ATLANTA (AP) — Authorities said they killed a man who shot and injured a Georgia state trooper Wednesday morning as law enforcement officers tried to clear protesters from the site of a planned Atlanta-area public safety training center that activists have dubbed “Cop City.”

Officers from several law enforcement agencies were conducting an operation to clear people out of the area around 9 a.m. when someone fired at them and officers shot back in self-defense, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Mike Register said during a news conference. A trooper was shot in the abdomen and the man who shot at the officers was killed at the scene, Register said.

The trooper was rushed to a hospital, where he underwent surgery, Georgia State Patrol Col. Chris Wright told reporters. The trooper’s vital signs are good and he’s in stable condition, but he is in the intensive care unit and “he’s still not out of the woods yet,” Wright said.

Register and Wright declined to identify the trooper or the man who was killed, citing the active investigation and the need to notify family members.

Register said the “clearing operation” was being conducted in the same area where a handful of people were arrested last month and charged with domestic terrorism. DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston said at the time that people attacked firefighters and police officers with rocks and weapons as the officers removed barricades blocking some entrances to the site.

The GBI and other law enforcement agencies “embrace a citizen’s right to protest, but law enforcement can’t stand by while serious criminal acts are being committed that jeopardize the safety of the citizens we’re sworn to protect,” Register said.

People are “illegally occupying” the area and are committing criminal acts that endanger the community, including arson, beating people up, using explosives and setting booby traps that have the potential to seriously hurt someone, he said.

Register said four people had been detained with possible charges to come and that the situation remains fluid.

More than 150 people gathered to mourn the man’s death during a candlelight vigil Wednesday evening in Atlanta’s Little Five Points neighborhood, an area known as a hub for counterculture movements.

Activists said they did not have much information about the morning’s incident and did not know the identity of the person who was killed. But they called for an investigation into the shooting, urging the public and the media to reject the police “narrative” that officers were shooting in self-defense.

The group then took to the streets, blocking a busy intersection and throwing scooters in front of cars as others held a large banner reading, “Trees give life. Police take it.”

“Stop Cop City!” the group yelled, followed by, “If you build it, we will burn it!”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp released a statement earlier this month applauding the earlier arrests and saying “they will not be the last we will take down as this project moves forward.”

“Domestic terrorism will NOT be tolerated in our state, and we will not hesitate, we will not rest, we will not waver in ending their activities and prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law,” he said in the statement posted on Twitter.

Opponents of the training center have been protesting for over a year by building platforms in surrounding trees and camping out at the site. They say that the $90 million project, which would be built by the Atlanta Police Foundation, involves cutting down so many trees that it would be environmentally damaging. They also oppose investing so much money in what they call “Cop City,” which they say will be used to practice “urban warfare.”

The 85-acre (35-hectare) property is owned by the city of Atlanta but is located just outside the city limits in unincorporated DeKalb County, and includes a former state prison farm.

In an email to news outlets Wednesday morning, opponents of the training facility said they gathered outside the DeKalb County courthouse on Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, to demand that Boston drop the charges against people who were arrested at the site on Dec. 13 and 14. They “spoke about how the movement to stop cop city continues Atlanta’s history of resistance to state violence,” the email says.

They're half my age, but, have less hair than me...... those are some HARD twentysomethings, probably spent the entirety of their life from 16 - CURRENT YEAR on various recreational substances, shall we say?
Al Fucking Bundy looked healthier and younger than that 29-year-old and he was married with children.

It seems obvious to me that this person attempted 1st degree murder with the full assent and cooperation of the people present and every AntiFA online who is lying and attempting to cover it up. RICO the lot of them.
In a sane world with competent law enforcement and a sense of justice, RICO probably would be an effective tool to bring down most of their network at once. Sadly we live in clown world so I half expect Biden to personally apologize for the actions of those evil fascist right winger cops.

You don't own "Rest in Power" and "Say Her Name," but look on the bright side. You still have exclusive rights to Jigaboo, Liver Lips, Tar Baby, Spook, Spade, Spearchucker, Yard Ape, Jungle Bunny, Porch Monkey, and Sunburned Italian.

Also, I don't expect things to go well for Antifa in Georgia. Atlanta is chock-full of Yankees and dindus, but the Atlanta city government doesn't have a lot of control over the Georgia State Police who are handling this situation. And the GSP is full of good ole boys who will happily provide ass-whuppins to those who are in dire need of attitude readjustment.

And "Smoked Irishman." Don't forget that one!

Can I just say how fucking infuriating after multiple attacks on police officers, arson, rampant vandalism and probably murder that Antifa and other "anarchist" groups are referred to as "protestors" in headlines? They're rioters at best and more realistically domestic terrorists and should be labelled as such.

Realistically yes, but the Mansionsheviks have very expensive attorneys on hand, and there's enough of them that strings can get pulled to make sure nothing happens behind the scenes.

(Yes, I'm stealing that term because its just too damn good.)

Right up to the point where they shot a police officer. I suspect that will be a big game-changer regarding how GSP relates to the protesters, no matter how many screeching monkey tantrums Atlanta City Council engages in.
Black Dems won't give two shits about the bunch of screeching out-of-state faggots and headcases that make up antifa. So long as the gibs flow to their voters, they couldn't care less.

People also forget that there's a quiet schism between black activists who are mostly grifters spouting 60s era communist radical tropes, and antifa, who profess various flavors of anarchism, but in reality couldn't tell Kropotkin from Bookchin. Black activists dislike the freakish danger-haired troon and faggot brigade who come mostly from money, and antifa dislike how cynical and often socially conservative (relatively speaking, as they're still Marxists, but generally aren't down with the grooming shit that's front and center with antifa) black activists can be.

Mayor, police chief: Atlanta ‘will not tolerate’ violent protests

What started as a peaceful protest at Underground Atlanta on Saturday evening apparently turned violent when marchers headed downtown, with a police car afire and business windows broken.

At a news conference Saturday night, Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum said they arrested six people who “chose to take the First Amendment as a shield of illegal activity, and we stopped the protesters that were acting illegally.”

Earlier in the night, Atlanta police told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that a group of people were damaging property at several locations along Peachtree Street. At the news conference, Schierbaum said no one was injured, and that three buildings and one police car were damaged.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist or an attorney to tell you that breaking windows and setting fires is not protests. That is terrorism,” Schierbaum said. “And they will be charged accordingly.”

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens thanked public safety officials for working together to restore order “in a swift manner.” He said at the news conference that authorities confiscated explosives from some of the arrested demonstrators.

“The city of Atlanta and the Atlanta Police Department will not tolerate this, and we continue to protect the right to peacefully protest. We will not tolerate violence or property destruction,” Dickens said. “My message is simple to those who seek to continue this type of criminal behavior: We will find you and we will arrest you and you will be held accountable.”

MARTA announced during the time of the violence that trains were not servicing Peachtree Center Station. Meanwhile, one of the buildings damaged was the Atlanta Police Foundation, which had its glass doors smashed open with rocks. The APF declined to comment.

The property damage in downtown Atlanta occurred about an hour after dozens of protesters filled a portion of an Underground Atlanta plaza to protest against the city’s plans to build a training center for police and firefighters within several acres of forested land in DeKalb County.

The event also was held to remember 26-year-old activist Manuel Teran, who was fatally shot by a state trooper at the project’s site this past week.

During the event, the protesters chanted “no justice, no peace, no killer police,” and “stop cop city,” referring to the name that activists have given to the planned training site. They also chanted “stop police terror,” “free the activists” and “drop the charges,” referring to how at least seven other people have been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism in connection with Wednesday’s law enforcement operation in the southern DeKalb woods.

One person present unsuccessfully tried to start a chant of “if they build it, we will burn it.”

Teran was killed during Wednesday’s police sweep in what the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said was an exchange of gunfire with police that wounded a state trooper. The trooper, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital for surgery and is reported to be in stable condition. The GBI also said there was not bodycam footage of the incident.

But several unnamed speakers at Saturday’s protest spoke of Teran as a freedom fighter who hugged everyone amid their efforts to be kind and giving to the community. The speakers accused the media and the police of distorting what happened and hiding the shooting footage.

The police foundation is leasing the land where the city is building the training center. The nonprofit is also spearheading the $90 million project, for which the AFP is contributing two-thirds of the construction funds.

Several protesters at Saturday’s event at Underground Atlanta told the AJC that the city is misusing that money.

“We have a bunch of homeless people here in Atlanta,” said 24-year-old resident Ronald Conde. “There’s big disparity in income and housing, so why are we putting all our time and effort and money into a facility that is there to provide training for police to basically raid homes?”

In addition to seeking the end of the project, the protesters at the afternoon event are calling for an independent probe into Teran’s death. They also want the city to defund the APD.

On Saturday night, amid the destruction downtown, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr tweeted that the media should not label the damage as a protest.

“Peaceful protestors use words. Rioters smash windows, set police cars on fire & shoot law enforcement officers,” Carr tweeted. “Stop calling these people protesters.”

The governor also went on social media to speak out.

“Violence and unlawful destruction of property are not acts of protest,” Gov. Brian Kemp said. “They are crimes that will not be tolerated in Georgia and will be prosecuted fully.”

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff released a statement Saturday night. The Georgia Democrat said, “Peaceful protest is a sacred Constitutional right but violence is unacceptable, cannot be permitted or tolerated, and must cease immediately.”

A note of disclosure
The James M. Cox Foundation, the charitable arm of Cox Enterprises which owns The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, has contributed to the training center fundraising campaign. It is among several Atlanta-based foundations that have contributed.

These kinds of people, groups and causes makes it really hard to care even if they were telling the truth about the shooting. Since they basically want their own kind of police state where certain types of criminals get to do what they want and everyone else gets to be told what to do.

I cringe at the term "peaceful protest" now. It was never meant to be peaceful from the start.

Can't reply, but from @notafederalagent above,

...group of people were damaging property at several locations along Peachtree Street.

Le sigh. The Atlanta PD missed a golden opportunity to meme themselves into legendary status, right thar...

Inhabitants of Peachtrees... Antifa is not the law; I am the law. And I still demand a sequel, drokk it!

So Late Winter of Love 2023?...

Maybe more "peaceful protests" news footage while the city is burning around the announcer? That redpilled a lot of people.

I'm wondering how people like that are treated in prisons? Would they end up in high security prisons for violent criminals? Would they have to suck bubba's cock for protection?

Depends on what they get convicted of. Keep in mind, 'jail' is where you go when you're awaiting trial or it's in progress. 'Prison' is where you go to serve your time.

If Georgia throws the book at them, then yeah, they could end up pulling hard time. It'll be interesting to see if that's what happens.

Keep an eye out for GoFundMes wanting lawyers fees to bail them out. That is, if the DAs wouldn't just give them a slap on the wrist.

That's assuming they don't get their charges dropped, or they don't have the National Lawyers' Guild get them probation or sent to a minimum-security country club prison.
