You are missing the point of why people hated 4Kids! It's because the horribly edited version was the only version. There was no uncut alternative. And for some of the shows that they licensed that is still true to this day. For example Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters has never had an fully uncut English DVD release. They did uncut (redubbed no less) DVDs for the first few episodes as a failed experiment, and now finally after decades you can watch (almost) the entire series in Japanese with subtitles on CrunchyRoll. But that is in spite of 4Kids! best efforts to keep people from ever watching the show uncut. Funimation had to do an edited version of Yu Yu Hakusho to get onto TV, but at least you could go buy the uncut version on DVD.

That's not to say Funimation is any better with this crap. Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh! are both total laughing stocks that aren't taken seriously even among anime fans who completely revere other Shonen Jump series. And it is for one obvious reason. They both had terrible English dubs with psychotically bad casting decisions (occasionally mixed with a few good ones) and script rewrites so drastic as to often be completely opposite the themes being expressed in the Japanese version (for example famously Goku's speech begging Kuririn not to kill Vegeta). For years these were the only ways available to legally watch those shows. Maybe Funimation later undid some of these rewrites in one of their many, many redubs. Who cares. Kai is shit!

Don't get me started on "abridged series" and other popular youtube parodies. I stopped liking them the moment I realized that all they actually do is make it less likely people will ever want to watch the original show. Because all they know are the stupid memes, so they'll watch 5 minutes of the original show and say "Hey, this isn't funny!" and turn it off.
You see this wouldn't have been a problem if you were an Escaflownechad in the late 90's.

The DVD releases were all released uncut while the show was running on FOX and the cut up FOX dub version never made it to home video. It's actually considered lost media because the whole series was reworked but they never aired it.

You had a choice and you choose anime that existed to sell cards and toys first and foremost.

I hope you're only referring to the original Yu-Gi-Oh! dub and not the miracle that was the GX dub that was sadly cut short from dubbing the last season. Just for Chazz alone the dub is good, but it's also helped that it reads like 4kids didn't even look at the scripts before approving them with how much self parody is in it. The series is a gold mine for "what this isn't an abridged, it's official?" in a similar vein to Ghost Stories or the often forgotten Duel Masters dub.

Ghost stories really does come off as abridged on a first impression. They really went overboard with the localization.

I watched the first two seasons of Free! and yeah it’s blatant fujoshi bait without actually being yaoi, like Black Butler.
The first season was fine. There were some interesting side characters. The only drama I saw on twitter and tumblr was people swooning over the flamboyant Grell and claiming that he was trans. The second season was really uncomfortable due to the little sadistic blonde asshole that was trying to seduce his demon butler.

It was passable, but the plot never did much for me and the fujo undertones were obvious (I think we all know about the corset scene). Grell is a whole other can of worms I avoided like the plague, which is a shame because he/she/they/it was the one character I genuinely liked. The only interesting part of season 2 was Hannah, and even then she was sexualized out the whazoo and used as bully bait. I gave up after season 3 because I couldn't stand Ciel anymore.

Never watched it outside season 1 but parts of the first season and all of second season were anime original, weren't they?
The third season was the first to be a straight manga adaption, its all a clusterfuck.

So, I remembered I posted on this thread that I wanted to collect the BLAME! Master Edition manga series in the near future, since at the time I thought they were still affordable. (Even while admittedly knowing that manga prices are not cheap.)

Well, I still thought that, until I saw this:

Granted, this is Amazon so I was on the fence as it is, but which one of you on KF did this? And why would you do this?

$1,000+ for a “collectible” manga omnibus that came out five years ago?

Amazon has gotten just as bad as eBay with scalpers. Trying to search for anything relatively old on Amazon has become a chore because half of them are obscure 3rd party scalpers or it's a dead page with no for sale listings, and that's only after you get past 5 promoted items at the top of the results that aren't what you're looking for.

Zombie Land Saga is four for four so far this season. Seems like it's a Lily episode next week.
Yeah, we can expect some fun online regardless of what happens in it.

It is weird though that I don't think of any other shows that were parodies about the idol genre, despite it being extremely prominent. Maybe the japanese are afraid that some nutjob will attack them over a percieved slight of his waifu.

Anyways, I want to say thank for Sony for allowing me to torrent Mugen Train after so long. Off to see it.

I want a Tae episode so they can put those rumors to rest
That she's actually been pretending to be retarded this whole time because she can't actually sing and doesn't want to be expelled from the group because this is the first time ever that she actually has friends. Supposedly she literally died form loneliness.

That would be pretty interesting. The biohazard signs surrounding her in the OP made me think something else, so I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I probably have bias, but to me I thought the Yu-Gi-Oh! Dub wasn't that bad. But as a collector of the OG DVDs, I can confirm it was a pain in the ass to get the un-cut ones. I think the only one I don't own was the first one, but I would have to double check my collection. Now the REAL pain in the ass was when it came to Seasons 3-5. Season 3 was half cannon half non-cannon, season 4 was all filler, and half of season 5 was filler.
I myself am unsure if I own all the DVD's for seasons 3-4 since I got them all 2nd hand from shopping around as a kid and 4kids is a cluster fuck, I however do not own any from season 5.
The way they handled the S3 DVDs if I remember right was they cut ALL the digital world shit out. So when you watched the DVD's it was just a sudden LEAP to Alcatraz island. The only way to watch all the Digital world shit was to buy the box sets that would come MUCH much later.
Season 4, last time I checked there were only 3 DVDs?. It had the dragons Timaius, Heremos, and Critias and that was it. No more after that as far as I know. If I counted right, you are left in the middle of the Joey vs Valon fight on the last dvd they made and I can assume it'll jump STRAIGHT to the KC grand prix if you were dvd only. The reason being season 4's dvd's were 9 episodes a piece. You still have 14 episodes with no clue wtf is going on from why 2 white boy are beating the shit outta eachother in an alleyway over a girl only to jump in s5 like nothing weird ever happened. Also last time I checked, years ago, the 3rd dvd for S4 was only released in Australia? But again I could be wrong since this is looking like a rabbit hole itself.
I cannot comment on anything from season 5 dvd wise sadly.
Also buying those DVD'S now is a bitch. As a kid who was trying to get her hands on all the singlets it was so fun, but now as an adult I have to wade through people reselling the newer DVD repackages. My favorite thing was the covers on all the dvd's and I'm shocked how much the prices went down from when I was a kid.

GOD GX WAS A RIDE IN DUB. Course there were a few weird moments in the sub I would need to do a rewatch for.
Scene's include:
- Syrus, Jaden, and Chumley taking a bath together and for some reason there is a bear and some other animal washing their backs
- I can't remember if the episode was cut but there was one where Hasselberry dueled the ra yellow dorm master because nobody ate lunch there anymore or something weird like that.
- Bastion turning into a nudist and running away from duel academy
- a ton more I cannot remember to save my life.

Dub wise the
- Hey Jaden uhhh if you got any grilled cheese in your lunch box i'll keep it safe for you
- the ENTIRE dark scorpions duel was a ride "I summon myself to the field!"
- Aster's nasally voice going "OOPS I FORGOT TO TURN OFF MY CELLPHONE" and Jaden about to beat his ass

5d's was great too. I still remember Yusei walking into a bar for a glass of milk.

If you have any way to obtain GX S2 in it's box set glory, please tell me. The only way to get it for some reason is in PAL region and after years of kicking it around I might have to bite the bullet and buy it since I cannot find the American one ANYWHERE for some reason.

Also to top off my Yu-Gi-Oh! spurging, interesting tidbit I did learn years ago, was that funimation DID try to make a dub of Zexal. I used to watch Little Kuriboh's livestreams as a kid and the VA for Yuma, who was a girl before we got Eli Jay (the voice of Yuma now), was there to answer some questions about it. TLDR: 4kids still was the copyright holder to ALL Yu-Gi-Oh! at the time so due to that and licensing issues, it fell through. I remember Shark was played by Vic Mignogna in the clip I saw, or it at least sounded like him. There might be a clip of it still on youtube but they did the whole Japanese names shit and it was pretty good But at the time of the livestream, we WERE going to get a funi-dub of Zexal before it got shelved.

Edit: changed who voiced Shark in the funi-zexal dub, and I found the clip that was floating around the internet.

Free! is directed by a literal fujoshit for other fujoshits but the show pretends it's not fujoshit-baiting when it's obvious all of that drama is meant to appeal to fujoshits. While I personally don't mind watching the series (c'mon, girls need their eye candy, and KyoAni has delivered), the Western fanbase is pretty insufferable when it comes to the series, so I just stay away from them. I have no idea how they've been going about it lately.
Free! is strange in that I'm always told it was controversial and anime fans have a problem with it for not being a straight anime, but I've never actually seen anyone who thinks that. Most people take a live and let live attitude to it.

I saw that happen in real time. I was reading through all the old Masamune Shirow stuff, I was part way through Appleseed, which was £10-£15 per volume new. Suddenly they're all gone from my local book shop, and amazon is asking £50+ for a used copy. This was pre-covid, so you can't even blame that.

I won't repeat my rant from the collectors market thread, but it'll suffice to say I don't get what these companies have to gain pandering to scalpers this way. Especially when Dark Horse (or whoever owns the rights now) could easily put those books on print-on-demand. I don't understand the logic.

I don't think it's a coincidence that, over the last 6 months or so, I've noticed a resurgence of piracy.

Considering the fact that I read the news about someone uploading a pirated copy of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, I honestly don’t think I’ve seen this amount of anime torrenting happening since the early 2000’s.

And to put in perspective, I took a break from watching anime for a few years, and even then it wasn’t as clear that anime fans are tired of corporations trying to make watching anime into a business and not a hobby.

I don't think anime fans mind that. I think it's more that corporations are turning anime into sanitised slop, or simply re-writing books/shows/games to fill them full of 8 year old normie memes and wokeshit.

Amazon tends to be the worse online retailer when it comes to buying manga. I used rightstuf back when I was buying a lot of manga and it was alright with prices, looking at their site while out of stock they seem to be selling the Blame manga for about $26-27, and I think I've seen it go lower in the past

Damn, now you're making me remember... The changes to Yu-Gi-Oh! going from manga to anime are arguably an even worse rewrite than 4Kids! changes going from Japanese to English (and man, that's saying something). Turns out starting your anime adaptation 8 volumes into the manga wasn't a great idea. It means you have to ass-pull new introductions for tons of characters who people are supposed to already know about by this point. Also, what a wonderful idea, inserting an over 20 episode filler story right in the middle of a tournament arc. Again, I think the worry was since the Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters anime skipped over Kaiba's backstory in the Death-T arc they needed to fill in some gaps otherwise Kaiba's entire motivation at the end of the tournament makes no sense. That's where starting the anime at volume 8 is coming back to bite you in the ass again. Goddamn morons!

Lot's of little world-building details make no sense in the anime too. Like why is Kaiba's duel disk seen as revolutionary, when those ridiculous gigantic duel arenas have been creating volumetric holograms since episode 1? In the manga, up until the duel disk showed up all duels were held inside a box with screens on all 4 walls and the "holograms" were just 3-D rear projection images on the screen behind the player.

Also, I cannot believe that anybody watches any of the Yu-Gi-Oh! spinoff anime (GX, 5D's, etc.). They're all garbage.
