but that he's so far gone that he literally cannot comprehend why others may think his plan is a bad idea, because it's so clear and obvious to him what the solution to the problem is.

After having followed him to the end of the world, the revelation that his amazing plan that's been hyped up for IRL years is literally just fucking kill everyone should be horrifying for the characters; this should be an end-of-Mist-tier revelation as they realized that they'd went through so much danger on the assumption that he was this chessmaster setting up his pieces for his final play... only to find out that nope, he's actually a raving lunatic psychopath and they'd totally missed all the glaring red flags (cue flashback sequence showing questionable conversations they've had with him) because they wanted to believe.

And the funny thing is, Eren didn’t pretend to be a genius. All he really wanted to do was get revenge for his mother while also making sure he wasn’t just a tool to be used thanks to his power. Simple, but it’s something you could have a shonen MC with that can run a series. If I gripe on the pre timeskip (and even pre basement) era a lot, it’s because AOT had potential to be at least an enjoyable story when things were going on.

Isn’t that what happened? That the Survey Corps was left to kill Eren and stop his supporters? But even then, I don’t think it was played as the tragedy it was. And maybe the last chapter could have been fixed by not having Eren in there at all to at least not include his Mikasa meltdown.

I mean yeah, that's kinda my point. All the plot beats are there to make this story work... but the actual execution with how Eren was portrayed, combined with the retardation of the Marleyans making it read like Iseyama was implying that Eren is right, completely ruins all the potential the idea might've had.

In order to "fix" the story you'd have to change a lot of details, but most of the ideas and the overarching plot structure are actually fine.

I’d say that’s probably the most frustrating aspect of what’s happened over the series.

Yeah the dumb racism Isayama has written makes it hard to view Eren's actions as messed up no matter how much they passionately cry in the story.

I'm going to be honest though, if not genociding the rest of the world leads to your own family, friends, and nation being wiped off the map you're justified in going full murderhobo.

Where it becomes ridiculous is that Eren chooses a path that puts all his friends in danger multiple times, kill several of them, and end up "only" genociding 80% of the world, leading to Paradis being bombed back to the stone age anyhow

tbf the remaining 20% have justification for it and it has been many decades since for all of Eren's friends to live long enough and they died before Paradis got nuked.

Like the other issue with Eren's plan is that he also wanted to lose since he could've taken away the titan shifter abilities and since he controls all eldians he could've also turned the family members of the Marleyan Eldians into titans to make it onto land so no one can stop him.

Eren's plan was essentially an elaborate Lelouch gambit to make the island look good to the rest of the world for some reason because he decided to commit rumbling because his adopted step-sister told him she saw him as family.

Marley is really the biggest misstep in the story. If he hadn’t written them as cartoonishly racist Nazi caricatures, but rather as normal people who had been fed anti-Eldian propaganda their whole lives and have a range of feelings on the matter, the story’s biggest issue immediately gets fixed: Eren is now clearly and unambiguously wrong, because compromise is now a clear possibility.

Change that one detail, and change the ending to a successful genocide route, and you automatically bring the story from a 3/10 to like, at least a 6.

*sigh*
I wish Itachi got this much hate in Naruto.
I consider both Eren and Itachi both one and the same for being shit eating weasels who made everything worse in the long run
Unfortunately shonen tards and coonsumers been indoctrinated to protagonist morality is always right long before Dragonball existed. Nevermind the protagonist(s) being the ones to fuck everything up for everyone else in the short and long term.
