It's the tech equivalent of "military grade".
I thought "gaming" was the tech equivalent of "military grade".

Or maybe that's an Apple vs PC thing? Like for PC users, it's "gaming". For Apple, it's "pro".

Anyway, I learned from this video that Apple has been using its signature storage pricing for this product too. That $3,500 price tag is just for the base model Vision Pro with 256 GB.

It costs a further $200 to upgrade it to 512, and $400 for a full terabyte. The same pricing structure that they use on their laptops and iPads, with the same spec prices that they've held across the range for four and a half years.

(Source: 9to5Mac, 9 July 2019)
Let’s take the entry-level 15-inch MacBook Pro, which comes with 256 GB SSD. Before today, a 512 GB upgrade cost $200, the 1 TB SSD cost $600, the 2 TB SSD cost $1,200, and the high-end 4 TB capacity was $3,000. Now, these same upgrades come in at $200, $400, $800, and $1,600.

And assumedly none of these upgrades will be available to already-purchased models. Nor will the Vision Pro support any third-party expansion or have any ports, even though flash storage is dirt cheap nowadays. I myself have a 500-gig flash drive that is the size of a bluetooth dongle. You can leave it in your laptop and forget it's there most of the time. And it only cost me 35 Bri'ish pounds. But if your $3,500 device runs out of space because you actually tried to do work, then for-fucking-get about it!

With this, I've gone from betting on the Vision Pro to fail but thinking it would be kinda cool if it succeeded, to actively rooting for it to fail.

If it had just been a single storage-tier like the Apple TV (reserved for the OS and caches since everything is cloud-based) then maybe 256 GB would be acceptable. But the existence of higher tiers indicates this is a relevant spec, that the base storage won't be enough for some users.

And this is a first-gen product, one that's expected to sell to a handful of die-hards. The component costs of giving everyone a terabyte are basically a rounding error on Apple's balance sheet for the year. That they fail to do even this is just adding insult to the years of injury.

Getting raped on storage is the main reason I haven't bought a newer Mac laptop and why I also don't plan to. Apple didn't lower its prices enough in 2019, and is long overdue for lowering them again. I naively thought Apple Silicon might finally be the excuse they need to sell terabytes at a reasonable price, but no. We are now at the point where a top-of-the-line $3,500 headset from the future has less storage than my cheap-arse flash drive that barely cost 1% of it.

Watched the new Apple Pro tour at work today
https://youtube.com/watch?v=Vb0dG-2huJE
Even without the globohomo presentation it's just extremely low energy presentation for a 3.5K product. No mention of eye strain or heat, which are the biggest issues with every AR goggles. Ditto no talk of battery life, which is pretty important when you market the goggles as "put it during a noisy flight".

Features are barebones, they start with you being able to watch Instagram at a good resolution which is pointless. Ditto "family moments" videos which is ridiculous when the video is built for childless urbanites. You can watch films at a VR landscape which is cool, but again depends on eye strain. It can apperantly interface with laptops but I doubt it can increase productivity since it's just more visual noise (not to mention it will probably only work with macs). No talk of games, because god forbid they associate their products with hateful gamers. Also there is uncanny valley doll version of you if you facetime while connected.

The only cool thing is having an alien surrounding, but of course all the shown areas in the video are boring lakesides. No underwater or on the face of mars.

decades later, and iPhones STILL can't interface correctly with most laptops.
how the fuck can the glasses?

That was the most SOOMER (consoomer) level bs I’ve seen in a while.

Video:
(Rofl, I just saw the thumbnail. So funny he juxtapositions his image with the word 'reality' next to a still from the original ad like his video isn't just another ad for this device too. Lmfao)

MKBHD, being the number one living ad on youtube, will not disappoint. He’s milking this like a good little corporate whore and splitting up his Apple Vision ad across 3 long videos while ignoring any possible big criticism of his technocrat owner’s new cattle herding product and only hinting at the most obvious flaws with the subtlety of a horny drunken college girl. That is to say, not subtle enough for at least half the population. Truly, the technocrats lost touch with people a long time ago. It used to be about delivering products that would make the customer happy and improve their lives in some way. Now it’s all about selling products which will make the advertisers happier by exploiting the consumers in more invasive ways.

Let me break it down for you by getting to the point which MKBHD, Marquees, is gleefully dancing around. TLDRs at the bottom of each section because I’m a retard that can’t be brief.

First, build quality. THIS IS A FOUR THOUSAND DOLLAR DEVICE. And Apple needs you to know it by requiring you to have needless custom head fitting for this product and building it out of heavy, ‘premium’ feeling materials because that’s what the cows have been conditioned to associate with ‘premium.’ How heavy we talking? 600 grams. Because I’m assuming you are a merimutt and don’t understand how to use the metric system let me put that in perspective for you. There existed a very pretty American Audiophile Headphone called the LCD-4, it weighed about the same. Audiophiles don’t listen to music like a commoner does. We sit down with glass of wine in a recliner, ‘warm up’ our amps, and put on our overpriced 4000+ dollar headphones and listen to lossless audio for about 30-minutes to an hour. Even for such a short time, while sitting, in a recliner, with a head strap more or directly on our head above our spines, people bitched constantly about the weight of the LCD-4 to the point that audiophiles wouldn’t buy it and it has been discontinued for lighter, less American-excess feeling headphones. Apple wants you to use this product while standing, walking around, and sitting in un-ergonomic positions. Furthermore, most of the 600 grams of the Apple Vision is going to be strapped to the front of your face, not positioned on your head, over your spine. MKBHD alludes to this is his review, but this is going to be not just physically fatiguing, but will give you significant neck pain if you use this everyday for an hour.

TLDR: This thing weighs 600 grams but will feel more like 1kg because of the dumb ‘premium’ materials it's made out of to help justify its high price tag in the consoomer’s mind along with most of that weight being centered in front of the wearer's eyes.

Next, how does it look and feel to use it. The front display is dim, and it looks like the digital eyes aren’t quite aligned with your eyes on your head which makes it very uncanny. He mentions it’s the best ‘passthrough’ in a VR headset by a wide margin, but that isn’t saying much since the passthrough function on most VR headsets is awful. To be clear, this isn’t a true passthrough. You are looking at two screens which then display what cameras see on the device of your environment. I don’t really know how to interpret MKBHD saying it’s the best when so many of these devices are just terrible. He was able to play ping pong (real life ping pong) while wearing the device although his movements looked a little awkward while doing so. So, I trust it’s pretty good. However, that won’t save you from eye fatigue. With the goggles strapped to your head, wearing this for more than 30 minutes at a time will cause massive eye fatigue. This isn’t a professional device. I can’t imagine actual professionals who stare at monitors all day would think this would be comfortable. It’s so important to take frequent but small eye breaks while working so by the end of an 8-hour day, your eyes aren’t ready to fall out of your head. Accordingly, Marquees doesn’t pretend (much) like it is. His ‘work’ use case for these headphones is for editing videos on a flight without drawing attention to himself. Even then, I’m sure these will be very uncomfortable. Marquees also mentions that the real world placing of digital items is very good. Importantly, he only shows the placement of 3d items while remaining mostly still. I wouldn’t expect this to hold up well with lots of movement but maybe that’s saved for his next hour viewer milking session video. You interact with the objects via looking at them. He says the eye tracking is good and pinching your fingers in a white power gesture. You can type with just the pointer finger of each hand, with the gesture and your eye gaze, or with voice recognition which he prefers the most. He doesn’t show the device connecting to a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse. Nor does he show it smartly working with an apple iphone like you would expect Samsung DEX to work with 3rd party monitors. VR videos and environments are neat, nothing new but there is a new proprietary apple video format made specifically for Apple Vision. Speaking of which, this dumb device is filled with proprietary shit. That’s really nothing new for an Apple product, however.

TLDR: Front display looks dumb, eye tracking is precise, hand gesture recognition is good, passthrough is fatiguing, lots of apple proprietary bs. Marquees didn’t show the device interfacing with bluetooth mice or keyboards. No smart integration showed with devices ala Samsung DEX.

Now, the part you were waiting for. What’s the ‘killer apps.’ LMAO will get ready for it consooomer cattle her comes feeding time!

w-BcP_.gif

Feel like a worthless broke peasant who isn’t successful, works to pay debt, and just consooms all day with what little is left???? WELL now you can pretend to be a technocrat! Isn’t that so neat. For example, you can see what it would be like if a multimillion-dollar race car were in YOUR living room WOWWWWWW. Online shopping is going to be so immersive guys. Now that’s enough fun, to earn such an amazing race car you ofc must work for a living! So, lets practice your next productivity report in. Wait for it. STEVE JOBS EMPTY AUDITORIUM. O. M. G. It’s almost like you aren’t a soul sucked dry consoomer dirt poor peasant stuck is a dystopia hell (Marquees even mentions the device is dystopian, lmfao). Wow that was a lot of fun. But you had too much fun and were late delivering your productivity report. So now you must have a zoom call with your bosses so they can decide if they are going to fire you. But UH OH! You forgot to comb your hair, brush your teeth, put on makeup, etc. In fact, you forgot to put on clean clothes too. Big oof guys, what are you going to do? Wait, you have the new cattle goggles. You are fine. The device scans your face to create a 3d uncanny valley avatar of yours. Lucky for you, you did this while you were having a 5-star day last week. So, you boot up the zoom call and show your fake, well groomed, 3d avatar to your bosses and still get fired for being a useless retard. Oh well, back to the job hunt so you can pay off your debt, ell ooohhh ellll.

TLDR: The killer apps are literally viewing 3d models in your house for online shopping or larping purposes, practicing work presentations in steve job’s auditorium, and being able to do zoom calls while you look unpresentable because of the 3d scanned avatar you can show of yourself.

Finally, what is this actually going to be used for. Ad research. The advertisers are the actual consumers ofc. They cucked you out of the customer position and are sucking the fun and joy out of all the things you used to enjoy consooming. They really are vampire parasites which ruin literally everything. I’ll go ahead and read between the lines for you here because ofc Marquees doesn’t bite the hand that feeds. The device can very precisely monitor your eye gaze. This alone will be a big boom for advertising companies. Measuring how long your gaze sticks onto a particular ad. They will use this to discover ways to better disguise ads on platforms, to make it harder for you resist seeing ads. But that’s not invasive enough. It has cameras which can see your environment. As if having a driver monitoring car, and a listening device in your home wasn’t invasive enough. I won’t harp on this because it’s not unique to Apple Vision. What is unique is expression monitoring. Remember the zoom call avatar? It works by monitoring your facial expressions to mirror it on your 3d avatar. Maybe even microexpressions. That means when a Disney ad, for example, plays and you smile like the good little consoomer cow you are, the advertisers will be able to associate their disguised ad with your natural emotional response. This is a wet dream for market researchers. On the one hand, they’ll be able to directly perform research on how engaging their ads are on a real customer base with no ethic committee oversight. On the other, via the cameras, mics, and eye tracking, they will be able to get a load of new information about your environment to further build your advertiser profile to sell to others. You may think, “No big deal. I just won’t buy Apple Vision, this won’t affect me.” That’s not the point. It would be great ofc for everyone to have an advertiser slave collar strapped over their eyes, but even if they don’t. The ads they develop to be more effective on Apple Vision consumers will be used to draw correlations with ad profiles not made with Apple Vision. In other words, the ads researched and developed on apple vision will be coming to the rest of us.

TLDR: This is an advertising researcher’s wet dream. In addition to using the microphones and cameras to build a better ad profile on customers, they’ll be able to track and monitor not just your time spent looking at each ad which pops up, but also your facial expression responses to those ads. This is the real customer of Apple Vision. Do not be fooled.

The passthrough quality of the Apple Vision Pro ($3500) and the Meta Quest 3 ($499) are nearly identical in a well-lit room. It's criminal that Apple can even sell a product that's pitch is "you can watch movies, but with spatial computing :tm:". The Apple Vision Pro will be a failure no matter how many delusional iToddlers buy it because the key to commercial VR/AR success is software support. Apple has none of that, and they're banking on the fact that their target demographic is fucking retarded and will buy whatever cheap gimmick they produce. Case in point:

Expect the Vision Pro to be sold on eBay for next to nothing. I just don't understand how a trillion dollar company could get this wrong. They don't offer PCVR support like the Quest 3, there is no OpenXR support so any existing developer has to completely retool to Apple's proprietary Swift language which will never happen. It's a very expensive ViewFinder. Apple has such a stick up their ass with their walled garden philosophy in a market that requires as much software / hardware support as possible. Meta is already struggling to bring developers onto the platform (when your killer app is Gorilla Tag you know you might need a new business strategy) and Apple is going to realize this the hard way, because despite trillions of dollars I guess they don't do market research anymore. That's a racist practice from a bygone era where white men ruled the world.

Apple consumers are not known for being price-sensitive and tend to like their walled garden. This is just iPhone all over again ("it's too expensive", "it doesn't support flash", "you can't even connect to a standard windows PC", "you have to develop apps using Objective-C instead of [popular language]", etc.)

I don't think you're necessarily wrong, but consumers are not us.

I fucking needed someplace to talk about this and this thread is good enough.
CGP gray has this podcast with a faggot I don't know the name of.
In this podcast, they talk about Apple vision pro, I thought I was getting a tech review but instead got the most soy thing ever where they suck apple's dick like it's the only thing keeping them alive.
The faggot in the video talks about watching avengers end game in a fake avenger's room in VR
and I shit you not he calls it a "religious experience", I had to stop, it was too much soy

Yeah, that's pretty much what his podcast is. I tried listening a long time ago and the newest episode at the time was all about him and some pretentious British guy carrying on and on about the different organizer apps they use. Even that was insufferable.

The podcast he did before the current one, Hello Internet, was a lot more grounded thanks to Brady Haran being relatively normal. There was one episode where Brady offered to lend Grey a DVD, and Grey humblebragged about not owning a single thing on which he could play a DVD. This was over a decade ago, when DVD drives and players were still commonplace. He's really into being a pretentious minimalist, and he doesn't seem to really have any real problems in his life. That guy lives a mile and a half up his own ass.

Hey! The homopod can at least be used as a Bluetooth speaker kinda.

The Vision Pro is like the ultimate consooomer product, as apparently it sucks ass for rendering virtual screens (like 1080p or so quality and fuzzy).

Iphone exploded because it solved problems. Initially, phone + camera + GPS in your pocket was useful. Now, what thing can I not currently do, or is painful to do, does Vision Pro enable me to do? All the examples so far have been gay.

Is it a complete waste of time to attempt to use software that allows you to play PC games on mac? Im getting a base level M2 mac mini as a glorified smart TV and it would be nice to have the option. Im buying the stupid thing no matter what, I was just wondering how retarded it is to go down that rabbit hole.

Wonder if Steam remote play would work to stream games via the local network from a main gaming pc.

Not a complete waste but to get anything good you'd have to pay for (or crack) crossover or parallels for a decent experience, local streaming is a good option as the above poster suggested so long as you have a decent home network setup and don't mind running both machines at once

Yes it’s a complete waste of your time to play video games.

For a typical normie, no. For someone jaded, yes.
