You have to get through the first season to really get the full effect and see why people praise the series so much. I still had the feels during the first season, personally, but I understand it's a rough time getting through for first-timers (even long-time fans). Fuko's route being the first arc in the anime
probably wasn't the best choice to start off the adaptation, but in context of the visual novel (and you'll see it later on throughout the season), it's the catalyst for cute Easter eggs that pop up in some routes after getting her happy end. KyoAni incorporating that I think just shows how much they loved the source material. Kotomi's route happens after Fuko, and it's better. It gets better.
CLANNAD -After Story- rewards the viewer for putting up with the rather harsh ups-and-downs in the roller coaster of life, but you have to get a good understanding of who the characters are to get to the
real meat of the series. As a testament of how unique the series is, my mother, a non-anime watcher who really despises the idea of anime and has rather shitty taste in media to begin with, watched the series--twice. Her rewatch was a request. Even my grandparents watched it, with Grandma saying she saw herself most in Nagisa (which is strange since she has more of a Tomoyo personality).
TL;DR:
