Decided I wanted to try watching some old romcoms and ended up picking School Rumble. Just wondering if anyone has experience with it and whether or not anime or manga is the better choice?
So far I've only watched the first episode subbed and it was pretty funny imo (and side note its been awhile since I've watched something with translators notes in it) and some of the scan I've skimmed through online seem a bit iffy.

Manga if you want to see what happens next. They never made a third season which I find a mistake that OVA don’t count, I felt a third season would be better as I feel second season was a bit too average. School Rumble Z manga, you could check it out but it’s a bit contentious to it’s hardcore fans. The mangaka has a YouTube channel if you’re interested


Dude could play guitar. It attracted a lot of the hardcore Western fans that keep asking for a continuation as they were unsatisfied with the way it ended. Yeah like most fandoms they could get a bit crazy at least they’re not the fans of Darling in the Franxxx that threatened the creator.
 
You know, it is pretty interesting that anime has really grown in popularity to the point of it overtaking a lot of Western animation in terms of viewership, with a few exceptions for the latter. Especially given, just last decade you had people making videos like this.




Given how much the medium has grown over the past years, what do you think of the points this guy made? I know he caused a bit of a stir when he posted these rants in the past.

As far as I'm concerned, the ending of Z was Correct.

Yeah that ending is why Z is contentious. It was a bit confusing if half of it was a future vision or just an imagination. And while on topic School Rumble was one of those series that had a lot of shippings and shipping wars an they even gave nicknames for each of them, especially when this site was active:


You should've seen them, and some of the weird ideas for fanfics. Also I think some people blamed fansubbing for not having a season 3. I recall that particular website receiving multiple cease and desist warnings. On a related note, before that Cuties controversy, I think BlackCriticGuy was planning something School Rumble related:

This week's episode of Vivy:

It seems the reveal is that Vivy's song kickstarted the androids insanity. The question is if anything can be salvaged or she's going to go back in time and off herself.
 
I enjoy how progressively more fucked Thunderbolt Fantasy gets with every episode and fondly anticipate when Edgeless Blade finally gets to fight basically every living character in the show from the first 2 seasons with thunderBOLTfantasy swelling in the background.

Man, when the post-credits scene played and all the other androids were singing her song in a different key, that gave me chills. I'm really interested to see how this plays out.

If my memory is correct, Hige/Ojou have kids, Tenma studies to be a doctor so she can find a cure for Karasuma's condition, Menma becomes a mangaka. So Flag + True Oudou (sorta).
 
I know absolutely nothing about anime nor manga and i have nothing but contempt for weebs, but i'm tired of consooming media from people that hate my guts and my money

What would be a good introduction for both anime and manga? Does Dragon Ball Z count?

Depends on what type of media you enjoy outside of anime.
Although if your just contemptuous for weebs I might recommend two options
Normie option: look up to see what's been popular with people who don't usually watch anime the past 5-10 years and go from there.
Movie Option: stick with movies since a) the "weeb" elements of some tend to be played down or overshadowed, b) if you end up watching a bad one your just wasting 1.5-2 hours instead of slogging through a show that can be anywhere from 12 to 50+ episodes.

Yes. Dragonball Z counts. It is what got many people into anime/manga.

It also depends on what you are looking for.

In general, I find Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood to be the best introduction in general to anime/manga. At least for me. It is also one of my favorite anime with a great English dub. I introduced many people to anime with Brotherhood.

If you are looking for a dark fantasy adult manga to read, "Berserk" would be the one. It is what got me into manga to begin with. R.I.P Kentaro Miura.

There are many recommendations people can give. But, those two are always my recommendations to people just starting out into Anime/Manga.

Got a couple questions tho

I keep reading that Berserk's author died, and some people say he never finished the story, is there a good place to stop reading or something? It'll break my heart to not have any closure if i get invested in it.

Also, i remember watching a couple episodes of Kill la Kill, enjoyed the action and fast pace but found some of the characters annoying, is there anything else similar to that or DBZ?

Dragon Ball Z is a huge time investment and you might hate it if you already hate anime, though it's got a universal charm so who knows. If the anime is too slow for you try the manga. If you want something without many anime tropes Read Berserk and Vagabond if you want to be impressed by comic art, Monster is really good too but the art isn't quite as amazing. Also do what vern said and watch standalone movies. I'd recommend Akira, Angel's Egg, Jin Roh the Wolf Brigade, and Nausicaa. Akira is an especially common starter anime movie for good reason. Cowboy Bebop too it's a series but it's short, well dubbed, and constantly entertaining.

Gurren Lagann, It's amazing. KLK is the same guys trying to recapture the magic but not quite getting there. If you want fighting superpower series there's a ton of stuff like that it just depends on what you want. Yu Yu Hakusho is my favorite but there's tons of different ones.

Gotta clarify i have watched most of DBZ lol, its almost a religion where i live, every single boy in school gathered at a friend's house to watch the Frieza episodes, havent watched in a while but i loved it as a kid

The girlfriend suggests Soul Eater, what do you guys think about that one?

The Berserk anime covers the first bit of the manga and ends there. I say give that a watch and if it catches your interest enough, read the manga.

Seconding the Gurren Lagann recommendation.
