My needs are basically just web browsing, and I plan to make YouTube videos, but I don't need to do anything that requires crazy power like 4K video editing.
Well the Neo is actually powerful enough to edit 4K video. So 1080p will be fine.

The Neo is surprising even long term Apple reviewers with its power. Some are editing 4k video with DaVinci and some are playing CyberPunk.

I think this unit has slapped the industry in the face and said, you need to do better.

Also came at a great time; I have not heard a single person say "Yea I really like what Microsoft is doing with Windows 11". The jump to Linux will always be a bridge too far for the majority of users (and myself, Linux will always be the best server, worst daily driver to me). But the affordability and performance of the budget Apple offerings? The average non-gamer might question why they're loyal to Windows.

It's definitely enough to be a good netbook with unix on it.
I mainly wanted it because my T420 is reassigned to homeserver duty for a familymember due to a rotten battery and i still want something to write emails on, and can use git and ssh for work.

Still not going to use Apple for anything else, sorry.

iFixit gave the Neo a 6/10 repairability score. You're stuck with RAM and storage (unless you can solder) obviously but a lot of the parts seem to be replaceable. I'm curious if an aftermarket backlit keyboard is possible as that's the one thing preventing me from getting one for my mom.
A backlit keyboard is more of a battery drain than most people think, so that omission was likely for good reason, given the battery capacity.

Mm. It's at an aggressive price point as well. There's compromises and flaws, but... Apple's going to sell a heap of these things.

Plus some of the cope is amazing.

Some of the laptops suggested by WC as a Neo killer:

Dell Inspirion Copilot+ PC - $799.99
ASUS Zenbook A14 - $999.99
Samsung Galaxy Book4 - $899.99
Acer Aspire 14 AI - $1049.99

(JUST BUY THEM ON A WEEKEND SALE, GUYS!)

If the general public knew the reality that specs don’t map 1:1 between macOS and Windows, nobody would buy a $500 Windows laptop over the Neo.

I don't understand how anyone can, in good faith, recommend a Windows-on-ARM device. Microsoft has seemingly abandoned the platform (for now anyway), and you might unironically be able to run more Windows software using Crossover or Parallels on the Macbook Neo than on one of these things.

I'd rather get cancer than buy another ASUS machine. They just fuckin' die. Like out of the blue.
My grandmother has a Zenbook. It will just occasionally decide that it doesn't want to start up unless you hold down the power button for thirty seconds. There are no battery or power adapter issues causing this. I have it set up to run all Windows updates automatically as well as all ASUS updates. It just decides occasionally not to cleanly shut down/start up. VERY COOL to remotely support

Do ya’ll think the Neo would be able to run autistic map games like CK3 well enough?
For the early game, absolutely. In the very late game, it might noticeably slow down a bit.
Also depends on the particular game. CK3 won't be quite as late-game intensive as Stellaris or Civilization would be.
