I never could get past the first season of Free with the second half being a bunch of boring drama with shark (can't remember his name). Maybe later seasons fixed it. Personally, when it comes to Kyoani's gay sports, Tsurune has a better mix of drama and fun.

Think it's funny that I could sit through Hanebado and its insanely high levels of stupid drama that were almost soap opera tier, yet I tap out at Free.

It’s interesting watching Twitter get made at Nagatoro because they think the anime is based on the webcomic and not the manga. Coming across a lot of spite art.
There's a lot of edits of the original manga that have Nagatoro being explicitly racist that twitter retards think are real.

Typical “I will believe anything bad about this thing because I’m mad people like it” attitude.

If Nagatoro was a V-Tuber, the twitter simps would be throwing money at her by the fucking truckloads.

The one thing that's become pretty obvious is that she meets all the check marks for a diversity quota character, but they're all acting like Monseigneur Claude Frollo around the series. In a way it's life imitating art.

Nah, if anything it got worse. Season 2 introduced a new character to replace Rin as the source of drama and then season 3 introduced two new characters to act as the source of drama, complete with a scene where two college-aged guys argue loudly at night in a neighbourhood park about whether one of the guys is like the little mermaid while the background music is sad dubstep with violins. Actually that's the main problem with free! drama, that as the dudes get older and older it's more embarrassing that they're still hung up over shit that happened in middle/elementary school.

Free! is directed by a literal fujoshit for other fujoshits but the show pretends it's not fujoshit-baiting when it's obvious all of that drama is meant to appeal to fujoshits. While I personally don't mind watching the series (c'mon, girls need their eye candy, and KyoAni has delivered), the Western fanbase is pretty insufferable when it comes to the series, so I just stay away from them. I have no idea how they've been going about it lately.

This reminds me of how you've got people like this chick writing twitter thinkpieces on how illegal skateboard racing in sk8 is 'queer' and the whole thing is so embarrassing and pretentious.

They're calling it the Last Stroke because then you can die and be free from all the Fujoshits.

Looking at what's airing in the later seasons I can say that Fall is likely to have a lot of drama surrounding Requiem of the Rose King because of the main character Richard III is intersex from what little I read before dropping it out of confusion since I couldn't tell what was going on at times. I can already see certain parts of twitter losing their minds.

I hate people coming into fujo anime and trying to make them seem deeper than they actually are to try and justify their enjoyment of a show. I'm not saying all don't have deeper stuff going on, but the vast bulk aren't and are really just "hot/cute dudes doing random activities" in the same vein as cgdct shows.

Think it's just a testament to how desperate people on twitter are to appear smart by writing a bunch of pretentious drivel on how "x is actually super deep, let's unpack why 1/?" and try to imply that by disagree it's just you not getting it. Then those same people will miss incredibly clear messaging because it doesn't fit their agenda or disproves whatever big brain ideas they've imagined.
I only ever watched the parody series of Free! that Octopimp used to make, 50% Off.
Second best thing to come out of the series besides the meltdown on /a/ when it was officially announced.

It’s like Fujos are stuck in the early 2000’s mindset of “2deep4u” when most harem enthusiasts are at “big tittie go boing” now.

started to watch Initial D again for nostalgia. for a second i wondered if i misremembered watching it because of the eurobeat intro and the voices being different.

found out that Funimation redubed the whole thing and kicked tokyopop out to the curb. for all teh shit Funi gets, nothing is as bad as Tokyopop, who changed shit around for marketing and not some sjw cause. cos there's nothing more shit than takumi being called Tak for no reason other than "it sounded more american".

and this fucking awful intro

apparently, some tokyopop staffer used its anime license to prop his music making skills. the tokyopop dub is up there with the english Gundam movies dub.

Holy cow, the kids these days have it great with the voice work and translations.

I watched the first two seasons of Free! and yeah it’s blatant fujoshi bait without actually being yaoi, like Black Butler. Whenever it tries to be emotional/angsty it’s just laughable, but if you shut your brain off and ogle the eye candy it’s bearable enough I guess. Not surprised to hear it got even more melodramatic.

I actually watched the Tokyopop dub since the Tokyopop DVDs were at Half-Price and I went "What the hey". Turns out the DVDs allow you to customize audio tracks, so you can actually have the dub with the original music, or the sub with the dub music. Tested it out for myself, and it works, though I still chose to go with how Tokyopop intended it in all its cheesy, if retarded glory. But it was honestly really nice of them to do that and I wish more dubs had that option.

Also I honestly prefer Takumi's Tokyopop voice-actor to FUNimation's. He sounded much more natural to the character.

Replying to the translation censorship/rewrite discussion here so as not to clutter this thread with off topic stuff:

You are missing the point of why people hated 4Kids! It's because the horribly edited version was the only version. There was no uncut alternative. And for some of the shows that they licensed that is still true to this day. For example Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters has never had an fully uncut English DVD release. They did uncut (redubbed no less) DVDs for the first few episodes as a failed experiment, and now finally after decades you can watch (almost) the entire series in Japanese with subtitles on CrunchyRoll. But that is in spite of 4Kids! best efforts to keep people from ever watching the show uncut. Funimation had to do an edited version of Yu Yu Hakusho to get onto TV, but at least you could go buy the uncut version on DVD.

That's not to say Funimation is any better with this crap. Dragon Ball and Yu-Gi-Oh! are both total laughing stocks that aren't taken seriously even among anime fans who completely revere other Shonen Jump series. And it is for one obvious reason. They both had terrible English dubs with psychotically bad casting decisions (occasionally mixed with a few good ones) and script rewrites so drastic as to often be completely opposite the themes being expressed in the Japanese version (for example famously Goku's speech begging Kuririn not to kill Vegeta). For years these were the only ways available to legally watch those shows. Maybe Funimation later undid some of these rewrites in one of their many, many redubs. Who cares. Kai is shit!

Don't get me started on "abridged series" and other popular youtube parodies. I stopped liking them the moment I realized that all they actually do is make it less likely people will ever want to watch the original show. Because all they know are the stupid memes, so they'll watch 5 minutes of the original show and say "Hey, this isn't funny!" and turn it off.

I remember tokyopop more for being infamous with there manga releases, though It's been years since I've looked at one (and I've seen some people argure the GTO was decent because steve blum was onizuka)
Speaking of manga distributers, any of them been doing anything scummy recently?
I know Viz has done crap in the past but they probably won't die unless they lose first dibs on anything from shueisha and I know they have started listing who translated what on their simulcast(?) chapters so its easer to tell who's the lesser evil.
Kodansha I've heard nothing about, closest thing is years ago they announced years ago that if the next volume of Vinland Saga didn't sell enough they would drop it but I don't know if that was malicious or not.
Dark Horse I will always give shit for being terrible at printing covers and spines, although I have heard there berserk and hellsing deluxe editions are good, by god are they expensive.
