- The Shape of things to Koom -
Update on the Koomer-san front:

Apparently the studio doing the animeee is the same one that did the OG Berserk anime in the 90s which is pretty neat.

Also Teaser just dropped that shows off some of the animation

So on a twitter post, whom I won't link as the guy isn't a lolcow or really horrible or anything, he was having a fight with anime/manga fans who were talking about how Manga is kicking Western Comic's asses in sales for obvious reasons, and a bunch of people even claimed that Anime/Manga was no less woke than western entertainment (one guy even used fucking Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop as examples). While even if there is a grain of truth to that, they are definitely no where near the insanity of the left in America these days, to the point I think the guy who said that was trolling, but I do see this weird sentiment pop up quite often and it annoys me. Almost as if people actually don't mind left leaning ideas and thought, just when it goes insane it's a problem.

It was due to "post-modernism" apparently, which I do see in Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, but even then it's not an issue and isn't pushing a really fucked up agenda.

Anyway, the main thing I wanted to say is; Why not ask WHY Manga is selling so much better than Western Comics? Like...I mean from my point of view, isn't it just a sign that Manga is giving people something that they want, while western comics are just devoid of what people want and are generally miserable and ugly to look at?

This is of course referring to the Big Two, DC and Marvel. Not indies or French Comics.

Being Woke is not the same as being progressive.

The defining aspect of wokesped shit is crowbarring in various progressive sounding buzzwords and narratives and aesthetic shit and loudly and obnoxiously shouting about this to everyone in earshot as an especially shallow gimmick to cover for the laziest and most uninspired trash quality imaginable, and as a cynical way for the creators to look marketably trendy and to maximise positive reviews from mouthbreathing critics even if that shit is so unpopular among actual people it bankrupts the producers.

An example that immediately comes to mind are the differences between the three star wars trilogies with regards to black representation.

The OG trilogy has a black main character introduced halfway through who is a suave and extremely adept leader and pilot who winds up destroying the second death star as well as being one of the key leaders in the final battle of the trilogy.

This was treated in and out of universe as entirely natural and expected and nobody involved in the production made a big deal about it.

The prequel trilogy has the highest ranking Jedi outside yoda being a black guy who is shown to be an extremely shrewd and stern authority figure, and is depicted as probably the most accomplished duellist of the entire franchise who managed to almost kill the emperor in a one on one fight until he was backstabbed by Anakin.

This was treated in and out of universe as entirely natural and expected and nobody involved in the production made a big deal about it.

The sequel trilogy.....has finn. A literal janitor who quickly becomes doofy comic relief who accomplishes jack shit during his entire screen time beyond being a doofy silly distraction to various villains, is thrown around like a ragdoll by everyone around him, and is a walking punchline whose only defining feature winds up being his obsession with the white woman super-duper main character.

This character received wall to wall shrieking proclamations of his casting being the most progressive step forward in cinema history and for years it was endlessly regurgitated how stunningly bravely important and amazing this character was just for existing while being black, and how anyone who voiced the slightest concern about the quality of the movies was actually a disgusting subhuman racist monster who was just furious to see the first black man in star wars history....

....then the moment higher-ups became aware of how the chinese dont rike brack peopre, he was scrubbed from marketing and posters, his part in the last movie turned into a literal footnote, and everybody involved in the corporate constructed mass hype orgy spontaneously forgot all about him

You see what im getting at here?

I still can't see how Komi will work as an anime, will it go the Kaiji narration route or the Tatami Galaxy route of going fast as fuck with subtitles?
I just want to see the Jahy sama trailer.

So in terms of Record of Lodoss War, which is the better watch, the OVA or the TV series? I'm watching the OVA, but I feel like the OVA's been skipping through things. It just doesn't feel like a world that's uniquely its own, like outside of the opening prologue explaining the history of how Lodoss came to be, I don't see how it's any different from every other fantasy anime series of its time. Unless this is a case of "Seinfeld is unfunny" in that Lodoss set the standard for everything that came after it, but the OVA just feels rushed to me. Kinda bothers me tbh.

The best part of Made in Abyss is with all the child nudity and gore it gatekeeps itself.
Didn't really notice the nudity, it's such a good series. The gorey part of the sixth layer in the third movie was interesting and a natural part of the story.

For anyone interested it looks like Ishida (Tokyo Ghoul author) is working on a new series called CHOUJIN X with the first chapter up online in English. Read it myself and it's pretty cool, hoping it's the same quality of Tokyo Ghoul and not Re: since I ended up dropping that halfway. From reading some discussion on it the series looks like it releases when he feels like it rather than a set schedule and he isn't working with an editor for more creative freedom (he apparently had a lot of problems with his editor during Re: ) though from early discussion on it he mentioned he'd already pre-written out the story (Don't know if it's 100% true).

The manga is heavier on that aspect than the anime adaption.

It's always weird seeing OLM do something that isn't Pokemon these days. I'm still surprised they took on something like Odd Taxi, and are doing something like this.

To this day, I still cannot find it in me to stop hating Akamatsu's editors for forcing him to suddenly end Negima but props to Akamatsu for at least giving some closure on what happened to class 2-A and this ending page:

There's plenty you can criticize Akamatsu for, but in some ways he has some of the best craft skills in the business, besides being one of the few mangaka with an actual understanding of the business side of things.

?
They've been doing Beyblade and Yōkai Watch for ages and currently are working on the Zoids franchise.
Yes, but something like this is kind of left field in this day and age given their status as "Kiddie show" anime guys or "additional subcontractor".

>woke
>progressive

Those are synonyms in that climate for the same narcissistic bourgeois scum that dont want to suffer the consequences of being an autistic narcissist dipshit and making problems where there previously were none.

Ah, fair point. Then that means their last non-kiddie series they did before Odd Taxi was Gift: Eternal Rainbow back in 2006. Not counting the times they worked with Xebec on the Space Battleship Yamato OVAs and movie, but that must fall under "additional subcontractor".
