Longtime radio host Art Bell died Friday at his Pahrump home, the Nye County Sheriff’s Office announced. He was 72.

Bell’s paranormal-themed show, “Coast to Coast AM,” was syndicated on about 500 North American stations in the 1990s before he left the nightly show in 2002. He broadcast the show from Pahrump’s KNYE 95.1 FM, a station he founded.

Bell retired several times in his career, which included a short-lived show on SiriusXM satellite radio in 2013.

Returning to terrestrial radio afterward was not a difficult decision, he told the Pahrump Valley Times in August 2013.

“That’s easy, because I love it,” he said at the time. “It’s my life, and that’s all I have ever done. I went through a lot of family problems, so that interrupted things, and I was overseas for four years, and that certainly interrupted things. I went back into radio because I love it.”

Bell was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina, on June 17, 1945. He served in the the U.S. Air Force as a medic during the Vietnam War.

According to the Coast to Coast AM website, Bell was an FCC licensed radio technician at age 13. He also set a Guinness World Record for a solo broadcast marathon, at more than 116 hours, while working as a DJ in Okinawa, Japan, the website said.

I spent many hours in and out of my mind listening to Art during those late night hours during the 90s and beyond. He was one of the AM greats and was truly a master of his craft. Even when you knew the guest was full of shit, Art always made it entertaining. So many times I sat there wishing the show would go on another hour or two because he could make it that interesting. Knowing the right questions to ask and even more importantly, when to ask them

I still play archived shows when falling asleep or catch a stream on TuneIn if I have some driving to do.

RIP

Shit. Nothing I loved more than C2C on low late at night while staring out the window.

Allah be with you Art

The cause of death for radio host Art Bell, famous for his show “Coast to Coast AM” and its "X-Files"-flavored focus on the paranormal, has been revealed as an accidental drug overdose. He was 72.

According to the Nye County Sheriff's office, Bell's death "was the result of multiple drug intoxication from his own lawfully prescribed prescriptions."

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Bell "had four prescription medications in his system: the opioid oxycodone, the analgesic hydrocodone, diazepam, often marketed as Valium, and carisoprodol, a muscle-relaxant."

A view of his headstone, for the curious:

Holy shit, there's a typo.
It should be whose, not who's.
Great job, morons.

Even better, it has the same misspelling on Ramona's:

edit: Beginning to wonder if this is Art trolling from the grave. Maybe Ramona's stone was misspelled on accident and he was too cheap to have it corrected so he did the same to his.

I stopped listening ages ago but I got the impression more that Noorey just doesn't give a shit as long as long you as you run your mouth until it's time to go to break.

When George Noory first took over, I hated him and stopped listening entirely. Then Art came back for a few shows and then had a regular schedule so I started listening again. As time passed and Noory started to put out a few shows that fans would call “good”, I’d download them and listen to them later.

I think that’s just his style as a radio man. He gives you his platform and lets you run with it. I remember him giving an interview and he basically said he didn’t believe hardly anything he heard, but he wanted people to deliver a solid argument and it wasn’t his place to hint that they could be wrong.

Which I honestly don’t find that entertaining unless certain guests are on. I liked the callers more during Art’s run also, but I was a kid back then and listening on a shitty handheld AM radio running on AA batteries.

Noory has his merits, but his show isn’t what I want in a radio show about this sort of thing. Which is totally fine, he knew he wasn’t going to be the next Art and he never tried to be.

My mom didn't start listening until Noory took over. She really liked Noory. He does have a great radio voice. I had listened back when it was Art Bell. My brother introduced me to the show because he and his friend would stay up late laughing at these whack jobs who believed stuff like powering your brain with pyramid hats.

That guy who keeps shilling the face on Mars conspiracy is great. He's crazy. It's not a face. It's just the way shadows are hitting some rocks. There's no pyramids or city ruins on Mars. And there's no glass tower on the moon either.
