Longtime radio host Art Bell died Friday at his Pahrump home, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office announced. He was 72.

Bell’s paranormal-themed show, “Coast to Coast AM,” was syndicated on about 500 North American stations in the 1990s before he left the nightly show in 2002. He broadcast the show from Pahrump’s KNYE 95.1 FM, a station he founded.

Bell retired several times in his career, which included a short-lived show on SiriusXM satellite radio in 2013.

Returning to terrestrial radio afterward was not a difficult decision, he told the Pahrump Valley Times in August 2013.

“That’s easy, because I love it,” he said at the time. “It’s my life, and that’s all I have ever done. I went through a lot of family problems, so that interrupted things, and I was overseas for four years, and that certainly interrupted things. I went back into radio because I love it.”

Bell was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, on June 17, 1945. He served in the the U.S. Air Force as a medic during the Vietnam War.

According to the Coast to Coast AM website, Bell was an FCC licensed radio technician at age 13. He also set a Guinness World Record for a solo broadcast marathon, at more than 116 hours, while working as a DJ in Okinawa, Japan, the website said.

Oh shit, man, at least he went out on Friday the 13th. F.

He's with the shadow people now, plus he gets to learn the truth of John Lennon's murder as exposed by the prophet Steve Lightfoot, who revealed the truth that John Lennon was murdered by horror author Stephen King.

RIP Art, started listening around the Mel’s Holes episode, unlike Noorey he wasn’t afraid to confront his crazy guests when they went too far.

I'm one of those creeps that likes to call into the radio shows and I've spoken to George Noory on the program several times, unfortunately, when Art was on I could never get through. The great thing about Art was how he'd deal with the callers. He wasn't afraid of calling them liars and idiots when they'd say some really stupid and outlandish shit. Noory, on the other hand, nice guy that he is, would never challenge the callers on anything and would just idly agree with them no matter how silly their comments.

He was a real serious radio nerd. He'd always spaz out at the callers on cell phones for not being on a land line.

Oh, Art was definitely a radio nerd. He was respected by all the big radio guys in the business though, from what I've heard. Even people that thought his show was a joke and that he was a borderline quack respected his dedication, his hustle, and his passion for radio.

A great clip of fellow radio legend, Phil Hendrie, and comedian/actor Kevin Pollack talking about Art Bell on Pollack's podcast. Starting at 57:00 minutes is when they start talking about Art. Definitely worth a listen if you are a fan of Bell, because if you are unfamiliar with Phil Hendrie, he hosts a comedy radio program where he does various impressions, one of those being Art Bell. His Art impression is perfect as he not only has the voice down, but also his mannerisms, flow, and inflections. Hendrie does his Art Bell impression in this clip btw, it's f'ing hilarious.

For years I used to listen, sporadically, to his radio show on my drive home from work. (He was retired by then but would guest host occasionally.) I wasn't a committed listener, but it was obvious why he was considered the gold standard for that kind of radio. None of his replacements, as enjoyable as they are, have ever been as good at it as he was. His delivery was unfailingly sincere and professional when faced with the craziest material, and that's exactly what a show like Coast to Coast needs.

This hits surprisingly hard. I guess he represented for me what he represented for a lot of people, a way to connect again to that wondrous awe of The Unknown that's educated out of us as we get older.

Coast-to-Coast in general and Art Bell in particular made a 170 mile nightly commute home bearable for a year. See you in the Phantom Zone, buddy.

Do you think it was angels?

Yeah I liked how Art was game for basically any crazy shit as long as you really believed it, but if you were just making it up he didn't put up with it, like the time he banished The Amazing Kreskin from the show forever.

I enjoyed Art's Coast-to-Coast AM and Dreamland when they were on. Missed him when he left and that miserable George Noory took over (one of the worst radiomen i've ever experienced).

Have fun in dreamland, Art!

I used to go fishing with my Other and we would listen to classic episodes of Coast to Coast with Art Bell. Being out in the boonies with it pitch black outside made it even better, in my opinion. Gonna miss him.

I owe "Coast to Coast A.M." a huge debt for giving me a greater appreciation for people on the fringes of society. Many of the guests were benign lolcows in their own right. Art always presented these people to us in a way that allowed us to make up our own minds, something that's sorely missing from most media today. Whether you ended up believing them or not, you always left with feelings of respect and affection for these outsiders. Thank you, Art, for helping me cultivate a more open mind.

Man, this guy is either like Ghost on TCR in that he's in on the joke, or he's just the most oblivious person to ever live.

I really enjoyed him in Prey, I don't think I ever heard his actual radio show though

It was pretty genius storytelling really. In the first 15 minutes of the game the main character of the game and the entire bar he's in are abducted by aliens. Throughout as you're roaming around an alien ship you get treated to the radio show where callers are describing what they're seeing to an increasingly skeptical Art Bell. Hearing him dismiss people as prank callers in between blasting aliens in the face is pretty fucking funny.

RIP, AM radio will never be the same.

I don’t have much to say but...Rip Art Bell. Always there, late at night to fuel my curiousity for the unknown and strange, laughter and my constant insomnia. I will miss that. F for respect and Ayyy lmao.

The problem with Noory is he believed the shit his guests spewed. Art would egg on the loonies in a very tongue-in-cheek way and it was epic awesomeness.
