Yeah theyre like the new "nerd-cred for putting on your bag or backpack or whatever". Im kind of a sucker for some of them just because I like the designs and theyre smaller and a bit more low key. Theyre also expensive though, probably in part because theyre trendy right now, I got some of the Vinesauce charity ones but those ones at least support their charity stream. Honestly I kind of wanted Null to put some KiwiFarms ones on the merchandise drive he did but I think I didnt actually suggest it or was too late, but yeah, it's the new hip thing: badges, patches and little buttons or different types of pins.

In that respect it kind of makes sense that Arin did what he did with the pins. Yeah it's just some quickly made tumblr stylized design but that's kind of what sells.

Just watch any GameGrumps on a game he doesn't like (watch him freak out over the tiniest things in Ocarina of Time) or Sequelitis to see just how big of an idiot he is. Or just wait for him to tell a really childish joke like he's a comedy genius. He's a giantic sperg and the only reason anybody pays attention to him is because he made popular flash animations that were mildly entertaining if you're 12.

I really don't know how much of that you could possibly put on Arin. He switched from animation to let's play in large part because he makes more money off of putting out large amounts of lower quality content (making jokes with Jon/Dan while sucking at Sonic) than small quantities of high quality stuff (original animations). Since the advent of Game Grumps, Youtube has only made that more true. You can be sad that original Youtube animations are a dying art form, but I'd hardly blame someone like Arin for going with the more financially sensible option.

As for the humor degrading... I mean has it changed all that much? The only real difference I see is being more pandering towards "SJW" types, but again can you really blame him if the core demographic who watches his show is into that sort of thing? Other than that, his shtick was always toilet humor, being pretentious about games while also being terrible at said games, and outright rage for comedic effect. Has that really changed in any fundamental way? I mean I've not seen much at all of the post Jon stuff, but maybe whats happened here is that you aged out of the target demographic more than anything else.

Now in terms of being disappointed by the non-Youtube related stuff, I've no idea as I've not kept up with this dude in ages.

Even though let’s plays might make more fast cash, they're also an over-saturated market and inevitably hit a wall as people grow tired of the same thing every video. And at their peak, Game Grumps was making such a stupid amount of money for such minimal effort that he could churn out a few hours of material and still have a full day for side projects. Especially since it’s not like you can’t make a profit on online animation through other means.

I think the problem is that Arin has always struck me as the unmotivated sort who can’t stick to any sort of structure or schedule and quits the second he faces any difficulty. I recall he once had an opportunity to be a studio animator, but he didn’t even last a year. I doubt he’s even given much consideration to an exit strategy when Game Grumps eventually stops being profitable and other avenues don’t pan out - much like most YT stars.

I always theorized that one of the reasons Jon left was because he and Arin have different work ethics. Arin is clearly comfortable with quantity over quality approach. He can make plenty of money putting out multiple let's play videos everyday that take little effort. Jon on the other hand seems to prefer (or at least he used to) making one video a month that has a substantial amount of time and effort put into it.

I got to say Arin is making a smart move with those little pins. They look pretty basic and cheap to make, but he knows that because he made them there are plenty of die hard fans who will shell out $25 and put up with the blind bag bullshit. To get more sales he should play up a "limited supply" angle for the next batch.

The only resaon he's doing let's plays is because it takes no effort and makes a ton of money. Though even when he was still animating his work ethic was shit. A ton of other people had to do a ton of work in his more recent animations. Yes, he has to take the same approach animation studios use to make high quality high budget 20 minute or feature length shows and movies to make his shitty 7 minute parody animations that he still made 1 of a year, even though he plays vidya for a living.

Differing work ethics was at least part of it since I recall Jon mentioned he’d left to go back to making his videos. And while Jon’s output is slower, the production value has definitely improved and it’s clear from the number of views he gets that his fans don’t mind the wait.

As for the pins, I’m kind of on the fence on how it’ll pan out. On the one hand he might as well try to expand his brand, but on the other mercy can really make or break someone internet famous in my observation - especially if it’s cheap. There’s certainly fans who will pay extra for the name brand recognition, but I’ve noticed that purchasing material goods that turn out to be a piece of junk has a tendency almost half-lives a fan’s enthusiasm for whatever reason. It’s even worse if the vendor goes with a cheap manufacturer and the products turn out to be faulty.

But we’ll probably have to wait and see on that front.

Before this video came out I bought into the idea that Arin's anger was just part of the character, but this changed my mind.

How can anyone find angry screaming funny? Screaming makes me anxious and uncomfortable. It doesn’t seem funny.

When AVGN gets angry and rants he yells but it’s not a real yell—he’s just projecting his voice and sounding aggressive or fed up. You know, acting.

But screaming and throwing a shitfit over a Sonic spin-off boss? Even if you know nothing about Sonic or hate the series it would be hard to find that anything other than cringe and uncomfortable.

I can't be assed to watch the whole video again (That was a chore almost 3 years ago, let alone now), but if you skip to the 17:00 mark you will see Arin's comedy genius... a ghost posses Arin and one of the Super Mega guys into getting almost naked and making out. That it, it's the whole joke.
