I really hate the fact that if you forgot the passcode to your phone, the only option is to wipe everything and start again. Like is there not another option to log in?

You usually have to wipe everything but you can often restore your cloud backups if you have access to the relevant Google or Apple account. Of course, this won't include some security critical info such as online banking app cookies etc because that is excluded from backups.

But yes, there isn't another option. If there was another way around this, it would work for bad guys also, as there's a lot of critical stuff on most peoples' phones and this is often the last line of defence for most of it.

Meanwhile on android, I am downloading apps straight from the web browser. :gunt:
Meanwhile on iOS I am enjoying a quality handset that doesn't stop receiving security updates 18 months after I buy it, and user interfaces that don't look like a computer science grad's final year project.

I suppose I hadn't considered stock Android. Here's my primary experience with Android: A few years ago I had to write some code for some Android app and my company gave me an Android tablet and honestly it was the biggest piece of shit ever. It was a high-end Samsung tablet and they installed all their shitware, assistants, every 10 minutes some loud piano playing notification would fire to notify me about some facebook bullshit (you can't even remove the fucking facebook app, what the fuck)? I had agreed to use it in the place of my iPad for a while to get a feel for how the UIs should work but it was so fucking poor I couldn't even do that.

I got the job done, handed it over to a different team, and now I use it as a coaster for my coffee mug. It even has some rebranded Google Chrome called Samsung Internet. Who the fuck does that unironically?

Coding UIs for Android is nice, but overengineered (do you really need a transactional UI update system?)

Good point, but please use some punctuation.

Samsung is the shittiest manufacturer, the other ones are varying degrees of shittified, and the Pixels are literally as close to stock Android as you can get because they're made by Google. As a bonus, I hear that unlocking the bootloader on Pixels is also remarkably easy.

About iMessage Contact Key Verification

iMessage Contact Key Verification provides additional security by helping to detect sophisticated threats against iMessage servers and allowing you to verify that you’re only messaging the people you intend to.
Saw a new setting in iCloud, not sure if this is a gimmick or it’s a response iMessage being cracked by that 16 year old but sounds like it has potential to fuck off all the SMS spam I get from Pajeets about my packages being lost.

Sorry, SMS is a different protocol to iMessage. You can think of iMessage as basically WhatsApp or Signal but for iOS only*. The only way to reduce spam from distracting you is still to put your phone on a focus mode where all your contacts can call and texts but everything else is ignored.

* There is an unofficial Android app called Beeper Mini that reverse engineered the iMessage protocol which Apple are trying to shut down. Probably this contact key thing is part of it as I'm guessing it requires some complex cryptography to implement and it'll change from time to time, affecting Beeper Mini.

the solution is stop texting and get a fliphone

The latest version of macOS makes it mandatory to use the latest version of xcode, and there is no option to downgrade. There's a trick to getting older versions to launch, but I generally don't like doing tricks or hacks to get things to work. I get a successful build maybe 1/10 times I use xcode 15, and it honestly feels like I'm QAing the product more than using it. The official apple support threads give me file system urls of caches to try deleting to no avail, and I can't believe this is /the way/ to write apps supported for Apple devices. Apple FUBAR.
xcode is in such desperate need of attention right now. It's serviceable but it feels so barebones compared to a JetBrains IDE, and most of it still feels firmly stuck in the late-2000s.

NY Times really wants normies to own Apples for some reason. Seems to be literally all they're recommending.

My (possibly unpopular) take: If you're a normie and you don't need gaming capabilities, you'll be much better served by some flavor of Apple computer. The extra money you spend is worth it to not have to think, because computer people's time is expensive.

The only real caveat is that Apple is retarded and keeps speccing their low-end to be normie-hostile with only 8 GB of RAM. Even if the OS is optimized, it isn't going to cut it when Twitter is using almost a gig of memory for a handful of tabs:

That’s my use case. I’m not interested in gaming but my industry has always used macOS as standard so I’m used to them. Hell my primary school used Apple products so they got to me young. My hobbies also need a pretty beefed up machine and I’ve had zero issues since getting a specced out MacBook Pro M2 Max that I use for work and hobbies.

Watched the new Apple Pro tour at work today

Even without the globohomo presentation it's just extremely low energy presentation for a 3.5K product. No mention of eye strain or heat, which are the biggest issues with every AR goggles. Ditto no talk of battery life, which is pretty important when you market the goggles as "put it during a noisy flight".

Features are barebones, they start with you being able to watch Instagram at a good resolution which is pointless. Ditto "family moments" videos which is ridiculous when the video is built for childless urbanites. You can watch films at a VR landscape which is cool, but again depends on eye strain. It can apperantly interface with laptops but I doubt it can increase productivity since it's just more visual noise (not to mention it will probably only work with macs). No talk of games, because god forbid they associate their products with hateful gamers. Also there is uncanny valley doll version of you if you facetime while connected.

The only cool thing is having an alien surrounding, but of course all the shown areas in the video are boring lakesides. No underwater or on the face of mars.

Otherwise, the only thing they are proved to be good at is to cater to the braindead Apple shills thirsting for a new Apple product. Especially those teenagers, and Apple is real fucking good at making them shill like blind sheeps.

I hate when they call something "whatever PRO" when there is literally no professional use for it whatsoever.
