FINALLY FINISHED MOBILESUIT GUNDAM 0079.
HOOOOOOOLY shit that was good. The ending scene with Char I actually remembered from this late night anime death montage I went to at a convention so it was pretty cool seeing the context and all that go down. Also, I somehow found out Fraw and Hayato become a couple??? Bitch how since Hayato didn't do a damn thing really. I remember a few days ago I was like "Is Kai going to get better" and OHHH BOY HE DID. But god. Hayato. You didn't do a fucking thing really.

Honestly if I can find this shit on dvd i'm buying it cause lordy I feel like I could rewatch it over and over again. That was a fun few days of binging ngl. But I still got a laundry list of shit to watch like trying out Jujutsu Kaisen, and going back to BNHA S2, Naruto, and Haikyuu.

However, I'm on a hyperfixation and I am still unsure about where to go next.

So it is 0079, stardust, THEN Zeta. or is there something else between 0079 i'm not aware of? I tried to look for a list and it keeps listing origin first, THEN 0079, but a few kiwi's said maybe hold off on it? Also to add on the origins question, there's like two different origins I saw pop on on the site I use? Advent of the red comet, and then just gundam the origin, so yea what's the whole shebang bout that?

But yea if I can find out what to watch after 0079 that would be great since i'm assuming it's stardust then zeta and the other stuff like the war in a pocket and 08 team is if I want to see more of the OYW? But if anyone has like a preferred order I see everything in i'm open to hear it since all I know about Zeta is Kamille gets angry about his name and Char's here to laugh at everyone.

Sorry for the autistic commentary I am legit still trying to understand this franchise and i'm having a good time.

There's also War in the Pocket, but that's a standalone that doesn't really hit on any characters or themes from Zeta, but it is more depressing than the others. Also good.

Finally got around to watching the final episode of Wonder Egg Priority. The production has been a mess, not only was it delayed, its not even the actual final episode. They were behind so they replaced one of the originals with a recap. The actual final episode is coming out in June.

The final episode just added more questions than answers, adding shit about parallel universes into an already clusterfuck b science plot ft. Thanatos and artifical ai that came out way too late. It was pretty, but absolutely nothing other than that which sort of sucks, the visuals especially during the first episode were great.

the two origin series are basically the same, the only difference is Advent of the red comment is a re-edit of the OVAs for tv, so instead of 6 episodes about an hour each, it was changed to 13 episodes 25 mins each ( they do this for Unicorn too if you ever get that far.)
Not sure if there's anything else that's different since I've only seen the OVAs so can't say which is better.

As for what to watch next, its up to you. I will say going with the OYW spinoffs is a lot less of a commitment since all of them are standalone and all range from 8-13 episodes so you can easily watch other series at the same time. But if you have nothing else to watch at the moment go with Zeta (stay away from the movie trilogy though, unlike with the 0079 trilogy that can be argued to be a good substitute for first time watchers, the Zeta ones are not)
Also I might takeback what I said about Stardust because tbh, its the one thing in the OYW era I kinda dropped (and I somehow sat through all of IGLOO) I probably will get back to it one day and probably enjoy it, but I remember watching the first few episodes years ago and it seemed like a weaker Macross Plus. So someone else might want to chime in if its better to watch it before or after Zeta.

I was enjoying the show but didn't think it was anything too special before episode seven happened, and it was after that that I fell in love and strapped in for the ride. The fact people (anime fans especially) don't get what it was going for baffles me, which is why it's such an underappreciated show. Haven't seen Durarara, though, so I'll have to take your word for it.
Yeah, reading a bunch of the reviews just baffled me “they didn’t foreshadow this”, “I don’t understand why this is going on”, “they stopped being a parody and started being what they were parodying”. Like, yeah, that’s the whole point.

I only saw the first 26 episode Durara series, keep meaning to read the LN’s for the rest. The first couple episodes I really didn’t get what they were going for and I only came back to it years later after watching a parody AMV of a Fight Club trailer using Durara. It has some extremely high highs, but also some really dark spots and some really long periods of setup. I think it’s one of those series where if it‘s for you, you’ll eventually find it.

The third 0079 compilation movie is also absolutely worth watching too if you only saw the tv version of the finale.

I just finished it and yeah that sounds about right. It really needed a better writer, especially for the second half. The further it went on the more I disliked the mc, his love interest, and the main villain even though I really liked Gato initially. By the end they were insufferable petty idiots. The rest of the cast were (mostly) just sort of there and the overall story was hit and miss. Apparently the second half had a different guy in charge, it shows.

The animation and mobile suit designs are fucking incredible though, easily some of the best in the genre on both fronts from start to finish. I couldn't help but rewatch some of those battles when I was done, I was blown away by how good they were. If you want more UC it's worth slogging through the boring parts for Neue Ziel vs Dendrobium alone.

Depending how long it is, I might check it out tonight since I don't have a lot going on tonight tbh.

So what I'm understanding is I can just jump to Zeta if I want to but I should eventually get around to stardust and some of the other UC stuff if i'm into it?
I have a tolerance for "eh" parts like hell I JUST sat through 10 episodes of Orochimaru and Hiruzen in the exact same position and some of the most ungodly boring ninja war filler (I skip around in shippuden while i watch the first naruto series) but even I have a point where i'm like "alright I can't do this shit anymore".
It sounds like the best idea is to mix stardust and the other UC content before zeta in while I watch it incase I hit one of those "ugh" parts?

stardust and war in a pocket has some ugh moments too. i remember 8th ms team being fun when i first watched, but now i can barely get through an episode because it's the same hackneye mecha storyline.

anyone old enough to have to get anime from a shitty vhs bootlegger? my first bootleg was char's counterattack in a japanese anime store called "gift shop" in the 90s. it came in a white plastic shell with cover art, had english subtitles and fuzzy warping video. a little after chan is killed by hathaway it would cut into stardust memories where burning dies.

the most notable thing thing about "gift shop" is that it would sell gunpla kits that someone started building. I remember trying to buy an HG Shining Gundam kit, giving the cashier money and he blurts "wait, wait" and then opens the box to reveal the torso and and arm had been completed. ended up getting an f71 g-cannon kit from gundam f91 and an 8th ms team wall scroll.

The anime club I went to lent out VHS fansub videotapes for you to dub at home (I had two VCRs although one of them was only mono) but I did once buy a VHS bootleg of the Sailor Moon Super S movie from a store in Montreal Chinatown when I had just started to buy anime soundtrack CD's. The bootleg Taiwanese CDs were pretty indistinguishable from legitimate CDs other than the company name but the quality of the bootleg anime on VHS was as atrocious as watching a 10th generation fansub so I never made the mistake of buying another anime VHS tape from Chinatown.

Is Wonder Egg Priority any good? I've heard very polarizing things about it and I'm wondering if it's a worthwhile watch when I decide to watch it some time soon.

I also finally got around to watching Macross Plus and now I'm interested in the series. Is there any that are recommended or should I just go in series order?

Oh yeah, I started watching Space Dandy and it's fun as hell, also the ending theme is amazing. I haven't skipped the ending yet!

I jumped into Zeta just because tonight I don't have focus for a 2 hour movie, and damn is Kamille.. interesting. Not in a bad way but damn this kid is down to fight everything and everyone and took his mom dying like a champ after crying for 5 minutes. Is he like a psychopath or some shit? He just has that (: look all the damn time but it's interesting not gonna lie. His whole fly off the handle energy is enduring.

Also with all my Char obsessing this past week I am very surprised I never noticed that scar on his face from where Amuro stabbed him in the face. I love small details like that tbh.
Voice wise, I didn't know it wasn't Michael Kopsa doing the voice, but Tom Edwards is pretty indistinguishable at least to me.

Also apparently there was a missing episode from 0079 I never saw? Something about it before #15?

Dropped it when they began with the troon shit. Fuck that.

Just got done with Kaifuku Jutsushi no Yarinaoshi, and I hope for a second season

i stopped buying them when i got a korean dubbed armitage iii in a case for macross ii from the local korean store. no subs. after that, i saved money for american releases. now i jist dl them and buy the dvd/blurays of the ones i like. but getting a anime for 5 was great.

there was a guy who ran a geocities Dragonball Z site whod screengrab his fansub bootlegs. goofy subs aside, it was the only way to "watch" dbz because it wasnt airing on a national network.

I also finally got around to watching Macross Plus and now I'm interested in the series. Is there any that are recommended or should I just go in series order?

macross ii is worth a watch. like plus, i prefer the movie version. 7, frontier, do you remember love are whatever, you get the missile barages and the songs and thats all i remember.

Kamille is a moody teen full of rage, being insane is his character for the longest of times. Then he starts dropping the sickest death threats.

The missing episode is the one with mobile suits martial arts, it's great.

It was alright, but they do all this build up just to smack a reset button fucking hard. It's ultimately unsatisfying.
I really liked Durarara but I do not like how the ending felt a bit too short for a series that has a ton of characters, like the ending for it would’ve benefited by having more

Space Dandy is great. It remains a goddamn travesty that Toonami aired background music from the show instead of the actual OP/ED. They only aired the proper OP/ED once during the 2018 April Fool's prank because the entire episode was in Japanese.

Wait are you serious? I can't imagine watching this show without it's excellent OP/ED.

Series order. SDF First, then Do You Remember Love, which is an in universe retelling of the first series. What it really was is that the look of DYRL is what Kawamori wanted, but couldn't afford to animate in the first series, so the universe bases its look off of DYRL going forward, but the events of the first series are what happened canonically. You've seen Plus, so after that is Macross 7, which is...special in its own way. It's a bit rough early but it gets better and has some moments of pure badass insanity. Make sure to watch the extra episodes and OVAs. Zero and Frontier have some of the best CGI work in anime, especially for their time period and Sheryl's up there for Best Idol. The Frontier movies are fun and have some high points, but I much prefer the series. The ending is especially annoying and silly at the same time, but it's worth it for Pink Monsoon alone. Delta has pacing issues, but it's not bad.

Macross II is a non-canon, alternate universe thing, Kawamori was not involved in its creation and it has no bearing on the proper series. It does get included in fan events though and its "idol" was included in the fan thing they did in 2019 which had all the Macross Idols, but wasn't filmed because Japan. It's not a bad little series though.

The thing to keep in mind is that every Macross has it's own feel to it and they can be very different from each other. It's not like UC Gundam and its over arching theme of "War Sucks, everyone dies." The Macross universe could be a very dark place, and sometimes bits of that poke through the series, but at its core, Macross is about overcoming that and reaching for the stars.

I really liked Durarara but I do not like how the ending felt a bit too short for a series that has a ton of characters, like the ending for it would’ve benefited by having more
It did feel short. The hard reset for a specific character was annoying since so much of the series was about that particular situation. I will always love it for "Russian Sushi" though.
