IIRC the truck thing was popularized with some early 80s family friendly magical girl anime called Minky Momo. Same guy who wrote the Pokemon anime decided to end the series by having the main character get hit by a truck. No warning either, it was an episodic cutesy show families sat down to watch every week and then BAM. It's like if they ended Pokemon by having Ash check for mew under the truck but then it rolls over his neck.
yeah as far as I know Momo innovated "loltruck"
but bigger than that

There’s so much anime out there, we’re constantly celebrating anime anniversaries! But if you’re looking for big special reasons to celebrate, there are some major ones coming in 2021. Sounds like a good excuse for a movie marathon (or a first watch) to us!

Here are five anime for whom 2021 is a major landmark year, from a 10th anniversary to a 50th!

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: 10th Anniversary

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Has it really been ten years since Gen Urobuchi unleashed his tale of magical girl entropy on the world? This first of our anime anniversaries hardly seems real, since Puella Magi Madoka Magica hasn’t gone far in the intervening years. But it’s true. Movies and Magia Record aside, this series is a full decade old as of January 7.

Anniversary festivities are underway for the show, so look forward to new surprises throughout the year!

Spirited Away: 20th Anniversary

Spirited Away

Of all the anime anniversaries on this list, Spirited Away is probably the only one that coincided with the anime in question getting surpassed in its own Guinness record! Nonetheless, this Studio Ghibli classic is still the first anime ever to win an Academy Award, and continues to reign as one of the greats.

Celebrate this year on the day of its premiere, July 20.

Otaku no Video: 30th Anniversary

Otaku no Video

Gainax’s two-part mockumentary about life, love, and otakudom came out back in 1991. The OVA has gone on to become a much-loved anime, offering a tongue-in-cheek perspective on both otaku life and the beginnings of an anime studio.

Relive the magic by celebrating two anime anniversaries in one — on September 27 for Otaku no Video 1982, and December 20 for More Otaku no Video 1985.

Adieu Galaxy Express 999: 40th Annviersary

Adieu Galaxy Express 999

Leiji Matsumoto’s Galaxy Express 999 was a thoughtful and action-packed tale of humanity and coming of age. But when the series ended, the story wasn’t over. 1981’s Adieu Galaxy Express 999 continues the story after the fallout of the TV series. Tetsuro Hoshino is a teenage freedom fighter, and must board the space train to begin a new adventure.

The film officially hits the big 4-0 on August 1. If you’ve never seen the original series or the 1979 film that came before Adieu, you’ll have plenty to keep you busy.

Lupin the 3rd Part I: 50th Anniversary

Lupin the 3rd Part I

Wrapping up our list of anime anniversaries is the master thief himself. Four years after Monkey Punch’s manga debuted, the grandson of Arsène Lupin made the jump to anime. “Part I,” a.k.a. the Green Jacket series, premiered on October 24. It ran for 23 episodes, and it would be four more years until he would get the red-jacketed Part II.

Fortunately, there’s so much Lupin out there, you’ll have no trouble finding as much as you want to watch.

What anime anniversaries are you looking forward to this year?

————————————————————————————

Proud to say with the exception of 999 and Lupin (both great anime(s), obviously), I’ve seen and read almost every anime on here.

sadly my raw ld of part two got a crack somewhere along the journey
;_;7
it was even a first pressing with the mail-in for the cd single of the ending

also Adieu really isn't so hot
it's not as bad as, say, that Kimagure Orange Road sequel where they finally boink, but it's less-needed than 999 Eternal Fantasy was and it's not like EF did much

and I was like "it's only been 10 years since Madoka?"

I guess they overlooked that 2021 is also the 40th anniversary of the debut of the Urusei Yatsura TV series, the first animated adaption of any Rumiko Takahashi manga and Mamoru Oshii's debut as a series director (rather than episode director).

I don't know if anyone is still interested, but Sunrise just dropped a new trailer for Hathaway's Flash:
CGI on the suits look pretty rough, though that might get fixed up closer to release, and also no sign of the central Gundam either. Anyone wanting to watch it just a fair warning that you'll need to have watched 0079, Zeta, and CCA for it to make sense (ZZ is optional). No idea what they'll change up from the novel but I'm not expecting a happy story or ending just going by what I've heard.

You've reminded me that I still have to get around to finishing up the first season of Shinkalion, what I watched was a lot of fun. Series also had some pretty crazy crossovers with stuff like Miku and Eva trains.

Man I remember watching that while it aired, stuff like this always reminds me how long I've been into anime.

List is also missing that it's the 30th anniversary of Gundam F91 come March and I'm still holding out hope Sunrise might announce something for it or maybe even something to cover some of the weird shit that happens late UC. It's a real shame what was going to be a 50 episode series got cut down to just a movie and even more a shame that such great mobile suit designs don't get much love. I'll probably get around to watching the movie soon, been trying to watch in chronological order, but I think sneaking in F91 won't hurt given how far it is in the timeline. At the moment, what I know of the series is based on playing Gundam Musou 3 and having to rush over to Seabook every time he spawned on my team because "Ahh, not the Bugs! Save me!" always triggered.

Good point. I didn’t know Mamoru Oshii was a series director for this, though. I was actually watching this a couple of days ago.

It would be pretty funny if the same studio that did Uzaki chan decided to do this anime, while airing this on April Fool’s Day. But here I go again, expecting way too much.

Also 30 years old this year, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, the first Gundam production I ever saw (at a comic book convention in Montreal in August 1994). It probably wasn't the best OVA for a total Gundam newbie due to how it expects you to understand the extensive references to the One Year War but it was well-animated and had great music.

To be honest, I was expecting Nagatoro to look a little darker but I suppose that's a realistic Japanese tan.

You can tell just from Nagatoro's toothy, smug grin at the end that this is based on a manga drawn by a hentai artist.

The change in animation didn't really bother me that much in OPM. What did bother me is that Saitama is only in like half the episodes.

Without that bald asshole coming in and tramping on all the tropes and cliches, One-Punch Man is a fairly bland and generic shonen anime.

Not only CCA, but you gotta read Beltorchika's Children because it's a sequel to that version of the story apparently, At least the book was I suppose they could change that for the movie. It's good though, better even, I highly recommend the manga adaption, it's more fleshed out and Hathaway doesn't flip out and kill his own comrade at the end. My only complaints were the removal of those neo Zeon soldiers helping Amuro at the end and that Nightingale isn't as cool as Sazabi. Not bad though.

And yeah the cgi can't really compare to the 2D art they made for it back then

Me-02r.jpg

I love this thing. It's perfect continuation of the mechanical aesthetic of the Zeon mobile suits in CCA. They got the design right in cg but imagine if they adapted Hathaway back then with a CCA level budget and traditionally animated mobile suits.

As for F91 it's amazing for the half hour or so, maybe the best depiction of a colony attack in the series, and from then on it becomes more and more noticeable that you're watching a recap movie for a series that doesn't exist. I'm not sure everyone involved agreed on what the story was supposed to be either, it gets more erratic as it goes on, especially the writing for the villains. The battles are amazing though, some of the best 2D mecha animation ever made is in parts of this movie, and you can at least get an idea of what the series could have been even with all the obvious gaps. There's a number of moments that will make you go "oh I could see this being a full plotline in a 50 episode series". If you're curious and want to see more of late UC it's definitely worth watching, just keep in mind: it's basically a recap movie with no source material, and it was meant to have a sequel. Also the mobile suits are all smaller now took some getting used to.

Be ready for a drop in animation quality when going to season 2, sadly.
That final fight was pretty cool though.

Speaking of OPM though, the latest chapter was pretty cool. Most of the S-Rank Heroes working together to combo the shit out Psykos was amazing since they never work together like that even if this arc is getting a little drawn out. I'm very intrigued by the gargantuan manshaped creature in the Earth since it wasn't in the webcomic so I'm not sure what it can be. But I am getting so tired of the redraws. If this man redraws another chapter instead of putting out new shit, I'm gonna have to fly to Japan to one slap some chaps.

I really like OPM, but it seriously suffers from a lack of direction and scope creep. IMO, it should've focused more on Saitama and his quest for happiness; or at least made more of an attempt to keep him more central to the events. As it is now, I have little faith that it'll finish in a timely manner because there's just so many side-plots that need to be explored; I stopped following the manga around the time Black Sperm appeared, and I thought he would've at least finished the Garou arc by this point.

I haven’t read the original webcomic, but I believe the manga is right on the cusp of the final battle with Garou.

I've heard similar surrounding how F91 feels like a recap movie for a show that doesn't exist, one of the reasons I'm still holding out hope they'll do something for its anniversary.

I'm honestly hoping that Sunrise gets more into exploring late UC because I'm getting a bit tired of the Feds versus whatever Neo Zeon remnant. They keep making mentions to the "dark times" of late UC with the Newtype hunts, cannibalism, and everything leading up to Turn A that all sounds interesting. I'd just love for it to get weird, still waiting for that Crossbone anime.

As for everything shrinking in size as the timeline continues it always made sense to me since tech shrinking as it evolves is a pretty common thing even nowadays. What I do find a real pain is that the model kits for all those late UC suits are always a pain to put together with how small they are at 1/144 scale, that's if they even got a kit at all.

I think they've gotten too focused on world building and giving other characters their time to shine that it's turning into actual shonen manga instead of the parody it started as. The webcomic is becoming guilty of this too and trying to tie in characters and plot points that are from the manga to keep things coherent between the two doesn't help but since the chapters are more condensed it gets to the point quicker and we get more Saitama shenanigans that still get laughs out of me.

I haven’t read the original webcomic, but I believe the manga is right on the cusp of the final battle with Garou.
You should read the webcomic sometime, looks like shit, but it's got heart. Plus it always fun to compare the differences because right now, the stuff currently happening in Murata's version did not happen in ONE's webcomic, so I am curious about how they intend to transition to Garou this time
