This time in Northern Miami. Some kid with tism wanders away from his group home and his wrangler goes to get him. The kid is holding a toy truck that someone saw and thought was a weapon. Cops come and make the them get on the ground.

Guy gets on his back, hands up and just after the video cuts out gets shot in the leg. He'll live but the PD does not need something like this after the past few weeks. At this point we should just have a mega thread on black people getting shot by police and police getting killed by blacks.

Adrenaline and fear can make you do some absolutely batshit things sometimes. The rational mind says "don't do anything else or you might get hurt again" while the fear-drenched instinct says "SAFETY RUN GET AWAY NO MATTER WHAT FUCK EVERYONE ELSE."

...not saying that handcuffing the poor guy after shooting him wasn't some kind of fucked up icing on this towering cake of stupid the cops were baking, though.
 
Even corpses get cuffed, its just SOP. More than a few guys have gotten shot by people they thought were dead. Better safe than sorry.

This was just a bad situation, thank god the guy will recover and sue the hell out of everyone.

They really are. I think lack of training/awareness is a huge part of why the mentally ill and disabled are at such a risk of police violence. I know disability advocacy groups push for better training big-time.

A lot of severely mentally ill people freak out in public, the real ones not the Tumblrinas, and they can't help it. Certainly does not mean cops should shoot them which has happened before. Unless someone's life is endangered, which is normally very rare from what I've experienced, then no force should be used at all.

Cops just need more training in general, they're too stuck on old ways sadly.

Yeah, statistically the mentally ill are no more likely to be violent than the general population (though they are more likely to be victims of violence). There's also the fact that many of these people don't have access to treatment, and end up on the streets or worse.

Police need more training, and the mentally ill need better access to help.
 
My supervisor told me about this at work and it's like wtf? I don't think the kid was raging or anything so there'd be no reason to shoot him. All this shit is getting out of hand

I love statements like this from neckbearded civvies who've never had to deal with any of the shit cops have to deal with coming up with statements like "cops are undertrained"

What do you, or all of the others who made statements like this here in the last couple of months even know about police training

This is a ridiculous assumption.

I have dealt with cops before. I called them up because my drug addicted neighbor was going crazy and trying to break through my appartment door.

The cops were incredibly late by 30 minutes, my door was busted and by the time they came my neighbor had already passed out and pissed himself.

They just need a overhaul of training in general, my life was in danger and it was really fucking scary. I'm lucky he eventually passed out but I'm still mad to this day that cops were really late.

I'm powerleving a lot I'm sorry, but that was a ridiculous assumption you made dude.
 
So your qualifications to decide what is proper training or not is that you've called the cops for what turned out to be a non life threatening emergency and they took a long time to come and it was already over so they did nothing? And that makes you qualified to talk about their training and how it should be modified to make it better?

I'm not going to argue with you but again your making a lot of assumptions. I didn't want to powerlevel too much dude.

I locked myself up in my bathroom while that was happening, I calmly explained everything and yet they were still late for some absurd reason. Cops in my area are freaking lazy, it's ridiculous.

I can't afford a gun, you realize they aren't cheap to own at all right? I barely make it by as it is, I cannot afford training or even buying one right now.

Is there any other self defence weapon that you can get to scare off the crazy?
 
After that incident I did buy mace, problem is that you have to be in close range and it's not that threatening to people.

I looked into self defense classes but they're all at inconvenient times for me, I work bad enough hours as it is.
 
I'm a clod with guns so I got one of those big "spiked metal ball on a chain connected to a stick" maces. It wrecked the fuck out of some plastic buckets so I probably have as good a chance with that as anything else.

Flail maces are generally pretty bad weapons for a number of reasons. Depending on the length of the chain, they can easily be more dangerous to the wielder than their opponent. A standard mace without the chain is a far better option and far easier to wield.

Something like a baseball bat or other blunt object should work fine against a drug addled idiot. Granted, if the drugs they use make them resistant to pain, you might have a bit of a harder time.

Reinforcing your door is also a good option. Keep in mind that even if the door itself is a nice solid wood door, the weak point is often the thin piece of wood holding the locking bolt into the door jamb. Here's a page from Instructables.com from a guy that did it all DIY, showing what I mean. Of course there are plenty of pre-made kits available out there if you don't want to build it yourself.

There are plenty of options to scare off crazy, depending on the situation and if you're willing to be crazy yourself. The website http://www.kultofathena.com/ sells all manner of medieval weaponry, and unlike most places, much of it is of usable quality, some quite cheap too. Much of the stuff marked as "Battle Ready" can actually be used. It helps if you know what to actually look for in a quality weapon, but the site one of the most honest I've seen.

For something a little less ridiculous, baseball bats, golf clubs, table legs, canes with a heavy metal knob on top, and so on are all good choices.

cool tips
I'll rely on my bludgeon weapon (a heavy mic stand on a re-enforced stick) then, at least until I can finish my tactical scythe.
